To all whom z't'mag/ concern.'
Be it known that I, ANDRES L'. FRosTERUs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Eureka, in the county of Humboldt and State of California, have invented' new and useful Improvements in `Grages for Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a specica-y tion.
This invention relates to sewingmachine attachments, and in particular to a gage or guide which is adapted to be connected with the presser-foot bar of the machine for use in guiding theV cloth ,while stitching lines a predetermined distance from and parallel to a given line, the primary object being to provide -a device of thischaracter which issimple in construction, which may be readilyv and securely applied to the presser-foot arm and as readily detached therefrom, andwhich may be adjusted toaccommodate the same to the various conditions of usa e in hemming and stitchingplalits and tuc s.
` The'mvention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement .25
of parts, hereinafter fully described and fclaimed, referenc e beinghadto the accomf panying drawing, jin whichi use in hemmm'g a piece'ofcloth; and, Fig. 2
is a. fragmentary front-elevation of the same,
. -showing the gage arm set forvuse institch- 85,. v the presser-foot arm of a sewing machine, to which the U-shaped bod -2 ofthe attachment ing the line parallel to a tuck.
In the drawing, the numeral '1 designates is securedby the aid o the clamping screw 3. A lateral supporting arm 4 is formed upon the body 2 and is adapted Ato be disposed horizontally when th'e deviceis in use.
. front faceof the slidelblock 5 and is adapted to extend through the longitudinal slot 8 .provided in an adjustable guide arm 9 so -that the said arm maybe clamped securely against the front'faceof the slide block in l any of itsdiiferent adjustedpositions there'- on.` Arunner-shapedfffoot 10 is provided vupon thelower end of the guide arm and is this tuck will v fragmentary,Z perspective view. of the. head of adapted to'engage thestraight edge ofthe prece of. cloth or other article that is being 'stitched'in order that it may guide the cloth 1n proper relation to the needle in stitching a line parallel tothe said edge.
The use of the device in the above-stated connection,` is shown particularly in Fig. 1, wherein the guide arm is shown disposed substantially vertical. It is evident that the distance between parallel lines to be stitched and the edge of the cloth, or any other guidin surface thereof, may be determined by adjusting the slide 5 longitudinally upon the supporting arm 4 or angularly thereon. In Fig. 2, however, the guide arm isvshown set at an angle for another purpose, which is to stitch a line parallel to a tuck or the like, wherein the cloth is stitched so as to form a bulging, tubular rib, such as is indicated by the numeral 11. The line ofl stitching of present the only true guiding surface, so it is desirable that the active edge of the guide-foot should bear against this line-of stitching rather than that the side face of the foot should bear Vagainst the yieldable body 11 of the tuck. By setting the guide armat such an angle, the active edge of the foot will extend in under the body -of the tuck and thus properly contact with the true guiding surface presented by .the line of stitching.
What is claimedis: l
1. Inan attachment for sewing machines, the' combination with a presser-foot arm, of a gage device comprising a body adapted to be attached to the said arm, a lateral supporting arm provided upon said body, a slide block mounted upon the said supporting arm for longitudinal slidingl and rotary movement thereon, means for securing said block in adjusted position upon the said arm, a guide arm pivotally mounted upon the slide block for movement `in a plane parallel to the axis of the supporting arm, a foot provided upon said 'guide arm, and means for securing the guide arm in adjusted position upon the slide block.
2. In an attachment for sewing machines, the combinationwith a presser-foot arm, of
fa gage device comprising a body adapted to e attached to the said arm, a` lateral supporting arm providing upon said body, al slide block mounted upon saidvsupporting' arm for longitudinal sliding and rotary movement thereon, means for securing said l parallel to ythe axis of the supporting arm,
In testimon whereof I aiX myI signature in presence o two Witnesses.
