I s'rooxLnss ANCHOR.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, AxEL FILII"WAII.DE MAR STAHLBERGER, a subject of the King of Sweden, residing atqgDumbuck Hotel,
Dumba-rton, Scotland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stockless Anchors, of which the following. is a specification. j m i This invention relates to anchors of the stockless type each having a bifurcated shank and a plurality of flukes, and it has for its object to improve their construction in such manner that enhanced strengthand greater gripping efficiency and holding power and, consequently; less weight in a ships anchor equipment, is. attained while the shank shall be of proportionately less length, thereby rendering theanchor more easy of housing.
In order that the invention may be clearly understood I have hereunto appended an explanatory sheet of drawings ,whereon I have shown, in Figures 1. and 2, front and side sectional elevations, respectively, of a preferred form of anchor constructed in accordance with my invention.
As illustrated, the anchor comprises a bifurcated shank N the arms I of which have enlarged bosses E at the lower ends thereof in which is mounted arod or spindle D. Freely and independently mounted upon bushings on the rod or spindle D are three main gripping flukes A, Bf and. C of substantially equal length and the central one, B, of which is normal to said rod while the outer ones, A and C, are splayed. The rod ,1) and, with it, the flukes A, B and C are held in assembled position by nuts G upon the screwed ends of the rod, or by other convenient means, said nuts being locked by rivets or other suitable means.
The flukes A, B and C may be provided with webs H extended to act as tripping blades additional to the usual tripping blades I which are so shaped asto be adapted to act as gripping blades also and the sides of which are undercut to co-act with tapered faces J on the bosses E for limiting their angular travel. The tripping blades or projections on the fluke members co-act with the shank to form overstops.
The head K ofthe shank is rounded to i receive the usual shackle L while two ini Specification of Letters Patent. I
n PatentedOct. ,1914; 3 Application filed April 6, 1914. Serial No. 829,771.
nati"ely, a cross bolt or cross band may be. i
used to keep the shackle inpositioni, It sometimes occurs that, owing to .irreg:
ularity ofthesurface or inequalitytofthe nature of the bottom, it is impossible f for all the flukes of an anchorto grip: simul-i taneously. Under these conditions, with an anchor having two or more flukes capable only of simultaneous movement, it is PCS. i sible that one, or more than; one, .fiukemay grip while the other, or others, is, or are,
brought into contact with a portionofthe.
bottom which it, or they, cannot enter, thereby preventing the fluke, or flukes, which has, or have, already taken a grip entering.
to its, or their, full extent. With an anchor constructed 1 in accordance with1 the. present invention, however, owing to the flukes being independently pivoted, 011e, or more than one, fluke may grip and enter the bottom to ,itsfull extent withoutbeing affected by the remainder while, owing to. the tripping blades being adapted to act as gripping blades. also, the tripping blades of those fiukeswhich do not grip may enter the bottom and will prevent said latter flukes affecting those which have already entered. Further, the bifurcated arms F and the rod E constitute a complete triangle so that, no matter which of the flukes grip, no bending moment will be applied to the shank; i y
Although I have,by way of illustration or example, illustrated and described a preferred form of my inventionit will be understood that numerous structural modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention as defined by the succeeding claims.
Having now fully described my invention,
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patentis 1. An anchor comprising a bifurcated shank and independently pivoted flukes within and without said shank.
2. An anchor comprising a bifurcated shank, a pivoted fluke within said shank and independently pivoted flukes without said shank. 1
3. An anchor comprising a bifurcated shank, a rod carried bysaid shank, a plurality of flukes turnably and independently mounted on said rod, one being within and the remainder without said shank.
a. An anchor comprising a bifurcated shank, a pivotedfluke Within said shank and normal to its pivot and independently pivoted splayed flukes Without said" shank.
5. An anchor comprising. a bifurcated shank, independently pivoted flukeswithin and Without said shank and tripping blades on said fiukes.
6. An anchor comprising. a bifurcated shank, independently pivoted fiukes Within and withoutZsaid shank and tripping blades adapted to act alsoas gripping blades on said flukes.
'7, An anchor comprising a bifurcated shank, a rod carried by said shank, a plu rality' of fiukes turnably and independently mounted on said rod, tripping blades adaptedto act also as gripping blades on said flukes and extensions on said shank adaptedto co-act With said tripping blades to limit the movement of said flukes. I
8. An anchor comprising a bifurcated shank, a rod carried by said shank and form- ,"ing a complete triangle therewith, a plurality of vflukes turnably and. independently mounted on said rod, one being Within and the remainder Without said shank and tripping blades on said flukes adapted to co-act With said shank to limit the movement of said 9. An anchor comprising a bifurcated shank, independently pivoted fiukes Within arms of said shank, a shackle Which is adapt-- ed to pass said projectingv parts and inclependently pivoted flukes'Within and Without said shank.
12. An anchor comprising a bifurcated shank, a fluke Within said shank and flukes.
Without said shank, said first mentioned fluke being capable of movement independently of the other 'flukes.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
