MUFFLER-CONTROL LEVER FOR MOTOR-VEHICLES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 29, 1914:.
Application filed February 24, 1914. Serial No. 820,781.
To all whom it may concern:
residing at Pontiac, in the county-of Oakland and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mother-Control Levers for Motor-Vehicles, of which the following is a specification, ref erence being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to control levers particularly designed for the operation of the mufller cut-out valve of motor vehicles, and it is the special object of the invention to obtain a construction which may be easil adjusted to the particular vehicle on whic it is placed.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of the lever in engagement with its locking plate; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the upper endoflthe lever; and Fig. 3 is a cross section showing the manner of adjustment.
A is the cut out valve of a mufller. B is a rod or lever for actuating said valve, which projects upward therefrom through a slot C in a guide plate D and which is provided with an operating cross head E above the plate D and a locking cross head F below said plate, with an intermediate portion G having parallel sides engaging the sides of the slot C. The plate D is provided at one point with a groove or recess ll for receiving the cross head I, in which position the valve A is closed, but when the rod is depressed and moved out of engagement wlth said recess, this will open the valve.
To operate properly the length of the rod B must exactly correspond with the space provided between the plate D and the valve A, but as the former is mounted upon the body of the vehicle (not shown) and the latter upon the chassis frame, there sists in forming the rod oftwo sections B and B ,.which have a threaded engagement wlth each other and consequently may be lengthened and shortened by relative turning. In the normal position of the rod, however, it is held from turning by the engagement of the flattened portion G with the side of the slot C, but above this portion and between the same and the head E is a rounded shank portion I, which may be turned in theslot.
In adjusting the device to the car, the head E is first inserted through the slot C and then turned, while the portion I is engagement with said slot, to a transverselyextending position. The spring J, which closes the valve A, will press the rod upward and hold the flattened portion G in engagement with the slot to prevent turning of the head E when normally opera-ted, but if it is-required' to adjust the length of the rod, this may be done by depressing the head until the shank I engages the slot,
portion G will hold it from turning.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. The combination with an automatically closing valve, of an opening device therefor, comprisin a rod connected with the valve, a slotted plate through which said rod passes, cross heads on said rod above and below said plate, a portion intermediate said cross heads for engaging the sides of said slot and preventing turning of the rod therein, and a portion between said guide portion and the upper cro-ss head rotatable in saidslot when in engagement therewith.
2. The combination with an automatically closing valve, of a rod for opening said valve, a slotted plate through which said rod passes, cross heads on said rod above and below said plate, an intermediate portion for engaging the sides of said slot to hold said rod from turning, and a portion adjacent said intermediate portion rotatable in said slot when in engagement therewith.
3. The combination with an automatically closing valve, of a rod for opening said valve formed in two sections having a threaded engagement with each other permitting of relative longitudinal adjustment,
a slotted guide through which one of said sections passes, cross heads on said section above and below said plate, an intermedithe sides of said ate portion for engagin slot to prevent rotation 0 said section therein, and a portion adjacent said intermediate portion rotatable in said slot, permitting of adjustment of said sections.
4. The combination with an automatically 1o plosing valve, of an opening device there-,
for comprising a rod connected with the valve, a slotted plate through .which said rod passes, a cross-head adjacent said plate, a portion adjacent said cross-head for engaging the sides of said slot and preventing 15
