To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MAURICE LAGHMAN,
a citizen of the United: States, and a resident of New York, in the county of New 5 York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper Containers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to non-metallic shipping and storing containers or receptacles and articularly to such types as-comprise a ho y formed of paper or other similar material.
The invention particularly relates to the manner of reinforcing the paper body and securing the heads or closures thereto.
The object of the invention is to provide metallic reinforcing means for the paper body and to secure both the heads to the body by such metallic reinforcement whereby a rigid, strong container, adapted to resist hard usage, is attained.
A further specific object is to avoid any waste of material in the construction of the reinforcement or head securing means and thereby .cheapen the cost of manufacture.
To these ends the invention consists in the improved structure of non-metallic container hereinafter more particularly described and then specified in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation and partial section of a container constructed in accordance with this invention in one of its forms. Fig. 2 is an enlarged partial section of the same showing the head securing means. Fig. 3 is a plan of the part shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a cross-section through a modified form of reinforcing and head securing member. Fig. 5 is a plan view of a further modification in the. form of said member.
Without in any manner limiting the invention thereto, it will'be herein shown and described as applied to a keg or barrel and when used with such forms, the body consists preferably of a cylinder of paper, straw-board or other similar non-metallic material 1 formed in any desired manner. The cylinder 1 is referably formed of a number of layers 0 paper superimposed on each other, preferably by spinning, and compressed into a very solld mass, the various layers being preferably united by a suitable cement, glue or other adhesive whereby a very rigid wall is attained. The specific manner of forming the cylinder or body forms no part of my invention and further descrlption will be dispensed with.
2 indicates a band or hoop preferably located on the outside of the cylinder 1, one being disposed at each end of the cylinder and each is preferably provided with :1. lateral flange 3 resting on the edge of the cylinder to protect such edges from mutilation.
The heads or closures for the cylindrical body 1, one bemg provided for each end, may be of any suitable construction, a preferred one comprising a paper disk 4 the edges of which are secured between inwardly pro ecting flanges 5, 6 of an annular metal run. The rim is also preferably provided wlth an outwardly projecting flange 7 which seats on the edges of the cylinder 1 or on the flange 3 when such flange is employed. If desired additional means such as the wire 8 may be employed to staple the disk 4 n the rim and which wires also serve as a reinforcement for the head. The construction of the head forming no part of the present invention, further description will be-dlspensed with.
. 9 indicates a metallic band preferably of,
sheet metal passing around preferably on .the outside of the cylinder 1 at about the middle, the ends being joined together in any suitable or desired manner. The band 9 is provided with a plurality of spaced apart metal strips 10 secured to said band and emanating therefrom preferably perpendicular thereto. A set of said strips emanate from the upper and lower edges of the band toward each end of-the cylinder and are of such length that their free ends 11 project beyond the cylinder ends as indicated in Fig. l. Preferably the band 9 and strips 10 are stamped from one piece of sheet metal, the spaces between the strips alsobeing preferably equal in width to the width of the strips whereby no metal is wasted in the formation of this member, the metal removed from the spaces representing the strips of another set of reinforcing strips 10. The strips 10 emanating from each edge of the band 9'are preferably in line but they may be alternately disposed or staggered if desired. The band 9 and its attendant strips 10 may be located on either the inside or the outside of the cylinder 1, the free ends 11 of the strips being bent over the annular metal rim of the heads 4 to secure the heads to the body. Thus a rigid metallic reinforcement for the body is provided which at'the same time provides the means for efl'ectually securing both heads to the body-and bracing the same. If desired to givefurther rigidity, all or .some of the strips 10 may be secured to the bands or hoops 2 in any manner as by passing the ends through eyes 12 formed in the hoops 2.
Instead of the strips 10: being integral with the band'9 as shown in Fig. 1, they may be separate pieces secured to the band by any other suitable means, another method beingshown in Fig. 4 as an instance; In
this modification, the strips are alternately disposed and the ends turn over the edge of the band 9 as indicated at 13, the strips being disposed between the inner periphery ofdtheband and the periphery of the cylin er 1.
While in both of the forms above described the band 9 is merely a single length of metal from which both sets of strips 10 emanate, the said band may comprise two separate lengths or bands 9, 9 as shown in Fig. 5, the bands 9 and9 being united to each other by connectors 14 at intervals about the circumference. Said connectors may be riveted, welded or otherwise secured to the bands. In this modification each separate band 9, 9, constituting with the connectors 14 the band of the reinforcement, is provided with its own set of head securing strips 10. 5 It will be understood that various modifications of the present invention may be resorted to without departing from the spirit thereof as set forth in the appended claims, it being understood that the invention is not limited to the forms shown which are for the purpose of illustration only.
What I claim as my invention is d 1; A container including in combination, a body of paper-like material, a metallic band secured to said body, metallic straps V emanating from said band, hoops adjacent the endsof said body, loops on said hoops and extending over said straps, holding devices formed on said straps, and a head seated on said paper-like body and secured in position by the holding devices on said straps.
2. A container including in combination, a cylindrical paper body, a metallic band encircling said body, fiat metallic members secured to said band and having a greater total length than the length of the body,
hoops adjacent the ends of said body and havin portions extending over the ends-of said at metallic members, heads seated in the ends of said body, andhooks' formed in the ends of .said members and extending over the edge of the rims at the ends of said body and cooperating with said heads to secure said heads to said body.
3. In a container in combination, an in-.
tegral cylindrical body of fibrous material, metallic hoops on each end of said cylindrical body, loops formed upon said hoops, stay members having a total length greater than the length of said body extending lengthwise of said body and through said loops, a head seated in one end of said body, and hooks formed upon said stays and cooperating with said head to secure said head in position.
4. .A contamer comprising an integral body of fibrous material, a supporting member cooperating with said integral body,
said supporting member comprising a hoop and fiat strips extending from said hoop, a head seated in one end of said body, a hoop adjacent the end of the body in which the headis seated, means to secure said strips to said last mentioned hoop, and means carried by said strips to securesaid head within the end of said body.
