(Cl. -345) My invention relates to improvements in handles for mattresses and the like and means for mounting and rigid- 13/ supporting the handle ends for relative rotation on a mat-tress wall, and has for its primary object the provision of a highly satisfactory handle and such mounting means therefor which incorporates a minimum of parts and which consequently may be produced at a minimum of cost.

A further object of my invention is the provision of a device of the class above described which is extremely easy and inexpensive to install and which when so installed is rugged, durable and relatively permanent.

The above and still further objects of my invention will become apparent from the following detailed specification, appended claims and attached drawings.

Referring to the drawings wherein like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views:

FIG. 1 is a fragmentary view in plan of a mattress wall showing my handle attached thereto;

FIG. 2 is a greatly enlarged fragmentary view in longitudinal section taken substantially on the line 2-2 of FIG. 1;

FIG. 3 is a fregmentary view in top plan of the structure of FIG. 2, some parts being broken away and some parts being shown in section;

FIG. 4 is a fragmentary view in perspective of one end of the handle element of my novel structure;

Referring with greater particularity to the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates in its entirety a conventional mattress, the vertical side wall of which is identified by the numeral 2. The handle body element of my invention bears the numeral 3 and, as shown, is formed from relatively rigid material to provide an elongated central grasping portion 4 which is parallel to but spaced from the outer surface 5 of the side wall 2, and a plurality of laterally enlarged opposite end portions 6 which overlie and are adapted to engage said surface 5.

The enlarged opposite end portions 6 of the handle 4 are provided with apertures 7, the axes of which are normal to the plane of the mattress wall 2. Annular clamping washers 8 are adapted to engage the inner surface 9 of the side wall 2 one each concentric with an aperture 7 in the handle element 3. At their radially inner edges, the clamping washers 8 are formed to provide an annular series of integral substantially parallel circumferentially spaced flexible anchoring fingers 10. As shown, these annularly spaced fingers 10 project through the mattress wall 2 in fixedly anchoring the washer to said mattress side wall and thence rotatably through the adjacent apertures 7 in closely spaced relationship to the peripheral walls 11 thereof. The projected outer ends of the fingers 10, as shown particularly in FIGS. 3 and 5, are pointed as indicated at 12, to facilitate anchoring of the washer 8 in the mattress wall 2 with the annular series of finger portions 10 extending beyond said mattress wall to provide generally cylindrical supporting bodies for the apertured opposite ends of the handle member as shown in FIGS. 1 and 2.

Adapted to cooperate with the clamping washers 8 and the flexible anchoring fingers 10 carried thereby to secure- 2,986,748 Patented-M ice 1y clamp the handle element 3 to the mattress wall 2am plate-like anchoring heads identified in their entirety by the numeral 13. Said anchoring heads 13 include disclike central portions 14 which overlie one each one of the apertures 7, and marginal edge portions 15 which overlie said handle element 3 about their respective apertures 7. Preferably and as shown, the handle element 3 is recessed about the apertures 7, as indicated by the numeral 16.

The marginal edge portions 15 include inwardly concave annular grooved portions 17 which are concentric with their cooperating apertures 7 and the radially inner extremities 18 of which are radially inwardly spaced with respect to the peripheral walls 11 of their respective apertures 7. The radially outer extremities of the marginal adge portions 15 of the anchoring heads 13 are bent radially inwardly in spaced relation to the grooved portions 17 as indicated at 19 to provide annular radially inwardly opening retaining pockets 20. Preferably and as shown, the portions 19 are in engagement with the handle element 3 within their respective recesses 16.

It should be obvious from the above that when clamping pressure is exerted both upon the clamping Washers 8 and upon the anchoring heads 13 that the pointed outer ends 12 of the fingers 10 are flared outwardly by engagement with the inwardly concave grooved portions 17, the extreme ends thereof being forced into the radially inwardly opening retaining pockets 20 at circumferentially spaced points-further and final clamping pressure securely gripping said pointed ends 12 within said pockets 24).

My invention has been thoroughly tested and found to be completely satisfactory for the accomplishment of the above objects, and while I have shown a preferred embodiment thereof, I wish it to be understood that same may be capable of modification without departure from the scope and spirit of the appended claims.

What 1 claim is:

l. A handle assembly for mattresses andthe like comprising an elongated body providing a handle element adapted to overlie the outer side wall thereof, said handle element having an aperture therethrough adjacent each end thereof the axis of which is normal to the plane of said wall, an annular clamping washer in engagement with the inner surface of said wall in concentric relationship to each of said aperture and having a plurality of generally parallel circumferentially spaced flexible anchoring fingers projecting through and anchored said wall said anchoring fingers being of a length to extend a material distance through and beyond said mattress wall in providing annular handle supporting and attaching body members on said mattress wall, said body members being of a diameter and size to extend frictionally and rotatably through said apertures in closely spaced relationship to the peripheral wall thereof, and a plate-like perforate anchoring head having a marginal edge overlying said handle about each of said apertures therein, said marginal edge comprising an inwardly concave annular grooved portion which is concentric with said aperture and the radially inner extremities of which are radially inwardly spaced from the peripheral wall of said aperture, the radially outer extremities of said marginal edge being bent radially inwardly and resting upon said handle body about said apertures and defining an annular radially inwardly openingretaining pocket about each aperture, the outer ends of said anchoring fingers extending through and beyond said apertures in said handle body and being flared radially outwardly at their ends by engagement with the concave wall of said grooved portion and received at circumferential-1y spaced points within said retaining pocket.
