Description

UNITED STATES PATENT @Erica JAMEs A. MEDAnrs, or SULLIVAN, iNDrANA.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l1l,22, dated January 21, 1871.
To all whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES A. MEDARIs, of Sullivan, in the county of Sullivan, and in the State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Gang-Plow and Cultivator; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters Aof reference marked thereon, making a part of this specication.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a combined gang-plow and cultivator, as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective View of my machine. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the frames, axle, and wheels. Fig. 3 is a front view of the entire machine; and Fig. 4 is an enlarged side view ofthe device for raising and lowering the frame to which the plows are attached.
A represents the axle, which is bent in crank form at the ends, as shown in Fig. 2, and the wheels placed on the ends. The land-side wheel B is of smaller diameter than the furrow-wheel B, and the latter can be moved in or out on the axle, as may be desired.
On the axle A, just outside of its cranks c a, is placed a frame, C, to which the tongueD is attached, said frame supporting the drivers seat E, as shown.
On the central portion of the axle is placed a frame or platform, G, hinged to the front part of the frame C by means of strap-hinges b b. The axle A is turned so as to raise or lower the platform G by means of a lever, H, attached to the axle, and provided with a pawl, d, which catches in notches upon the edge of a circular guide, E, secured on the inside of the frame C, to hold the frame Gin proper 'p0- sition.
On the sides of the frame or platform G, at the rear end, are fastened blocks I I, in which cultivator-plows J J are secured. Under the front end of said platform are pivoted similar plows, J J, which may be moved from side to side by means of a double foot-lever. f, pivoted on the upper side of the platform. The front end of this foot-lever is slotted, and surrounds a double-twisted rod, h., the ends of which are attached to the plows J J', so that said plows are moved together at one time, to
one side or the other, by moving the footlever f.
On the under side of the fra-me or plat-form G are, in any suitabl manner, attached plows K K, and behind these the subsoilers L L.
For protecting the young corn, a fender, M, may be attached in any suitable manner.
On the rear edge of the frame or platform G are secured two rods, i z', which extend along the upper side of said platform or frame, and at the front edge thereof the rods are tached to a false double-tree, N, having first passed through staples to hold them down. rPhe main double-tree 0, with single-trees PP, is attached to the false double-tree N by means cfa suitable clevis. By this arrangement ofthe draft at the rear end of the frame, the tendency will be to raise the frame and plows, thereby relieving the weight on the wheels.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The arrangement of the axle VA with cranks a a, wheels B B, frame C, and frame or platform G, all substantially as shown and described.
2. The arrangement of the frame G, side blocks, I I, cult-ivator-plows J and J, plows K, and subsoilers L, all as shown and described.
3. The arrangement, with the frame or platform G, of the hinged cultivator-plows J J', rod h, foot-lever f, rodsz' z', false double-tree N, double-tree O, and single-trees P P, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 15th day of April, 1870.
JAMES A. MEDARIS.

MICHAEL ADoooK, J oHN F. SANDEEs.
