DITCHING-IBLOW'.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept. 29,1914,

To all whom it may concern} Be it known that we, BENJAMIN A. Jon- DAN and EDWARD J. TE GRoTENHUIs, citizens of the United States, and residents of Crawford, in the county of Delta :and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ditching-Flows, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention is an improvement in ditching plows, and has for its object, the provision of a simple, easily operated device of the character specified, by means of which a plurality of parallel ditches orgrooves may be marked off, wherein the distance between the grooves may be varied at will, as also the depth of the said grooves.

The present embodiment ofthe invention comprises a frame composed of two bars 1 and 2, arranged alongside each other, in
spaced relation, the said bars diverging slightly toward their rear ends. A tongue 3 is arranged between the front ends of'the bars, and the tongue and the front ends of the bars are connected by upper and lower cross straps 4: and'5. An axle 6 is j ournaled transversely of the bars and tongue, in bearings 7 on the lower faces of the bars, and in a bearing 8 on the upper face of thetongue. The bearing 8 is formed-by the front end of spring plate 9, secured to the tongue by bolts 10, and a seat 11 is secured to the rear "end of the plate, the plate being bent upwardly behind the bearing, as shown in Fig. 1. clevis 12 is secured to the tongue, by means of the bolt 13 which connects the straps 4 and 5 to the tongue, and the front end of. the clevis is offset upwardly from the tongue,
and a bolt or pin 14: is passed through, they offset end and the tongue. Any suitable form of draft apparatus may be connected to the bolt. Wheels 15 are journaled on the ends of the axle, and braces 16 are arranged between the axle, the bars 1 and 2, and the tongue. Each brace has a bearing rin 17 at its rear end engaging the axle, and eld in place by a set screw 18, and from the ring the brace extends forwardly and inwardly to a connection at l9'to the front end of the adjacent bar 1 or 2 and thence again forwardly and inwardly to a connection with the tongue at 20. The bearings 17 form a stop for the inner end of the hub of the adblade, at its center, the plate extending j acent wheel, and a nut 21' engages the axle at the outerend of. each wheel. A shaft 22. .is journaled in bearing brackets 23 on the rear ends'of bars 1 and 2, and each end of the shaft has a radial arm 24.. A lever 25 is rigidly connected to the shaft near bar 1, and the said lever isprovided with the usual latch mechanism 26, cooperating with a toothed segment 27 secured to the bar 1, for holding the shaft in adjusted osition. A shaft 28 is arranged in rear 0 the frame, with its ends extending beyond the frame at each side, and the shaft is supported from the arms 24, by means of hangers 29. Each hanger has an eye orloop 30 at its lower end,
engaging the shaft and the upper end is slotted to receive theadjacent arm, which is pivoted to the arm by apinor bolt 31.
When the shaft 22 is oscillated by the lever 25, the shaft 28 will be raised or lowered, and may be held in adjusted position, by
means ofthe quadrant andlatch mechanism.
A plow beam .32 is arranged at each side of the frame, each beam havlng a loop or an eye 33 at itsfront end for engaging the axle.
The rear end of the beam curves'downwardly and forwardly, as shown at 34 and "a plow is secured to the lower end of each of the beams; The adjacent end of shaft 28 extends beneath each beam, near the. commencement of the downwardly curving portion, for supporting the same, and for permitting the beams-to be raised or lowered by the lever25. Each of the beams 32-3334.- is composed of a comparatively wide bar of quarter turn and extending rearwardly with thejportions of the bar contacting to a point w near shaft 28. The portions of the bar are then separatedislightly and extend parallel to form the. remainder of the beam;
The plow mentioned consists of a blade 35 at the rearof the beam, the said blade extending onbothsides of the beam. The central portion of the blade'bears against the rear face of the portion 34. of the beam, andthe sides are bent rearwardly with re-.
spect to the centralportion. .-A reinforcing 1 plate 36 is fitted against the rear face of the metal, bent upon. itself to form the eye or loop 33, the doubled bar being then given a beam, and through the blade 85 and plate 36, and are engaged by nuts 89 at the rear of the said plate. The "blade 37 is pointed at its lower end, and extends below the lower end of the beam, while the blade alsol extends slightly. below the said lower end.

form of a U-bolt, the body engaging the,
axle, and the arms extending through the adjacent bar, and being engaged by nuts 43 abovethe bar. The rear arm of the -U-bolt at each-side extends also through the slot 42 of the adjacent strap. The straps extend at a slight angle to the axle, and the arms or lugs 41 engage opposite sides of the upper portion of the loop or eye 33 of the adjacent beam. When the nut 43 of the rear arm of the Li -bolt or hearing 7 is loosened, the loop or eye 33 may be moved longitudinally of the axle, and when in proper position may be so held by tightening the bolt. The beams are detachably secured to the shafts 28, by means of U-bolts 44-, which engage the shaft, the arms extending upwardly between the two portions of the adjacent beam. A
each strap having-openings for the arms of the adjacent ll-bolt, and nuts 46 are engaged with the arms abovethe strap. The shaft 28 is thus rigidly secured to both of the beams, and by means of the lever '25, the plows may be held rigidly at any desired depth. The adjusting mechanism for the plows is very easily operated, while holding the beams firmly in position.
In operation, the machine is driven through the field in the usual manner, the beams being adjusted toward or from each -L other to make the grooves or ditches at the proper distance "from each other. The depth of the grooves or ditches may be varied, by raising orlowering the beams, by v 'means of levers 25. 1
When it is desired to adjust the plow beams laterally of the axle, the nut 43 on that portion of the U-bolt 7 engaging the slot 42, is loosened. The bolts 46 on the hangers are then loosened, and the beam is adjusted. When in adjusted position, the bolts 43 and 44 are tightened to hold the beams in adjusted position.
We claim:
1. A plow of the character specified, comprising a frame, an axle journaled transversely of the frame, wheels on the axle, a plow beam slidably connected at its front end with the axle at each side of the frame, means for securing the beams in adjusted position, a plow connected to the rear end of each beam, and means for simultaneously raising and lowering the beams, said means comprising a shaft arranged beneath the rear ends of the beams and detaclmbly secured thereto, a shaft ournaled on the rear end of the frame and provided at each end with a rearwardly extending arm, a hanger connecting each arm to the first named shaft, and means for oscillating the lastnamed shaft.
2. A plow of the character specified, comprising a frame, an axle journaled transversely of the frame, wheels on the axle, a plow beam slidabl'y connected at its front end with the axle at each side of the frame, uneans for securing the beams in adjusted position, a plow connected to the rear end of :each beam, and means for simultaneously raising and lowering the beams, said means comprlsing a shaft arranged beneath the rear ends of the beams and detachably secured thereto, and means for raising and lowering the shaft. strap 45 is arranged above each of the beams,
3. A ditching plow comprising a frame,
an axle journaled transversely of the frame,
a wheel at each end-0f the axle, a plow beam slidably connected to the axle at each side of the frame, a plow secured to each beam, means for simultaneously raising and lowering the beams, and means for securing the beams to the axle in adjusted position, said means comprising a bar for each beam provided with a pair of spaced laterally extending lugs engaging the beam, and a slidable connection between the inner end or each bar and the frame.
