. To all whom it may concern of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the construction of kegs, barrels or other containers and more particularly to such containers as are made of paper or similar fibrous material.
The main object of the invention is to provide a simple and effective fastener for securing the heads or closures to the body portion of the container.
The invention relates to that class of containers in which the main or body portion is formed of non-metallic material such as,

In the accompanying drawings, Figure .1 is a vertical cross-section through a container constructed in accordance with this invention in one of its forms. Fig. 2 is a similar section through the upper part of a container of a modified form. Fig. 3 is a similar section through the upper portion of a container embodying a further modification of this invention. Fig. 4 is a view of a similar section through the upper portion of a container embodying a further modification.
The invention is herein shown and will be described as applied to a keg or barrel but it will be understood that it may equally well be employed with other forms or contours of containers as for instance rectangu-- lar or square boxes or the llke and 1t 1s not limited to the particular forms shown.
When the invention is applied to kegs or barrelsfthe body of the keg or barrel consists preferably of a cylinder of pa er or other similar non-metallic material 1 ormed in any desired manner. The cylinder l-is preferably formed of a number, of layers of paper superimposed on each other, preferably by spinning, and compressed into a -solid mass, the various layers being preferably united by suitable cement, glue or other adhesive whereby'a very rigid wall is attained; The specific manner of forming the body or cylinder forms no part of my invention-and further description will be dispensed with.
2 indicates bands or hoops which are preferably formed of paper as is the made body of the cylinder 1. The hoops or bands 2 may either be formed on the body 1 at the time of forming the body or may be made separately and subsequently cemented or otherwise secured to the periphery of the body. I
The head of which there is one at each end of the cylinder is formed in any suitable manner. As shown in Figs. 1 and 3, it comprises a paper disk 3 formin the main closure for' the end of the cyllnder. The paper disk 3 is secured, in any desired manner, to a metal rim 4:.- The rim is provided with inner and outer annular fiangespreferably in different planes, the inner flange holding the disk 3 while the outer flange seats on the edge of the container body 1 to protect the raw edge from mutilation.
Referring to the form shown in Fig. 1, the head is secured to the body by fasteners 5 which, as desired, might be wires, strips or continuous bands. In this figure, the fasteners are shown as a plurality of separate strips 5, bent around to encircle the hoops 2,
the one end clenching over the outer flange of the-head rim 4 while the other end is bent under to engage the under side of the hoop. By this construction, the hoop 2 being an integral part of the body 1, the head is securely attached to the body in anobvious manner.
Inthe form shown in Fig. 2 the fastener for the head is shown as a continuous metal hoop or band 6 which also, at its inner periphery 6, forms a seat for the paper disk 3 which is secured thereto in any desired manner. In this case the band 6 encirclesthe hoo and its other edge is spun or otherwise orced into engagement with the under side of the hoop 2.
Referring to Fig. 3, the fastening band 7 is provided with an annular skirt 8 which is in engagement with the periphery of the body 1 beyond the hoop 2. In this case the outer flange of the head rim 4 is somewhat extended beyond the hoo Q and headed into other form 0 tying device wrapped around the skirt 8 and by means of which the band 7 is securely held to the body 1, in this case the clamping action not being dependent upon the engagement of the band 7 with the under side of the hoop 2. 1
It will be understood that this invention is capable of various modifications without departing 'from the spirit thereof as set forth in the appended claims.
In the form shown in Fig. 4 the paper disk 3 is held to an annular rim 10 as in the forms shown in Figs. 1 and 3, that is the rim 10 is provided with a lower flange which forms a seat for the disk 3, the metal of the rim being then spun around the edge of the disk and doubled back on itselfinto engagement with the upper surface of the disk 3. By this construction the disk is firmly held between the flanges of the rim 10 without the necessity of employing any other fastening. devices. As in the form shown in Fig. 2, the rim 10 is forced overthe hoop on the outer periphery of the body 1 and under the lower edge thereof. If desired,
staples or rivets 11 may be employed to fasten the rim to the body in which case it is not absolutely necessary to force the edge of the rim 10 under the hoops 2.
What I claim as my invention is 1. A container comprising a body of paper-like material, a paper hoop. cemented to the periphery of the body, a head, a continuous metal band engaging said head and extending over the rim of this container to the outside of said paper hoop, said band being rovided with a skirt adapted to engage tlie periphery of the body beyond the hoop and means for tying said skirt to said paper-like material, a paper hoop secured to the periphery of said body, a head provided with a flange resting on the edge of said body and a metal band fastener on the exterior of said hoop and adapted to engage the under side of the same whereby the band is prevented from removal in one direction, the edge of said band being spun with the outer edge of the head flange to lock the two together.
4. A container comprising, a body of paper-like material, a paper hoop secured to the periphery of said body near the end thereof, a head, a continuous metal band engaging said head and extending over a portion of said paper hoop and an annular metallic member covering said hoop, and means for maintaining saidparts in the relation specified to retain said head within said body.v
