To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER D. Ross, citizen of the United States, residing at Anniston, in the county of Calhoun and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Core-Bars, of which the following isa specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in core-bars.
The primary object of the invention is to improve the construction of the bar illustrated in Patent No. 721,837, granted me March 8, 1903.

plates an improvement in the expanding and contracting Vmechanism of the bar as well as to improve the construction of the heads which are arranged within the bar and which are disposed to support the same.

In the construction shown in the above mentioned patent, the bar is formed in two sections, this construction being followed out generally in the present arrangement. The sectional body portion ofthe bar, indicated generally by the reference numeral 10, is preferably nearly` circular in cross section, but the same may be of any desired configuration, being provided with the longitudinal slot 11 the walls 12 of which are beveled to receiveV the beveled edges of the wedge 13. This wedge extends the entire length of the main body and is supported to move longitudinally and transversely of the main body. The bar may be i of any desired length, and arranged within the main body at intervals are the heads 14 of a number consistent with the length of the bar. One of these heads is disposed at one end of the bar,the same in addition to performing its function of supporting the bar being provided with means for lifting the bar from the mold.
The heads 14 consist of the hingedly connected members 15 and 16 and the hinge 17 connecting said members. Each of the members 15 and 16 is substantially semicircular and of a width to properly support the body portion yof the bar, the sections being secured to the sections of the bar 10 in any suitable manner. It will thus be noted that as the members are secured to the body portion their movement with respect to each other will cause the expansion vand contraction of said body portion. The section 15 is formed with a hub portion 18 which is connected to the member by the arms 19 which radiate from the hub. The hub member is provided with the bore 20 which receives the pin 21, the pin 2l in the end head supporting at its end remote from the interior of the bar the members 22 b means of which the bar is lifted from the mold, being provided with a head to receive a` suitable lifting tool. This pin pro jects on both sides of the hub and is provided with stops 23 shown in detail in Fig. 10, the construction of which is somewhat modified in the end heads. The stops consist of plates 241 which are rotatably mounted on the terminals of the pins 21,
the plates extending radially of the hub portion. These plates are formed with annular flanges 24 which embrace the hub portion. The plates are provided at their edges remote from the hub with the curved Contact shoe`25 `which embraces the curved web portion 26of the section 16 of the head. This section is supported by the radially extending arms 27 in the same manner that the arms 19 support the hub of the other section of the head. These stops are disposed to limit the movement of the sections of the head when the same are expanded, thus preventing the bar from being spread out of shape.
The sliding wedge 13 of the bar is provided with tapered edges 28 which agree with the tapered walls of the slot 11 in the main portion of the bar. This wedge 13 is designed to separate the edges of the sections of the bar to expand the same, said sliding wedge, when the bar -is expanded, assuming a position between the edges of said sections and co-acting therewith to produce aV circular body, or if the bar be of other cross-sectional desi-gn, to form a continuous surface. The wedge member is provided on its inner face with plates 29 (this construction being shown in detail in Fig. 6) which are provided with apertured ears 30,r one of said ears being received between the bifurcations 31 of the arm 32 which is bentto form a yole 33. The terminal 34 of the arm 82 more vremote fromv the yoke is bifurcated and apertured to receive a pin which passes through rthe same and a lug 85 which is supported by thefplate 35', said plate rbeing secured tothebar 10 An arm 36. is supported by the upper plate 29, the terminal 37 of said arm being bifurcated to receive the apertured lug which is supported by theplate and the arm adjacent one of itsends being provided with the extension 38 which is embraced ybythe bifurcated terminal 39 of the interiorly threaded member 40 which constitutes the female member of a turn buckle. The end head is providedv with a supporting plate 41, said plate y,receiving the vpin 21, the stop 23 in this construction being formed integral with y said plate. A wear plate 41 'is secured to the plate 41, the plate 41 being provided with shoes 4:2 and the platel 41 being formed with curved portions 43 which are of the same configuration as the shoes 42, the shoes andthe edge portions of the plate contacting with the inner wall of the bar. The wear plate 41 is lprovided with a slot 44 which registers with the opening 45 formed in the plate 41, there beinga rod 46 disposedto extend through said plates, the rod being formed with a head 47 by means of which the same may be rotated. The terminal 48 of said rod `is screw-threaded and extends within the screwthreaded member 40 which is connected to the extension 38 ofthe arm 36, the rod passing through the yoke 33 of the larm 32 as shown. rllhel arm 36 is 'connected' by means of the bar 49 with a plurality 'ofarms 50 which connect the wedge member 13 with a section of the barv 10 in the same 'manner as do the arms 3G and 32. It will be understood that the' arms are of a number consistent with the length of. the bar, and certain of the arms are provided kcentrally with an aperture to receive a pin 53 passing through apertures formed in the bifurcations 5:2 of the connecting member 51, the connecting member thus being supported for a pivotal movement with respect tothe arm.` The other terminal ofthe connecting member is bifurcated, the bifurcations extending at right angles to those formed at the firstnamed end of the same. These bifurcations are apertured and receive a pin 54, said pin extending through a link of a chain 55 which extends transversely of the bar, its terminals being secured at diametrically disposed points to the wall of the bar, the terminals of said chain being secured to eye bolts 55 which pass through the plates 5G. `Upon the outer end of each of said eye bolts is a nut 57 which is counter-sunk in the outer face of the bar, the counter-sunk portion being of such size as to permit the nut to be rotated to tighten the chains through the medium of the eye bolts. Thus it will be noted that the chains may be conveniently tightened.
rIhe sliding wedge member 13 is provided with a head-engaging wedge 58 which consists ofthe tapered portions 59 which ride within inclined slots 60 of the head, the portions 59, when the head is contracted, extending beyond the head and allowing the members which constitute the head to move on their hinge connection, the sections each forming one-half of the wedge socket. It will be noted that as the rod 48 is rotated, the same being supported against longitudinal movement, the terminal member 40 will be moved with respect tothe head. As the rod is turned in one direction, the member 40 will be moved away from the head, this movement disposing the arms which connect the sliding wedge member with the wall of the bar at right angles to said wall and forcing the wedge member into Contact with the walls of the slot 11, thereby expanding the heads. The stops 23, by their engagement with the webs of the sections 16, limit the expanding movement of the sections which constitute the head. When it is desired to collapse the bar, the rod 48 is turned in the opposite direction so as to draw the member 40 toward the end head and move the arms out of their right angle position with respect to the wall of the bar, the wedge members being thereby actuated so as to permit and cause the sections of the heads to move inwardly. The chains vwhich connect the walls of the bar are in eiect shortened by this movement of the several arms, the shortening of the chains contracting the bar as the wedge members permit of said contraction. 1t will be noted that when the bar is contracted, the wedge member 13 moves longitudinally and transversely with respect thereto, moving transversely to permit the edge portions 12 of the bar to be drawn together, and longitudinally to cause the wedges 58 to move toward the more widely separated ends of the slots 60 in the heads so that the head sections will swing together, this combined movement of\ the wedge member allowing for contraction of the bar and causing said contraction by the shortening of the chains. 1t will thus be noted that when the metal is cooling and it is desired Cre to remove the bar, the same may be readily contracted and withdrawn from the mold, permitting the metal to contract as it cools.
Having described the invention, what I claim is:
l. A collapsible core-bar comprising a main body portion, said body portion being slotted throughout its length, a member movable within the slot formed in portion, supporting heads arranged within the body portion, said heads being formed of hingedly connected sections which are secured to said body portion, means carried by the movable member for moving the sections of the heads to expand saidbody por-` tion, and means carried by one of the sections and contacting with the other for limiting the movement of said head sections.
2. A collapsible core-bar comprising a main body portion, said body portion being slotted throughout its length, a member movable within the slot formed in the body portion, supporting heads arranged within the body portion, said heads being formed of hingedly connected sections which are secured to said body portion, means carried by the movable member for moving the sections of the heads to expand said body portion, and means for limiting the expansion of the head sections, said means comprising" a fiange plate supported by one of said sections.
3. A collapsible core-bar main body portion, said body portion being slotted throughout its length, a member movable within the slot formed in the body portion, supporting heads arranged within the body portion, said heads being formed comprising a of hingedly connected sections which are secured to said body portion, means carried by the movable member for moving the sections of the heads to expand said body portion, and means for limiting the expansion of the head sections, said means including a member supported by one of the head sections and disposed to contact with the other head section.
4. A collapsible core-bar main body portion, said body portion being slotted throughout its length, a member movable within the slot formed in the body portion, supporting heads arranged within the body portion, said heads being formed of hingedly connected sections which are secured to said body portion, means carried by the movable member for moving the sections of the heads to expand said body portion, and means for limiting the expansion of the head sections, said means including a plate supported by one of the sections of the head, said plate being formed with a curved flange disposed to contact with the other head.
5. A collapsible core-bar comprising a main body portion, said body portion being comprising a the body `a pivotal connection with the with a hub portion, `hub portion,
slotted throughout its length, a member movable within the slot of said body portion, the outer face of said member and the outer face ofthe body portion forming a continuous surface when the movable member assumesits position within said slot, supporting heads disposed in spaced relation within the body portion, arms having body portion and the movable member, a bar connecting said arms, means for moving said bar longitudinally of the body portion to impart movement to the movable member, and a fiexible connection between said arms and the inner wall of the body portion. y
6. A collapsible core-bar comprising a main body portion, said body portion being slotted throughout its length, a longitudinally movable member arranged to enter the slot formed in said body, heads disposed in spaced relation within said body portion, said heads including hingedly connected sections, one of said sections being formed a pin supported by said a plate supported by said pin, said plate being formed with a curved flange, the other head section being provided with a curved web concentric with the curvature of said flange, said plate limiting the expansion of the head, and means for expanding said body.
7. A collapsible core-bar comprising a hollow body, said i body being slotted throughout its length, a longitudinally movable section disposed for movement within the slot formed in said hollow body, supporting heads disposed in spaced relation within the body, said heads including hingedly connected members, the members being connected to the body, means carried by the longitudinally movable section for separating the sections of the head to expand the body, members rotatably supported by one head section and disposed to contact with the adjacent head section for limiting the movement of the body, a connection between the longitudinally movable section and the hollow body, and a fiexible member connecting the walls of the hollow body and disposed transversely of the connection between the longitudinally movable section and the hollow body.

A collapsible core-bar comprising a hollow body, said body being slotted throughout its entire length, a longitudinally movable section disposed for movement within the slot formed in said hollow body, supporting heads disposed in spaced relation within the body, said heads including hingedly connected members, means carried by the longitudinally movable section for moving the sections of the head with respect to each other to expand the body, rotatably supported stops carried by one section of each head and disposed to contact 130 will be contracted when the links are moved in one direction.
