To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELLEN JANE DUROSS DESLOGE, a citizen of the United States, residing at No. 5859 Romaine Place, in the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Devices for Turning Nipples, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such. as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to devices that are used for turning rubber nipples such as are used on nursing bottles.
One object of my invention is to provide a device of the character described which is so constructed that the nipple will not be damaged, stretched or torn during the operation of turning same.
Another object is to provide a nippleturning device that can be kept clean easily and which can be manufactured at a small cost. And still another object is to provide a nipple-turning device which is so designed that the operator can use both hands in the operation of turning the nipple.
Other objects and desirable features of my invention will be hereinafter pointed out.
Figure 1 of the drawings is an elevational view of a nipple-turningdevice constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 illustrates one type of rubber nursing nipple that can be turned on my device; Fig. 3 illustrates the lower edge portion of the nipple turned over preparatory to applying it to the turning device; Fig. 4 illustrates how the nipple is applied to the device; and Fig. 5 illustrates the nipple after it has been turned on the device.
Referring to the drawings which illustrate the preferred form of my invention, 1 designates a standard which is provided at its upper end with a head 2 and at its lower end with a base 3. The base 3 is preferably circular and of great enough diameter to prevent the standard from tipping over easily, and, if desired, the lower portion of the standard can be flared or made substantially cone-shaped so that it merges into the base. The head 2 on the upper end of the standard 1 is so designed that it will not stretch or tear the nipple, and in the preferred form of my invention as herein shown, the head 2 is substantially bulbshaped and merges into the standard 1.
To turn a rubber nursing nipple of the type shown in Fig. 2, the operator first turns over the lower edge portion of the nipple in the manner shown in Fig. 3, and then grasps said turned edge portion. with the thumb and one finger of each hand and arranges the nipple in an inverted position on the head 2 of the device, as shown in Fig. 4. The final step of the turning operation is to move the hands downwardly longitudinally of the standard 1, the head 2 on said standard bearing against the tip of the nipple and thus causing the nipple to be turned inside-out, as shown in Fig. 5.
One of the most desirable features of this device is that it does not tear, stretch or mar the nipple as the head 2 of the device conforms approximately to the tip of the nipple and the operator can accurately gage the strain on the lower edge portion of the nipple because this portion of the nipple is held by the thumbs and fingers of both hands. There is nothing on the device which tends to enlarge the opening in the tip of the nipple through which the milk flows when the nipple is in use, and as the device is designed in such a manner that it stands firmly in an upright position the operator can use both hands to turn the nipple and consequently can perform the operation quickly.
Another desirable feature of the device is that it can be kept clean easily because there are no joints, cracks or separable parts in which dirt and germs can collect. And still manufacture, the entire device being preferably formed in one piece from any suitable kind of material.-
