arre ALBERT S. NEWTON, F PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
SHOWER-HEAD.
a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of'lthode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shower-Heads, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to shower heads for use in baths and similar apparatus.
The essential objects of my invention are to atl'ord accessibility to thehead for the purpose of cleaning the inner face of the perforated plate;- and to attain this end in a structure which will not impede the discharge of the water passing through the head under pressure, and a construct-ion which is inexpensive and in which the operating arm shall be in frictional COllttlCl'. at those points throughout-its length which register with the series of openings, but at the same time minimizing the frictional area of contact of the arm.
To the above ends my invention consists in such parts, and in such combinations of parts, as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specification and in which like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the views,-Figure l is a side'elevation of my new shower head. Fig. 2. a plan of the same with the body partially broken away, Fig. 3, a central transverse section of the same, Fig. 4, a large partial section corresponding with the section of Fig. 3, showing in side elevation the arm before engagement and 'Fig. 5, a similar section of the same showing the arm in final engagement.
The invention will be described in COIlnection with the specific embodiment shown, but it will be understood that the invention is not to be limited by such specific showing except for such limitations as the claims impart.
The head may be of any desired general construction, but comprises in the present instance a conical body A and a neck ll provided with internal attaching threads 7). Upon the margin of the body is adepending cylindrical rim or flange provided with external threads (2, and having V- sliaped annular grooves upon its bottom t'ace forming annular Projections.
An attaching ring D has internal threads Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed October 23, 1813.
Patented Oct. (5, 1914.
Serial No. 790,938.
(1 adapted to engage the threads 0. It has also an internal annular supporting shoulder The ring has lalerul projections E, and dependinp projections h which are con venicnt to assist the screwing oi the ring upon the llangia but which may be omitted il desired. plate (lresting upon the shoulder d is provided with concentric circular rows of perforations (l to allow the passage of water. A washer H may it desired be inserted between the plate G and the flange 0. The described construction permits the removal of the plate G, but this plate may, if desired, be integral with the body A.
Dirt and other foreign matter carried by the water naturally accumulates at the ma rgins of the holes on the rear face of the plate G. For the purpose of removing this dirt without disassembling the parts, the plate G is provided with a central opening I, in which is journaled a pin K, having a reduced upper portion Z, and upon its opposite end a milled head L provided with a rear face I contacting with the face of the plate G. Through the head L and pin K is manually operated the arm M. The arm is provided near one end with an opening m. through which passes the reduced portion Z of the pin K. This perforated end portion of the arm. as al m, is preferably bent or inclined. The material of the arm is in the present instance tint and resilient.
The arm is provided witha series of alternating rectangular projections m having flat ends m, intermediate which projections are resultant openings or passage m. In Figs. 4 and 5 is shown the method of attaching the arm, which consists in the rivet ing over the top end of the pin to form the head which overlaps the portion m of the arm. By reason of the inclined character of the inner end of the arm and the resilient character of the latter, the formation of the head N, pressesdown the material so as to maintain the projections of. the arm M throughout. its lgngth in close contact with the face of the plate G. The projections n 2 are arranged so as to cover perforations g of the plate. The rotary travel of the arm is limited by a slow projection in the back of the plate (ii, and indicates to the operator when the whole area ot'the plate. has been covered by the rotation or vibration of the arm.
The openings m are advantageous in perinitting the liquid which enters the head under pressure, a free opportunity to rotate upon the rear face of the plate G. 'Where the arm is unprovided with these openings thedisclnn'ge through the plate G would be seriously, impeded.
It has been found to be important that the rotary arm be in close contact with the plate G throughout its length. This end is secured by the means already pointed out. And by reason of the projections only a small area of the arm is in actual contact with the plate G and excessive friction between the arm and the last mentioned plate and consequent error is avoided.
hat I claim is 1. I n a shower head, the combination with the body, of a plate upon the body provided with a central opening, and with a series of perforations arranged concentrically with the opening, a pin rotatably mounted in the opening, a head upon the .pin exterior of the plate, an arm upon the pin extending across the series of mrlo'rations, and spaced projections upon the arm registering with the i the body and neck, of a plate upon the body provided with an opening below the neck, and provided with annularly arranged perforations around the opening, a pin within the opening, a resilient arm fixed upon the pin inside the head extending across the perforations and having projections at intervals throughout its length in frictional contact with the plate and provided with noncontaeting portions intermediate the annular series of perforations.
In testimony whereof I have atlixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ALBERT S. NEWTON.
