in close compass for. storage or transportation, and which when unfolded for use will be strongly and rigidly braced.
1 The invention consists of the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts herein fully described and claimed,
reference being had to the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a rear elevation of a klte embodying my invention, showing the same as arranged for use. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4.- is a view showing a kite folded for storage or transportation. Fig. 5 is a vertical transverse section through the folded kite.
In carrying my invention into practice, I
provide a kite body 1, composed of any suitable flexible material, such as cloth, paper or the like, and which may be of any of the conventional forms or any desired and suitable form. This body 1 is provided with bellows portions or folds 2, which are adapted to fold in parallel relation along deterv mined fold lines 8.
The rear face of the body 1 is provided with a pair of bracing strips 4, suitaby secured thereto and arranged on opposite sides of the longitudinal center of said body between certain of the fold lines, the arrangement being such that when desired the body may be collapsed or folded in the manner illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5, the folds carrying the bracing strips 4 belng arranged tooccupy a position in the folded body between the central and side folds.
For the purpose of holding the body rigidly in open or extendedv position, I provide fastening or bracing arms 5 and 6, which are pivotally connected at their outer ends, as indicated at 7, to the sides of the kite body and are adapted to be extended transversely across the rear face of said body and against the strips 4 and tooverlap at their inner or free ends. The arm 5 is adapted to abut when in fully open position against a stop pin 8 carried by one of the bracing members and is provided with a headed pin or stud 9 for interlocking engagement with the free end of the arm 6, which is formed with a lateral slot 10 to receive the stud. Attached to the lower end of the body is the usual tail string 11 and suitably attached to the front face of the body are leading strings 12 connected with the controlling cord or rope 13.
It will be evident from the foregoing description that when the kite is unfolded and held in unfolded position by the latch arms 5 and 6, that the kite will be securely held braced in extended condition. By however releasing the arms 5 and 6 from locking engagement and swinging the same downward to a parallel position in parallel relation to the side folds to which they are attached, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1, the body may be folded or collapsed upon itself in the manner shown in Figs. 4 and 5. In this condition the parts of the body may be secured by means of the controlling cord, allowing it to be conveniently carried or packed away for storage or transportation.
I claim 1. A kite comprising a body adapted to fold bellows fashion, longitudinal bracing strips upon the body between the lines of fold, and bracing arms hinged at the sides of the body and adapted to be extended across said strips to interlock with each other at a point between said strips to hold the body extended.
2. A kite comprising a body adapted to fold bellows fashion, reinforcing members upon the body, and fastening members carried by the body and adapted to engage said reinforcing members to interlock with each other, whereby to hold the body extended.
3. A kite comprising a body adapted to B11118 PATENT 111-1ea fold bellows fashion on longitudinal parallel gagement at their inner ends, whereby to lines, bracing strips secured to the body behold the body rigidly extended and braced. tween the center and side portions thereof, In testimony whereof I afix my signature and arms hinged at their-outer ends to the in-presenoe of two witnesses. 7 sidemportions of the body for a folding I WINFIELD SCOTT BAKER. movement parallel therewith, said arms-bew-VVitnessesf ing adapted for extension across the body WIn I WLWABIIW,
and reinforcing strips for interlocking en- JAMES DEVINE.
Popies of this patent may be obtained 1513i centse'ach, by add ressing the Commissioner of Itatents, Y I "Washington, D10.
