JOHN H. GHAPPEL, on NEW YORK, N. Y., AssrGNoa To HIMsELm-Ronn'r sEAMAN,
.. ou satin PLACE, AND HENRY W. SHEPARD, on MANNsvrLLE, NEW YORK.
Letters Patent No. 111,317, dated January 31, 18(1.
IMPROVEMENT IN CULINARY VESSELS.
The Schedule referred t'o in these Letters Patent andmaklng part of the same.
To all whom, 'tt muy concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. CHAPPEL, of New York, iu the count-y ofNew` York andState of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Culinary Vessels; and I do hereby declare that the following is a" full, clear, and exact descripf 'tion oi' the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making part of this specification, in Which- Figure 1 is a top view of the vessel with the colander-disk plate secured.v l
Figure `2 is a vertical sectional View of the vessel with the colander-disk plate secured.
Figure 3 is a bottom view ot the vessel with the strainer-plate or disk attached.
Figure 4 is the disk-plate for the sitter, detached.
`The object ot' rriyinrentiou is to furnish a vessel lfor kitchen and other household purposes, .so constincted that, sim-ply by removingr one ot' a series of bottoms and inserting another, the entire character ot' the vessel is changed, thus enabling the one using the vessel, at pleasure', and with the leastA4 possible delay and trouble, to change the colander-into a milk-strainer, sieve, waste-pan, dish, wash-basin, or
any other vessel of like character.
A To accomplish this, and in this my inventiouconsists, I construct the vessel with an open bottoni, simply leaving a slight shoulder or flange at the base ofthe howl.
On the lower face of this shoulder I place one of the series of disks or oircular'plates that isdesgued to accompany each bowl."
This plate" l secure and retain-in position by means of an independent hoop or ring, which is of little less diameter than, and is inserted in the hoop that forms, the flanged seat for the bowl. Thishoopis locked in position by means of hooks orother equivalent de.- vice.
To enable others 'skilled in the art'to make and use my invention, I. will now prooeedto describe its con-` struction and operation.
jA is the bowlof the vessel, and
B, the hoop1im that forms its seat.
These are of the usual form, and may be made of any suitable metal.
The entire bottom of the bowl A, with the exception of the shoulderorflauge @,is open.
This Ashoulder' or flange a is formed at the point of union between the bowl and hoop B, and at which the bottoms of such vessels are invariably attached.
C is au independent hoop or ring, and is of such diameter as to allow of its insertion in' the hoop B.
This hoop 'or ring O, when in position, supports the disk or circular' plate that forms the bottom, it being securely held between the upper face vof the same and thev shoulder a;
b bare three or more spring-hooks or elbow-shaped catches, and are attached -to vthe stationary hoop B- in such manner asy to allow of their being thrown down under the hoops B (l, so as to secure the latter vin position.
l) is a colander-bottom, D, a 'milk-strainer, and
D2, a sieve, and are three of theseries of bottoms that is 'to accompany each. bowl. These bottoms are each to be independent, and made ot' the same form'. v
asare the stationary ones now in use.
Thus it will be observed that one vessel will perform vthe duties that now require ten or a dozen, and this, too, at a triding additionalcost, simply the price of the bottoms.
Besides thisgreat advantage, enabling, as it does,
almost every one readily-to procure a complete set olf kitchen utensils .of this character, and'which are now veryexpensive,l as each is -an independent ves-` `insert any of the other of the series of bottoms, and
secure it bythe hoop and catches.
Thus it will Ybe observed that such change is eil' feoted in the vessel that, in an instant, a pan can be turned into a colauder, strainer, sieve, or other utensil required.
Having thus fully described my invention,
Wha-t I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
The bowl A, having a hoop,-B, and shoulder' a,
constructed as stated, independent'hoop C, and hooks b b, when the same are so combined and arranged as to secure either of the series ofbottoms, substantially as described, as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof ,I' have signed my name to this specilication in the presence ot" two subscribing witnesses.
, J. H. CHAPPEL. Witnesses:
En. P. GODDARD, JOHN B. BAKER.
