Specication of Letters Tl?atent.` f
`Application filed November 27, 1911. Serial No. 662,705. 4 l v f To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Louis SELLIER, a'citizen of the Republic of France, and lresident of Paris, France, have invented new and .useful Improvements 4in, Compound Metalwhich improvements are fully set forth in thefollowing specification.
f The present 'inventionv has reference tov compound metal-workingimplements, and it' proposes an improved apparatus of the genj-k eral character" indicated, wherein are coin-v bined an anvil, aforge and means ,for supplying a forced blast of ai!` thereto, andv various devices for use inadjusting and actuf ating the several parts specified and for holding and operating upon the work. It further proposes the construction of certain of the parts and devices afore-mentioned, and their adjuncts, in such a manner as to permit their ready attachment to and detachment from the frame or body of the apparatus, according to the use to which the latter is 'to be put, and to the particular character of the work. y An embodimentof the invention is illustrated 'in t the accompanying drawing wherein:
with which said Figure 1 is aside elevation of the improved implement complete; Fig. 2 is a detail view vof one of the operating cranks; Fig. 3 is a detailview of oneof the shafts t crank is adaptedto be used; Fig. t is a detail view partly in y.dotted lines, of the mandrel which the aforesaid `shaft servesto operate; Fig. 5 is a longitudinal vertical sectional vview of the implement complete; Fig. l6 is anv end elevation` of the anvil; Fig. 7 is a detail view of ya. grind stone which may be mounted uponthe shaft shown in Fig. 4c -in` place of the mandrel; and Fig. 8 is a transverse vertical section y taken onthe line X-Y of Fig. 5, showing the anvil in place. i
The implement'represented in said drawing consists primarily of two main parts or elements, viz: A hollow fixed frame or body A which is adaptedto be rigidly secured to a suitable base by means of theaperturedv bosses to, and a movable body B. The element has substantially the form` -ofahol- 10W tute' and ig'siidabie einen@ horizontniy Patentedcnhlfllfl.f1 C i through alining openings inthe fixed body A, its movements being eectedjthrough" the gency ofl a feed screw'K.
Themovable bodyB terminates atits ends in blocks Fand` F, the former of which is provided with areduced opening or duct-"e that constitutes (the joutlet from thev air ychamberin the interior of saidloody,y and it 'is' further provided ywith a .pair of bearing openings wherein are respectively journaled the adjacent ends of the' afore'sa'id feed screw K andthe shaftv Q of the helicalfan or blower, the lower bearing openinghaving its outer portionenlarged to accommodate a iixedzfcross-pin Von the end ofthe aforesaidy shaft. l The: screw K isfprovidedwith l; a .washer t' which abuts a-gainstlthe projec'ting upper portionof block E, and its teroperating crank Lv by means` ofk which itis minajl has detachably connected theretoth'e rotated, to effect the'movements `of body B. ,lv
The sides, of said body kare formed at dianietrically-opposite points lwith longitudinal seats which receive a pair of-longitudinal guide rods 7: arranged withinthe interior of the fixed body At and adjustable by means of screws o as'lshownin Fig. 8. Said rods 7c serve to center body B and hold the same against turning; they lare adjustable` in order to take up wear, and to permit their accurate positioning' Bieden, at the opposa@ emiofbody nis" vformed with a series of four v"superposed yhorizontal bearing y"openings, as depicted in Fig. 5, the lowermostopening receiving the adjacent end yof shaft Q. In the two upper openings are journaled apair yof hollow` y 90` shafts I and R, the former ofwhichis rep-y resented vindetail in Fig; Thisq shaft is.
open atboth ends and is adapted to receive at'its innerfend the reducedconical stem?? yof mandrel O, (see Fig. 4),( said inner .kend
being'ftaperedv to correspond therewith', as
indicated by the reference character g. At
its opposite endit is formedwit-h a pair ofy short'slots or cuts sin 4which fitthe ends of w across-pin `r aiiiXed tothe stem u .of crank -The outer end` of shafty R isv also out` orslotted, sothathandle G can be applied `to either shaft `to drive the' same directly.
Shaftl I carries a gear t which meshes with a larger gear R1 on shaft R, the latter gear meshing also, with the smaller member of a compound gear S carried by a horizontal stub-shaft or pin S1 that is journaled in the third of the bearing openings in blo-ck F. The other member of gear S is larger' than the first-mentioned member, and meshes with a small gear T, fast on the fan shaft `@fthe arrangement being such, therefore, asv to effect the rotation of the latter shaft at the requisite speed, the air being drawn into the front end of the air chamber in body B through an inlet e2.
The fixed body A carries a jaw H upon its inner end, which confronts a similar jaw H1 provided upon block F, the portion of body A whereon jaw H is formed serving to support the anvil C, (Fig. 5), which` fits ina seat provided in body A and is centered'and locked infplace bymeans of a projecting lug c and a sliding boltv J.
Lug c is'designed to fit in a recess f, provided'in the rear face of jaw H, while bolt J is designed for removable engagement in a recess j in anvil C, said bolt projecting througha slot Z inbodyA and having its stem encircled by a controlling spring g.
Tith the aboveedescribed anvil, there is provided a forge D, (Fig. 1), which is designed for detachable connection to block E through the agency of a yoke adapted for engagement in a retaining seat a formed on the upper end of said block. Said forge is furnished with an air inlet or duct d, which, when the forge is attached to block E, registers with the duct e in the latter', so that the air forced by the fan through duct e will pass directly into and through duct ,-andthence under the hearth of the forge, the said duct Z communicating with vthe hearth, as shown. v
From the foregoing, it will be understood that the movable body B may be adjusted relative to the fixed body A to clamp the work between the jaws H and H1,by rotating crank L in the proper direction, after which crank G may be applied to either of shafts I and R, and'then rotated, to effect the operation of the jaw; or the fan may be driven prior to the adjustment ofthe jaws so as to heat the' work before being clamped by said ,jaws Also.l bothor'either ofthe soles C and D may be applied or detached, according to the character of the operations to be carried out.
` In addition to the instrumentalities alf ready described, the implementl embodies a tube clamp, (shown in Fig. l), a palte P for co-action with mandrel O, (Fig. 5), and a grindstone U, (Fig. 7 The first mentioned device comprises a pair of coacting jaws M and N of conventional design, whose reduced shanks are removably tted in sockets m and a, formed in the adjacent faces of the anvil jaws H1 and H. Above the socket n, and opposite shaft l, there is formed in the face of H a Second socket which receives the shank of plate P. The grindstone U is mounted on or afiXed to a short, hollow stub-shaft V1, which is adapted to be fitted upon the rear end ofthe fan shaft Q, said stub-shaft being slotted or cut at its lfree end to receive the ends of the cross-pin V. Rotation of shaft Q, through the agency of crank G, `will then serve to rotate the grindstone, but it is to be understood that crank L is detached from screw K prior to the attachment of the grindstone to shaft Q. The anvil C may, if desired,be proded with a hole or socket'x, (Figs. l, 5 and 6), to receive and support a removable chisel or other tool, not shown.
