KITE.
Speciiication of Letters Patent. i
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FERDINAND LIscHTIAK, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at Eggenberg, near Gratz, Austria-Hungary, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Kites, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to foldable kites and the same is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which similar reference letters denote corresponding parts and in which-' Figure 1 is a front elevation showing the kite expanded and Fig. 2 shows the kite in folded position.
The kite consists of two flat bars a, a constituting wing bars, the opposite inner ends of which overlap and are pivotally joined to one another as at o.
Z), are two other flat bars, which constitute the body or tail bars and which in form of shears are arranged crosswise and pivotally connected to one another in the center at d. These bars Z), ZL' are each pivoted at one end, as at g, g to the opposite wing bars a, a. Lines f, f are attached to the bars a, a at their joint c, so as to extend to the right and left of the said joint downward or rearward and engage narrow recesses e, e provided in the opposite free ends of the bars b, b. At the points where the lines engage the said recesses, the lines are formed with knots L, h whereby the portions of the lines extending between the said recessed ends of the bars b, b and the inner ends of the bars a., a are held taut and the kite is held in expanded position. The portions of the lines which extend rearward or downward from the recessed portions e, e ofthe bars Z2, o may be tied togetherand serve for the attachment of the ballast.
Tightly secured as by pasting or otherwise to the bars a, a is a plane a', which may be cut in the shape of wings, having a tail portion j, which tail portion may be pasted by means of paper strips or otherwise to the lines f, f. The upper or rear surface of the plane and tail-may bear a drawing orv a print to make the kite resemble a natural 1rd. Fastened to the kite at the points g,
g are two short lines Z, Z of uniform length and fastened to the point d is a longer line m, these three lines being connected together in one point to form the balance.
A piece o of paper stuffed -with cotton or the like and bearing` a drawing or print representing the head of a natural bird, is secured to the plane z' by means of a piece p of cardboard or the like engaging a pocket Q provided on the rear or upper surface of the plane.
1n order to fold the kite, the lines or cords are disengaged from the recesses e, e of the bars .7), b, so that the same are slackened and when the bars b, b areturned to be folded together, the wing bars a, a will adopt the position indicated in Fig. 2.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a foldable kite, two wing bars having their inner ends crosswise overlapped and pivotally joined to one another, two body bars pivoted in form of shears and having their inner ends attached to the wing bars, lines attached to said wing bars and detachably engaging the outer or rear ends of the body bars, so as to hold the kite in expanded position and when released from said bars to allow of the folding thereof, and a plane stretched over and secured partly to said wing bars and partly to the nes.
2. A foldable kite having the shape of a bird, comprising two wing bars having their inner or opposite ends overlapped and pivotally joined to one another, tail or body bars pivoted crosswise to one another. and connected to the wing bars at one end, lines attached to said wing bars and engaged around the opposite free ends of the said body bars, aballast fastened to the end of the lines extending rearward or downward from the free ends of said wing bars, a plane having a tail portion and fastened tothe wing bars and lines, and lines forming the balance and secured to the bars.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
` FERDNAND LISCHTIAK. Witnesses:
ADA MARIA BERGER, AUGUsT FUGGER.
