Crosby, in the county of Crow WVing and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Photo- Negative Driers, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings. a

, This invention relates to photo negative driers. i i

The emulsion on negatives is very sensitive and soft after developing and fixing, and will often in hot and sultry weather melt and therefore either entirely ruin the negative, or render it unfit for use. In order to obviate this, it is necessary to subj ect the prepared negative to a draftof air, but heretofore the difiiculty has been, so far as is known, that where a negative is placed in a natural draft, without some artificial protection, it is liable to become injured by dust, and where artificial means, such as an electric fan, is employed to create, a draft the expense will prove a serious handicap, and also the difficulty in rural districts of obtaining electric power for driving the fan will, in many instances, preclude the installation of such means. v v

The object of the present invention. is to. provide a photo negative drier which shall be of such construction as to permit of its being readily manufactured by a person of ordinary mechanical skill, and which in operation will not only be thoroughly effective in generating a natural draft through the drier, but will, also protect the contained negatives from danger of becoming damaged by dust and other impurities. j

With the above and other objects in view, as will appear as the nature of/the invention is better understood, the same consists, generally stated, in a photo negative drier embodying a chamber or casing arranged to' maintain the negatives placed therein in spaced relation, and to provide a tortuous passage therebetween whereby to insure the most effective action upon the sensitized surface of the air currentpassing through the chamber. The chamber or casing is provided with dust proof top, bottom and sides, and with one open end, the other end being closed and having combined with'it a section of stove pipe that is designed to be inserted within the stove pipe opening of Specification. of Letters Patent.

the chimney, whereby at all times toinsure a draft or suction through thecasing. In order topermit the passage of air through the casing without the entrance of dust, there is combined with the structure a shield in thenature of a length of cloth, such as cheese cloth, which is securely fastened around the "open end and sides of the casing ,and is readily removed therefrom for the purpose of laundering. v

The structure asa whole .is a cheap grade of stoclnand will require no expensive fittings to render it thoroughly, effective in accomplishing the results designed.

In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which like characters of reference designate corresponding parts: Figure 1 is a viewin perspective of the apparatus showing the parts closed; Fig. 2 is a similar view with the parts open to display the interior and exterior mechanism thereof; Fig. 3 is a plan view, part in section of the apparatus; Fig. f is a perspective detail view of a holder with the improvement employed in conjunction with the apparatus.

' The apparatus comprises a chamber consisting of a top 1, a bottom 2, two sides 3 "and 4 and an end consisting of two

5 and 6. The bottom is approximately solid, while the top is provided with arectangular opening adapted to be closed by a hinged door or cover 7 which will fit within the opening of the top in such manner as to se cure a dust proof juncture between the parts. As shown, the top and bottom are built up of short pieces of stock, this forthe purpose of cheapness, but it is to be understood that a particular manner of constructing these parts is not essential, as any preferred mode may be employed. The sides, adjacent their ends, have secured to them vertical cleats 8, 9 and 10, the samearrangement being observed on both sides, and the bottom is reinforced by transverse cleats 12.

j The inner walls of the two sides are provided with vertical grooves or channels 13, that are arranged in break-joint order and are designed to receive the ends of the negatives N and hold them properly spaced apartand in vertical position, the. chamber being of such width that the negatives will not reach entirely across the same so that a tortuous passage will be formed between the positioned negatives that will be effective Patented Sept. 29, 1914.

at the same time preclude in causing air passing through the structure to be equally applied to each of the negatives, thus to insure effective drying thereof.

The heads at the top and bottom of the casing at the open end thereof are preferablyrounded, although this is not essential, and the heads or ends 5 and (S are each provided with

15 and 16, respectively, and the latter opening is engaged by one end of a length of stove pipe P, the other end of which'is'designed to be inserted in the flue hole of a chimney.

In order to permit the passage of currents of air through the chamber or casing and the entrance of dust or any other substance that would cause deterioration of the negatives, a shield 16 is provided, the same consisting of a length of cheese cloth, the opposed edges of which are provided with marginal pockets, in

which are arranged draw strings 17 which serve to secure theshield firmly around the casing and to-the' upper and lower edges thereof. j I v In order to permit theapparatns to be used when drying plates of different sizes, frames or holders may be employed, which will be of a size to-admit of their being inserted from the open top of the casing, one of these frames being shown in Fig. 4, and which consists of a bottom 18 and

19 and 20, the latter being providedwith vertical grooves or channels 21 corresponding to like parts 13 in the walls of the casing.

In the use of the apparatus, the same is positioned with the fine or pipe P disposed within the chimney fine, and when charged or loaded with plates, the cover 7 is closed and the shield 16 placed in position, and thereupon a natural draft will be forced through the chamber due to the updraft of the chimney and this will operate in a rapid and thoroughly effective manner to accomplish the drying of the plates in the minimum of time.

.It will be obvious that this apparatus is more particularly designed for use by photographers in rural districts where stove pipe fines are in use, but it will be evident that it could be quickly attached for use by photographers in cities, as it would be an easy matter to provide an opening in tne wall for the reception of the pipe, and con nect the latter with a wooden flue extending above the roof.

The improvements herein described are simple in character, will be found thoroughly eflicient for the purposes designed and will coact in'the presentation of a practical, durable and easily drier.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:

1. A photo negative drier comprisin a chamber having sides provided with vertical grooves or channels, a hinged top and a solid bottom, one end of the chamber being open, heads secured to the other end and provided with an opening, a line arranged in one of the heads, and a fabric shield detachably secured around the open end and sides of the chamber.

2. A photo-negative drier comprising a chamber having sides provided with ver tical grooves or channels, a hinged to J and a solid bottom, one end of the chamber being open, and a flue in communication with the chamber through the opposite end.

3. A photo-negative drier comprisirn a chamber having sides provided with vertical grooves or channels, a hinged top and a solid bottom, one end of the chamber being open, heads secured to the opposite end and provided with an opening, and a flue arranged in one of the heads.

4. A photo-negative drier comprising a chamber having sides provided with vertical grooves or channels, a top provided with an opening, means for closing said opening in the top, a solid bottom, one end of the chamber being open, a fine in communication with the chamber through the opposite end, and a fabric shield detachably disposed across the open end of the chamber.

5. A photo-negative drier comprising a constructed photo-negative chamber having sides provided with vertical grooves or channels, said sides being spaced apart a distance in excess of the width of a negative, a hinged top and a solid bottom, one end of the chamber being open, and a flue in communication with the chamber through the opposite end.

6. A photo-negative drier comprising a chamber having sides provided with vertical grooves or channels, the grooves or channels in one side being positioned intermedi ate the grooves or channels of the opposite side, a hinged top and a solid bottom, one end of the chamber being open, and a fine in communication with the chamber through the opposite end.
