SINGEING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented. Oct. 13, 1914.
Application filed April 4, 1914.. Serial No. 829,570.
' fication.
This invention relates to devices for producing a flame suitable-for singeing the hair either of man Or beast and my object is to devise a singer which is cheap, cleanly, effective and easily controlled.
l attain my object by securing to a suitable handle an elongated metal pocket having an opening along one side and filled with a suitable non-combustible absorbent material. The opening is preferably adjustable in width to control the flame and one edge is preferably serrated to spread the flame and to serve as a comb to raise the hair to be singed;
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the de vice, and Fig. 2 a side elevation of the same with the pocket in section, and Fig. 3 a similar view of a modification.
In the drawings like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures of the drawings.
1 is a handle preferably of wood to which is connected the wire fork 2. Secured to this wire fork by its ends is a pocket 3 formed of comparatively thin sheet metal. This pocket has an opening along one side and is filled with asbestos mineral wool or other suitable absorbent materials preferably non-combustible. One edge of the opening is preferably provided with a comb 4: the teeth of which serve to distribute and equalize the flame. It is also adapted to be used in combing out the hair to be singed. It is preferable that the opening in the pocket be adjustable in width so as to provide means for regulating the flame. This may be done in various ways. I show for the purpose a set screw 5 passing through the metal at one side of the pocket and screwed into the metal at the other side. To provide a sufficiency of metal for engagement with the set screw and to provide means for distributing the effect of the set screw from end to end of the slot, 1 preferably strengthen the pocket at each side of the opening with a metal strip 6. These strips are drawn together by means of the screw and thus contract the opening. The metal springs and tends to expand the opening as the screw is turned in the reverse direction. Alcohol or other readily vaporizable fluid is used in the device. A clean easily controllable fiame is thus obtainable well adapted for horse singeing purposes.
It will be understood of course that if the apparatus is to be used in singeing the human hair that the size will be reduced.
In Fig. 3 I show the device provided with a reservoir handle 7 which may be filled with spirits and the flow to the pocket controlled by a cock 8.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. As a singer the combination of a handle; an elongated sheet metal pocket secured thereto having an opening along its forward side; and a filling of absorbent material in said pocket.
2. As a singer the combination of a handle; an elongated metal pocket secured thereto having an opening along one side; means for adjusting the width of said opening; and a filling of absorbent materialin said pocket. I
3. As a singer the combination of a handle; an elongated metal pocket secured thereto having an opening along one side, one edge of the opening being formed as a comb; and a filling of absorbent material,
in said pocket.
4. As a singer the combination of a handle; an elongated metal pocket secured thereto having an opening along one side; one edge of the opening being formed as a comb; means for adjusting the width of said opening; and a filling of absorbent material in said pocket.
