Be it known that we, Ronnn'r E. FRAME and VQJLIAM H. DE GrnAFF, citizens of the United States, and residents of Michigan freight, and adapted to discharge the load through the bottom of the car. A
The object of the invention is to provide improved means for controlling the hopper doors, whereby there is obtained simplicity of construction, ease of operation, and a securefastening for the door. 1.

The invention is herein shown and dcscribod as applied to a car in which the discharge doors are disposed transversely of the car, though it may be applied to a car in which the doors are differently disposed.
One of the discharge doors is represented at i5, and is shown as hinged at 16, 17, to an angle-bar 18, mounted on the longitudinal sills of the car, the lower end of the door fitting against the lower end of the inclined bottom 12 of the car and the side walls, as 19, of the discharge hopper. A bar 20, here represented as in Z form, is-secured across the boil-om of the door 15 and may, as in icated in Figs. 2 and 3, extend across the car so as to tie together the doors at opposite sides of the center thereof, the companion door being indicated in detail at 21.
The door 15 and, when the-doors upon opposite sides of the center of the car are secured together as above indicated, the two doors at the corresponding end, of the car are controlled by means of a shaft 22, journaled at its outer end iii a casting 23, secured to a bracket 23 depending from the side sill 24, and at its inner end in brackets 25, 26, secured to the inner faces of the center sills 10, 11, through one or both of which the shaft may pass. The. outer end of the shaft 22 i squared, as shown at 27, for the application thereto of a suitable crank by means of which it may be turned.-
Fixed upon the shaft 22 between the. ter sills is a crank arm 28, here represented as bifurcated and as having at its outer end a longitudinally disposed slot 29 for receiv ing a pin 30, fixed in a link 31, which. is preferably in the form of a rigid continuousbar, as illustrated, and the ,opposite end of which is pivotally secured to the bar 20, as shown at 32. For the purpose of adjustably attaching the link bar tov the'bar 20 an eyebolt 33 is passed thropghthelatter, and a reinforcing bracket 34,attached: thereto,.the outer end of the bolt 33being threadedas shown at 35, and being provided with anus 36 by means of which the 'bolt'may. be .justed Within the bar and bracket, a loat and backwardly inclinedifianges, as most plainly shown at 38. in Fig; 4 The pinIiQ is prolonged at both ends for engagingithi flanges 38 when the door 16 is closedzi, The link 31 is preferably bent, assh'ownavm' so that when it makes contact-with the hub 40'of the arm 28 the pin 30 will past;,the center of the shaft 22, thus bringing the line of stress from the point of attachment of the link bar to the door upon the pin 30 below this shaft to prevent it from tending to carry the pin 1 3O upwardly along the flanges 38. The aperture the crank arm 28 for receiving the pin 30' being elongated, the crank'arm is relieved ofgthe duty of sustaining the door in its closediposition, substantially all of the load being carried by the flanges 38. By this arrangement 'ro'vided' at their the shaft 22 may be turned without being called upon to draw the door more closely against the frame with which it cooperates.
For the purpose of insuring the tight closing of the door in first assembling the parts, or for the purpose of taking up any wear, the adjustment of the eye-bolt 33 as already described is provided, this adjusting means rendering it possible to bring th pin 30 into proper engagement with the per, a hinged door for closing the discharge end of the hopper", a crank' shaft, a linkconnecting the door and the crank of the shaft, and a fixed shoulder engageable by the pivot uniting the link and crank, when the door is closed.-

In a dump car, in combination, a pair of center sills spaced apart, a pair of hoppers located on opposite sides of the center 'sills u door for closing the discharge vopening of each hopper, such doors being rigidly united, a crank shaft disposed transversely with reference to the car andhavi'ng of each hopper, such doors being rigsills and being longitudinally slotted, a pair of plates attached one to the inner face of eachof the sills, each plate having a shoulder facing backwardly with reference to the doors and'being downwardly inclined, and a link connecting the crank arm with the'doors, such connection being by means of a: pin fixed in the link and engaging the slot in the crank arm and the shoulders of the plates. r

pair of plates attached one to the inner face of each of the sills, each plate having a shoulder. facing backwardly with reference to the doors and being downwnrdl, in; clined, and a link connecting the cran arm with the doors, such connection being by means of a pin fixed in the link and engaging the 'slotin the crank arm and the shoulders of the plates, the crank armbeing so disposed that in the final clos'rn movement of the doors the pin is carrie beyond a line passing through the crank arm and the point of attachment of the link to the doors.

In a dump car, in combination, a hopper, a hinged door for closing the discharge end ofthe hopper, a crankshaft, a link connecting the door and the crankshaft, the pivot uniting the crank and link projecting laterally beyond the parts united, and a pair of fixed shoulders engageable b the ends'of such pivot when the door. is c osed.
