CLAREN'CE GARFIELD YORN', OF MANCHESTER, IWA;
ORDNANCE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led February 2, 1914.
Patented Oct. 6, 191 d. Serial No. 816,016.
To al whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, CLARENCE GARFInLD YORAN, a citizen of the United States, reslding at Manchesteryin the county of Dela- 'ware and State of Iowa, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Ordnance; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable othersskiled in the 'art to which it appert-ains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements 1n ordnance and more particularly to mountings therefor.
The primary object ot the invention is to provide a device of this character employing a plurality of fire arms carried oy a selfpropelled vehicle and having means whereby they may be simultaneously fired and simultaneously adjusted to a lower or higher range.
A secondary object is to construct the mountings of the firearms in such a manner as to render them readily removable for any necessary purpose.
W'ith the above objects in view, the invention resides in certain novel features` of construction and combination herein described and claimed and shown in the drawings wherein Figure l is a side elevation of the invention, parts being broken away and in section; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the forward portion of the parts shown in Fig. l; Fig. 3 is a. transverse section on line 3-8 of Fig. 1: Fig. 4 is a similar view on the line 1 -zt ot' l*`ig..2; and rig. 5 is a detail vertical sec tion on the line 5 5 ot' Fig. 2.
lfn'the accompanying drawings, I have shown an automobile A which is preferably of all metal construction for obvious reasons and is provided with a surrounding wall W which is provided with a door I) at each side of the machine. W'ithn the wall W is a suitable seat- S, steering wheel to and the various levers and pedals necessary Jfor controlling the operating'machinery of the car. The front port-ion 1 of the wall d is proyided with a plurality of spaced upright slots 2 which are disposed in horizontal alinement with similar slots 3 formed in an inclined shield f1 which is secured at its upper end to the port-ion 1 of the Wall IV and at its lower end to the hood H ot' the car. Projecting loosely through the slots '2 and 3, are a plurality of barrels 5 of guns G, the latter being supported as hereinafter described. i
Rigidly supported by the side walls of the car is a transversely disposed horizontal shaft 7 which carries a plurality of spaced supportingr plates 8 which are pivotally. mounted thereon in any suitable manner as by forming eyes 9 on their lower ends and loosely mounting said eyes on the shaft 7. Screws l0 having operating wheels 1.1 are passed loosely through the plates 8 and are threaded into the stocks of the guns G, thereby pivot-ally mounting said guns on the shaft 7.
The portions of the guns (3 directly in rear of the upright portion 1 of the wall IV are supported by means of screws l2 which are revolublv mounted in bearings 13 carried by the Hoor otl the car, their threaded portions being engaged with threaded sockets formed within the supporting blocks lll, to the opposite sides of which are pivoted ears 15 which are hingedly connected as at 16 to curved clamping arms 17 which are adapted to embrace the sides ot' the guns 6 and be secured in position thereon by means of bolts 18 which are pivotally connected at 19 to one of said arms 17 While their free ends are threaded and passed removably through notches 2O formed in the upper ends of the other arms 17 hand wheels 21 being threaded 'on the outer ends ot' said bolts and being adapted to draw the upper ends of the arms 17 toward each other when turned in the proper direction.
Supported beneath the guns 6, is a transverse, horizontally disposed shaft 22 which is revolubly mounted in bearings formed on the lower ends ot' links Q3 which depend from the shatt 7 and are pivotally mounted thereon. The shaft 9.2 is further supported by clamps 24 which are substantially the same construction as the clamps previously described and an extended description thereot' is not thoughtto be necessary. The shaft Q2 is provided with a plurality of radially projecting fingers 25 which are adapted to be brought in contact with the triggers 2li of the guns G- when said shaft is rotated in any suitable manner as by a hand wheel 27, the fingers 25 being disposed in aliluanont so as to simultaneously trip the triggers of all oi the Iguns.
From the above described mounting of vthe guns 6 upon the shaft '7, it will be clearly seen that they are allowed a limited. vertical movement within. the slots 2 and 3, the
' screws 12 being employed for the purpose of effecting said movement and said screws being simultaneously rotated by means ofv mentioned purpose.
In order to more effectuall y shield the operator whose station is within the car A, I provide each one of the guns 6 with a .circular shield 32 which is removably secured to its barrel forward of the slots 3 in thel inclined shield il, and with an arcuate shield 33 which is pivotally connected to the lon'- gitudinal sides of the wall W and is supported in any desired position by means of links 34 which are pivoted to said shield and pass between screws 35 -and said longitudinal walls, the screws being revolubly mounted in suitable lu'ackets and provided with operating handles.
From the above described construction and arrangement of parts, it will be seen that by rotating the wheel 27, the fingers 25 will contact with the triggers 26 of the guns and. will sinmltaneously tire them and that when it is desired to raise or lower the barrels. of said guns, the hand wheel 31 may be rota-ted in the proper direction to effect this movement. During any raising or lowering of the guns, it will be readily seen that the shaft 22 and ingersQ will assume their same relation rel ative-to'the triggers 26, this being due to the suspension of said shaft 22 from the stocks of said guns.
By proper manipulation of my improved ordnance, a clean sweep might easily be made of the enemies lines, since the entire vehicle carrying the guns may be turned from side to side to vary the range of said guns.
By the speeiic mounting of the guns 6, any one of them may be readily removed for any necessary purpose, such as cleaning or the substitution of a new iire arm.
By mounting the shield in the above described manner, it may be lowered when the entire machine is being propelled, thus horizontal allowing a clearer'view for the operator thereof. I
Although I have described my invention with considerable minuleness, i do not wish to be limited to details other than those amplified in the appended. claims. Neither do I wish to be limited to the application of the inventitm to a vehicle, since itis apparent that it would operate to equal advantage on any appropriate form of support.
Having thus described my invent10n,what
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Iatent is:
1. An ordnance comprising an apertured shield, a transverse shaft in rear of said shield, a plurality of guns pivotally supported on said shaft toswing in a vertical plane and having their barrels projecting through the apertures in saidshield, supporting brackets depending from said guns and carrying bearings, a trigger operating shaft revolubly mounted in said Abearings and carrying trigger tripping elements, means whereby said guns may be simultaneously rocked 'around their pivots and means whereby said trigger operating shaft may be rotated.
2. An ordnance comprising an apertured shield, a transverse shaft in rear of sai shield, a plurality'of -guns pivotally supported on said shaft to swing in a vertical plane and having their barrels' projecting through the apertures in said shield, supporting brackets depending from said guns and said'shaft and carrying bearings, a trigger operating shaft revolubly mounted in said bearings and carrying trigger tripping elements, means whereby said guns may be simultaneously rocked around their pivots and means whereby said trigger operating shaft may be rotated.
3. An ordnance comprising an apertured shield, a horizontal shaft in rear of said shield, a plurality of spaced supporting plates pivoted to said shaft, a plurality of verticall adjustable supports forward of said shaft and in rear of said shield, a clamp on each of said supports, a plurality of links depending from said shaft and carrying bearings, clamps rising from said bearings,
a plurality of guns removably held Within the clamps on said supports and said bear- CLARENCE GARFIELD YORAN.
