Be it known that I, FRANCIS E. STEVEN- soN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Gilead, in the county of Morrow and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Regulators for Hydraulic Steam-Pumps, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide asimple compact and automatic means for controlling hydraulic 7 Steam pumps and;
especially pumpsof this class which operate intermittently. According to my invention '1 provide a governor or regulator which cuts ofi the steam supply to the pump "whena* predetermined maximum pressure is reachedthereby effectually preventing damageto the pump, presses, press fittings, etc.,
and which regulates the speed of the pump to any number of strokes for which it may be adjusted, thus preventing damage from racing if the pressure'should suddenly be released.
-In carrying out my invention I provide a governoror regulator having a valve chamber formed with steam inlet and outlet ports controlled by two hollow piston valves in line with each other within said chamber. One of these valves controlling the steam admission port is attached to a piston rod which extends into a hydraulic pressure chamber. connected withthe hydraulic pump whichextend through arms projecting laterally from the pistonrod and these rods carry adjusting nuts on opposite sides of said arms so that the distance between the yoke on the valve-stem and the arms on the piston rod may be adjusted. The rods just referred to,
which I call strain rods, extend through arms of the regulator frame and are connected at their outer ends by ayoke or spring cap between which and the frame is interposed a spring whichtends to hold the'outlet valve of the valve chamber fully closed andthe inlet valve fully open. The outer ends of the strain rodsare threaded and carry adjusting nuts which bear on the adjacent yoke or spring cap and by means of which the tension of the spring may be adjusted to determine the' normalpositions of the valves. 7 By these devices the regulator may be adjusted to automatically control the admission of steam to the pump withoutv the slightest attention on the part of the operator, thefsteam supply to the pump being Patented Sept. 22, 1914.
automatically cut off when a predetermined maximum pressure is reached and the speed of the pump being regulated to any desired number of strokes as conditions may'require.
Other features of my invention are hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 shows a top plan view of my improved regulator. Fig. 2 shows a vertical central section thereof. Fig. 8 is a detail view showing how one of the strain rods is connected wit other "parts of the mechanism.
The regulator is applied to the hydraulic steam pump in" the usual way and is connected with a suitable'source for supplying steam. The valve casing A is provided with a steam inlet B and a steam outlet B which latter leads to the steam chest of the steam pump in the usual way.

It will be observed that the valves are within the same valve chamber but are close together and are in line with each otherfa small space a only being leftbetween them. This is a compact arrangement and one that is serviceable in practice.
The valve E is attached to a piston rod F which extends through suitable packing fin the valve casing and also through packing f in the. casing of the pressure chamber G. Preferably the rod F is'made in two parts and its length, may b'eadjusted as hereafter described. The pressure chamber is connected to a pipe H which should lead to the discharge of the hydraulic pump or to the hydraulic pressure line. The casing of the pressure cylinder G is formed with arms 9 bolted at g to the arms 0 of the frame C and thus made rigid therewith. The valve E has a stem I passing through suitable packing K and also passing freely through a yoke L. The valve stem is threaded as shown and carries on opposite sides of the yoke threaded hand wheels N, M, by
means of which the normal position of the valve E within the valve casing may be ad- .F. The member g of the rod F is formed with a collar g which bears against the yoke Q and the other member 3 of the rod F carries an adjustable nut y The opening through the yoke Q is threaded as shown and by means of the devices mentioned the lengthof the rod F may be suitably adjusted. The strain rods carry adjusting nuts on opposite sides of the yoke Q and the shoulders q of the enlarged portions of the strain rods normally bear against the arms 0 of the frame (I and those portions of the rods beyond the shoulders extend freely through openings in said arms 0, g and are connected at their outer ends by a yoke or spring cap R between which and the pressure chamber is interposed a spring. S. The threaded outer ends of the strain rods extend freely through holes in the yoke or spring cap R and carry on their outer ends adjustable nuts 1", r.- The'pipe H extends freely. through an openingr in the yoke B. This construction is very compact and all the forces required to move the valves are in line with the valves themselves thus avoiding all side strains, and no tools are required for adjusting the valves to accommodate different speeds.
It will be observed that there are two sets of ports-controlled by two valves and that when the hydraulic pressure increases, the piston valves governing these ports are suitably changed. Each of the piston valves may be adjusted independently of the other and when the adjustment is made for speed at low pressure there is no danger of disturbing the adjustment at the opposite end ofthe governor.
I In this apparatus when the hydraulic pressure is low the valve D is fully open and if the valve E is adjusted fer high speed, the valve E is also fully open. As the pressure increases the valve D is gradually closed. If the speed of the pump increases on account of decrease of pressure the valve E is gradually closed. When the piston F is moved by" an increase or decrease-1n hydraulic pressure, a corresponding movement is always given to the valve D, and
as said piston rod F is connected with the strain rods 0 and P as beforedescribed, such strain rods move correspondingly Wltll said rod F and impart a corresponding movement to the valve E, at the same time, by the devices beforedescribed, the valves D and E may be independently adjusted.
It will thus be understood that the governor entirely cuts off the steam' supply to the pump when a predetermined pressure is reached and regulates the speed of the pump to any desired extent. Then there.

and the .wheel M should be drawn up against the yoke L. To decrease. the speed,- the wheel M should be loosened and the wheel N should be drawn up against the yoke tightly. When the speed has been properly adjusted the pressure may will operate in the manner before described.
I claim as my invention: 1. A regulator for hydraulic steam pumps, comprising a valve chamber havmg inlet 9o To increase the speed of the pump the. hand wheels Maud N should be loosened and outlet ports for steam, two independently adjustable, piston valves therein con trolling the inlet and outlet ports of the valve chamber and which are in line with each other, an adjustable spring connected with said valves for holding them in a predetermined position to obtain av definite pressure in the hydraulic apparatus with which the regulator is connected, a piston connected with the inlet valve and connected also with the hydraulic apparatus for moving said inlet valve to close the inlet opening to the valve chamber, and adjustable connections between said piston and the outlet valve.
