DISK-GRINDING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 760,889, dated. May 24,1904.

To all whom it 'may concern.-
. Be it known that I, CHARLES A. MAcHI a citizen of the United States, residing at Dorrance, in the county of Russell and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Disk Grinding Machines; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it production.
With this and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is top plan view of my improved disk-grinder.
Fig. 2 is a front side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional View taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view takenon the line 4 4 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings by numeral, 1 denotes the frame of the machine, which is preferably made of angle-iron and is of open rectangular form, as shown. J ournaled in suitable bearings in said frame is a longitudinally-disposed drive-shaft 2, having at its outer end a band-pulley 3 and at its inner end a beveled pinion 4, which meshes with a beveled gear 5, secured upon a transversely-disposed shaft 6, mounted in suitable bearings in the frame 1. Said shaft 6 has secured to it a pinion 7, which is in mesh with a gear 8, secured upon a transversely-disposed shaft 9, mounted in bearings 10 upon the top of the frame 1. The front end of said shaft, which projects beyond the front side of the frame, is provided with a clamping device 11', which is adapted to hold the disk to be ground upon said shaft in order to rotate it. The end of said shaft is screw-threaded, .as at 15, to receive. a nut 16, which clamps said movable plate against the disk. Y Adjustably mounted upon the top of the frame 1 at its front side is a tool-support 18, having alongitudinal slot 19. A pivot (shown in Fig. 1) is employed to'thus adjust-ably mount 20 denotes a tool which is pivotally and slidably mounted upon said support by a bolt 21, extending through said slot 19 and the tool 20. Said tool is a tong-like device consisting of two members or levers 22 and 23, which are pivoted together intermediate their ends by a bolt 24. The member 22 has its short arm formed with a slot or socket 25, in which a stick or block of abrasive material 26 is secured by a set-screw 27, and the long arm of said member 22 forms a handle 28. Upon the short arm of the member 23 is journaled a spherical roller 29, which is disposed opposite the abrasive material 26, and the long arm of the member 23 forms a handle-30. The roller 29 is adapted to engage one face of the disk to be ground or sharpened and the abrasive material the opposite face, so that when the handles 28 and 30 are moved toward each other the edge of the disk will be clamped between the roller and abrasive material.
The operation of my invention is as follows: The disk to be ground or sharpened is secured concentrically upon the shaft 9 by means of the clamp 11, and power is then applied to the machine by means of a drive-belt which is passed about the pulley 3. The motion of the shaft 2 will be imparted to the shaft 9 through the gearing previously described, and the disk to be ground will thus be slowly rotated. The tool-support 18 and tool 20 are then adjusted so the roller 29 engages one face of the disk and the abrasive material 26 engages its opposite face, which is to be ground. By operating the handles 28 and 30 the disk may be ground or sharpened, as desired. The handles 28 and 30 form levers by means of which the tool may be turned to any desired position, and the pivot 24 of the tool being slidable longitudinally in the slot of the toolsupport and the latter being pivotally mounted at 21 the said tool-support is rendered adjustable simultaneously with the too], so that a single pressure of the handles in either direction will serve to turn both the tool and the tool-support in the required direction to engage the tool appropriately with the edge of the disk.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the prin ciple or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A disk-grinding machine comprising a supporting-frame, means to support and rotate a disk, a tool-support pivotally mounted on the frame and having a longitudinal slot, a tool having a pivot engaging and slidable in the longitudinal slot of the tool-support, and having a handle forming a lever for simultaneously moving the tool-support and the tool to adjust them as required, substantially as described.
2. A disk-grinding machine having a pivoted tool-support provided with a longitudinal slot, and a tool comprising a pair of pivot members, each having a handle-lever, one having a bearing device to engage one side of the disk and the other having an abrasive to engage the opposite side of the disk, the said tool having its pivot which connects the pivot members engaged and slidable in the longitudinal slot of the tool-support, the handles of the tool forming levers which serve to simultaneously turn and adjust the tool with reference to the tool-support and to also turn the latter on its pivot as required, substantially as described.
