UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT RONTKE, OF BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE SINGER MANU- FACTURING COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
FABRIC-GUIDING ATTACHMENT: FOR. SEWING-MACHINES.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT RoN'rKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bridgeport, in the county of F airfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fabric- Guiding Attachments for Sewing-Machines, of which the following is --a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in fabric-guiding attachments for sewing machines, and has for its object to provide improved means for positioning and securing the attachment with respect to the line of needle actuation.
In the earlier constructions of fabric-guiding attachments provided with multiple guiding elements, as is theimproved device, the effective adjustment of the separate guides is confined to a line substantially transverse to the line of scam formation, while in the present instance the guiding elements are capable of adjustment in transverse directions, and at any point within the field of such adjustment.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating the invention, in the several figures of which like parts are similarly designated, Figure 1 is a plan view of a portion of the bed-plate of a sewing machine fitted with the improved fabric-guiding attachment, Figs. 2 and 3 are plan views of the attachment shown in Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is a central 9 cross section on the line AB, Fig. 1.
Referring to the figures, 1 represents the bed-plate of a sewing machine, 2 the needle or throat plate and 3 the front slide plate of usual construction.
l represents the fabric guide frame provided with guiding members a, b, c, d, whose guiding surfaces are of different lengths and a central circular opening 5 into which latter is rotatably secured a frame cap or securing member 8 provided with a slot 9 extending in opposite directions across the axis of said frame cap, the latter being secured in said frame by forcing the flanges 6 and 7 formed integral with said cap, in sliding relationship with the inclined wall 11 of said frame, a screw 10 threaded into the bed-plate 1 acting to secure said guide frame and frame cap in their adjusted positions.
Referring to Fig. 1, the guiding member a is shown at its limit of adjustment back Specification of Letters Patent.

from the needle in a line transverse to the line of scam formation and intersecting the hue of needle actuation, as when employed for curvilinear edge stitching, and in position capable of being adjusted for guiding the fabric at any point within the field represented by the dotted lines 6, f, g, 7b; but when the adjustment of the member ais limited to a line transverse to the line of seam formation and intersecting the line of needle actuation, said member can be adjusted back from the needle to the limit of movement permitted by the slot 9, and these conditions of adjustment are true when the member a is adjusted forward or toward the line of needle actuation the distance indicated by the dotted line 7". i
In Fig. 2 the member a is shown at its limit of adjustment toward and at the rear of the needle, as when employed in connec tion with a binding attachment for guiding the bound edge of the fabric.
In Fig. 3 the member a; is shown at its limit of adjustmentto-ward and in front of the needle, as whenused for edge stitching mens collars and cuffs.
From the foregoing it is to be understood that any one of the guiding members a, 7), 0, cl, is capable of adjustment at right angles to and parallel with the seam the distance indicated by the lines 6, h and f, g, or at any point within the field represented by such dotted lines, such range of. adjustment being made possible by loosely mounting the frame 4 on the cap 8, in connection with the slot 9 extending across the axis of said cap.
Claims 1. An edge-guiding device for sewing inachines comprising a guide-frame provided with an edge-guide and a circularly arranged inclined wall, a cap provided with integrally formed flanges mounted. on said frame, said cap being held in effective relationship with said frame by said flanges which are in sliding relationship with said inclined wall and provided with a slot extending across its axis, and means for securing said frame and cap in their desired relationship.
2. An edge-guiding device for sewing machines comprising a guide-frame provided with multiple edge-guides whose guiding surfaces are of different lengths and a circularly arranged inclined wall, a cap provided with integrally formed flanges mounted on said frame, said cap being held in ef- In testimony whereof, I have signed my fectlve relatlonshlp with sald frame by sultname to this specification, 1n the presence of able flanges havlng slldlng relationshlp with two subscribing wltnesses.
