The present invention is designed to provide a ventilating structure for shafts of such a form that there is accorded a direct draft through the ventilator owing to the minimum number of abstractive parts comprising and necessary to control the ventilator.
The essential advantages of my invention reside in the provision of a ventilator having a crown with a substantially continuous and concave internal area practically unobstructed in its expanse and thereby tending to create a positive and full draft across the top of the ventilator shaft.
Furthermore, my invention consists in the provision of a crown element which is normally maintained in operative position, but is efiective upon release of its operating levers, automatic or otherwise, to drop by its own weight into position to close the ventilating shaft. More explicitly, my invention resides in the provision of a means for at all times precluding the entrance of air to the interior of the crown element by a directly horizontal passage and at all times positively causing an initial upward tendency of the draft accorded through such crown element, such regulation being effected by the provision of an encompassing ring element continually in an ascertained and definite relation with the remainder of the crown element and with the upper end of the ventilating shaft.

The preferred embodiment of my invention is shown in'the accompanying drawlngs, in which similar characters of reference designate corresponding parts, and in which- Figure 1 is aside elevation of my improved ventilator structure adapted to be applied to the ventilatingpipe,fand, Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken through the structure shown in Fig. 1.
In this structure shown in the drawings, the ventilatingstructure' takes theform of a shaft element lpreferably of cylindrical form, having an external upwardly flared seat ring2 maintained upon the shaft element and in rigid relation thereto, by braces 3 and provided at intervals with drainage ports A: desirably arranged at or near the base thereof. This shaft element is further provided with inwardly extending lever supporting brackets 5 desirably disposed in radial arrangement upon the said element and constructed for thepivotal support of levers 6 having their lower ends converging and connected by links 7 joining at a ring 8 to which is connected a controlling cord or chain 9. The upper ends of these levers 6 are provided with pins 10 fora purpose to be hereinafter described.
The crown element; comprises a cap 11 having its inner surface of concave form and carrying upon such inner surface a series of radial brackets 12 which are slotted as at 13 for the reception of the said pins 10. The outer edge of the cap 11 is desirably curved to annular form as at 1 1 and this 1 annular ring 14: is concentric with the outermost edge 15 of the flared seat ring 2. At

11 there are provided strips 16 having U-shaped extensions 17 which embrace the flared seat ring 2 in loose relation thereto and serve to limit movement of the said cap 11 in an upward direction with relation to the seat ring. The bases of these U-shaped extensions 17 are connected to a cylindrical ring 18 desirably having its upper and lower edges inwardly bent as at 19 and 20 and of such a depth that the space between the cap and the seat ring in the elevated position of the cap, is inclosed thereby, thus precluding any possible direct draft.
It will be seen from the structure shown and described that l have provided a ventilator comprising a cap element which has an internal area of'concave form and which has an operating mechanism providing a minimum number of abstractive parts commensurate With surety of operation. In this connection it may benoted that the levers 6 are mounted edge-wise upon their bracket, which further tends to an unobstructive ventilating action. It will further be seen that I have provided a structure wherein no external weights need be employed, but the closing operation is incidentally efi'ected upon release of the controlling levers by gravity movement of the crown element. In conjunction withthis, it may be noted that there is provided a seating ring of simple form, which likewise constitutes a drainage element owing to the drainage ports therein. Also, the parts are limited in their relative movement in a manner to insure most perfect draft possible of attainment.
What I claim, is- 1. A ventilator comprising a shaft, element, an upwardly movable crown element,
operating levers for elevating said crown element, and a set of brackets 011 each of said crown and shaft elements, said levers having a pin and slot connection with the brackets on one of said elements and having a positive pivotal connection with the other HARRY C. HAMES.
