To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT F. Pn'rrrnonr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Phillipsburg, in the county of Warren and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tension Devices for Shuttles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tension devices for shuttles.
An object of the invention is to provide a tension device for use in place ofthe fur commonly employed to grip the filling or tram as it leaves the quill to apply a tension or retarding motion to the tram to operate the tension ring, whereby the fur may be dispensed with and a more reliable and etlicient tension obtained.
A further object of the'invention is to provide a tension ring of such construction that any ring section thereof, when worn or damaged, may be readily replaced by a new one. l
The invention consists of the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had to the acconr panying drawings, in which Figure tis .1. plan view, partially in tion, of a shuttle embodying my invention. Referring to'the drawing, 1 designates the shuttle body, 2 the bobbin, and 3 the bit or cavity in the body occupied by the bobbin. The filling, tram or weft 4 passes,
in the construction shown, from the bobbin through 1 primary tension device 5 at the forward end of the bit, thence through a guide passage 6 into a chamber or recess 7 at the forward end of the body, thence through the tension ring and finally out through guide spaces formed by a series of pins or spacing members 9.
The primary tension device 5, which is designed to exert a retarding action on the thread, to effect the action of the tension ring 8, is constructed in accordance with my invention of a substantially U-shaped frame 10, stamped or otherwise formed From portion of this frame 10 is secured to the shuttle-body by suitable fastening devices ll, and the sides of said frame are provided with inclined slots 12 in which are slidably and rcvolubly mounted a pair of tempered steel friction rollers 13. The weft 1 passes between these rollers which are revolved thereby and exert a frictional pressure thereon to retard the weft on its passage, thus adapting it to impart a tensional pull to the tension ring 8. The ring 8 is constructed, in accordance with my invention,
of a flat steel plate 14: having at one end a crank arm 15 pivotally mounted upon a pin 16, said crank arm being acted upon by a coiled spring. elastic band or like element 1T, whereby the tension ring is held in normal position. Carried by the plate is a series of tension or guide rings 18 through which the tram passes. Each of these rings is constructed of a piece of spring metal bent to form a ring or eye portion and having its extremities bent to provide hookshaped spring arms 19 enga ing alined transverse notches 20 in the side edges of the plate H. Each eye or guide ring is thus iinlcpendently mounted and applicable and removable at will, so that in the event of any ring becoming worn or broken it may be removed without disturbin the others, and without the necessity of discarding the tension devicens a whole. It will, of course, be understood that in applying or removing a ring the arms thereof are spread apart, and that when placed in position for application, the. arms upon being released will snap into engagement with the notches.
From the foregoing description, the construction and mode of operation of my improved tension device will be readily understood, and it will be seen that it provides a primary tension device which 'obviates the necessity of. employing the fur commonly used, and avoids the objections incident thereto. It will also be seen that the inven tion provides a tension ring having detachable ring members which are. readily removable in case of wear or breakage, thus enabling them to be conveniently replaced with new ones, without the necessity of discarding the entire ringinember, as is necessary in the use of tension rings having fixed rings or eyes.
