To 00 whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM a citizen of the United States, residing at Everett, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certainnew and useful Improvemnt-s in Traps, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. This invention relates to certain improvements in traps and has relationmore particularly to a device of this general character as employed in households and the object of the invention is to provide a device of this general character of a simple and comparatively inexpensive nature having means of a novel and improved character whereb the trap may be properly flushed to remove therefrom all sediment that may accumulate therein. 1
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will be carefully defined in the appended claim.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view, with parts in elevation, taken through a trap constructed in accordance with an embodi- .ment of my invention; Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1, with certain of the parts shown adjusted into a position different from that shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the device as shown in Fig. 1, with certain of the parts being'omitted; and Fig. 4c is a horizontal sectional view taken through Fig. 1, at substantially the longitudinal center thereof.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, 1 denotes a hollow body of any ordinary construction but preferably cylindrical in form having its upper face open and adapted to be closed by the cap 2, such cap 2 being provided with an externally threaded annular flange 3 adapted to be engaged with corresponding threads roduced on the inner surface of the body, a jacent the open end thereof and in order to expedite the J L McLean,

V, In communicatlon with the chamber 6 at substantially the center of the base or closed end ,9 of the body 1 is the outlet pipe 10 adapted to lead to the waste pipe of the sewerage system and positioned within the chamber 6 and disposed vertically therein is the tubular member or sleeve 11 of predetermined length and having its lower end portion 12 adapted to be projected within the adjacent portion of the outlet pipe and being provided a suitable distance above such lower end with the outwardly directed annular flange 14 adapted to contact with the base 9 of the body 1 whereby the downward movement of such ,member 11 within the pipe 10 is limited. Suitably positioned in a wall of such member 11 adjacent the upper end thereof is theopening 15 through which the fluid within the trap is adapted to pass in a manner which is believed to be obvious, it being understood that the engagement or contact of the flange 1 1 with the base 9 is such as to constitute a water-tight joint. The upper end of the member 11 is closed by a suitable cap 16 preferably in threaded engagement therewith and upwardly from which projects a rod 17 directed through a suitable opening 19 produced in the closure member or cap 2 and extending a predetermined distance above thetrap 1 and in pivotal and sliding engagement with a lever member 20 suitably mounted for rocking movement upon any convenient support and adapted to be maintained against movement by coacting with the adjacent rack member 21.

I claim:
A Water trap comprising a vertically disposed hollovv cylindrical member having its ends closed and provided in its lower end With an outlet having a discharge pipe in communication therewith at a point adjacent its lower end and also provided with an inlet opening in the side wall having an inlet pipe in communication therewith, a vertically disposed tubular body within the cylinder, the upper end thereof being closed and having its lower extremity normally inserted within the outlet, said body being provided with an opening on a side wall adjacent the closed end thereof, an annular flange projecting outwardly from the tubular body in close proximity to its lower end and serving to limit the insertion of said body within the outlet, and means for imparting endwise movement to the body.
