GEORGE WILLIAMS, OF DUNDAS ONTARIO, CANADA.
COMBINED GOVERNOR AND VALVE-GEAR FOR VAPOR-ENGINES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. as, 1914.
Application filed November 22, 1913. Serial No. 802,572.
This invent-ion relates to combined gov ernor and valve gear for vapor engines and it is primarily designed with the object of furnishing a simple and effective governor and valve gear for gasoleue engines. 1 With this and other objects in view, as will more fully hereinafter appear, my invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts fully described hereinafter and more particularly pointed out by the appended claims.
My invention will be best understood from a consideration of the following detail de-' scription taken in conjunction with the attached sheets of drawings forming apart of this specification, and in which drawing Figure 1, is a side elevation of that part of avapor engine embodying my improvements, and Fig. 2, is an end view of the same looking tothe right hand of Fig. 1, and partly in section for the sake of clearness.
Similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate the same or corresponding parts in both figures of the drawings.
According to the form of my invention illustrated 1, designates the governor weight which is of any appropriate formation and it is fitted with the usual yoke 3, in the well known way.
41', is a pinion appropriately keyed by a key 5, to a sleeve 6, carried by a bushing 7, in the well known way. 8, is the half time gear wheel in mesh with the aforesaid pin. ion 4-. Q
9, is a headless screw screwed into the cam box 10, and having hooked thereto one end of a tension spring 11, the other end whereof is appropriately connected to an adjusting stud 12, fitted with an adjustin screw 13.
1 1, is a flat headed pin suitably adapted to cooperate with the push rod 15, and 16, is a lock-nut controlling the adjustment of the adjusting stud 17, in opposition to the spring 18. a
19, is the governor dog fulcrum pin.
20, is the timing lever. 21, is a hexagonal cap screw adapted for intermittent cooperation with the steel plate 22, secured on the governor dog 23. I
24, and :25, are respectively the upper and lower pump springs and said springs control the operation of the hand lever 26.
2'7, the pump connection gland and 28, the pump plunger.
29, is a grease cup for lubricating the pinion and half time gears.
The operation'of the device is as follows: Rotation of the one-half time gear 8, imparts rotation to pinion 4, and to the sleeve by which the weights 1, are carried. These weights being pivoted at 1 it follows that their inner ends will swing outwardly under the action of centrifugal force as the speed of the engine increases, and this will cause their tail extensions 2, to thrust against the end of the push-rod 15, to impart endwise movement to said rod. This in turn will rock the lever 30, upon its pivot 81, against the tension of spring 11, this in turn moves the governor do 23, into the path of movement of the member 21 which may be the exhaust valve-stem so that the exhaust valve is held open at all times when the speed of the engine is such as to cause the action above set forth.
From the foregoing description it will be readily seen that by my invention I provide an extremely simple and eflective combined governor and valve gear the operation whereof will be self evident to those skilled in the art to which it particularly appertains without further description or illustration. Furthermore it will be seen that the invention contains every adjustment for the entire engine, in fact it is the entire engine. There are the governor, the igniter, theball bearing cams, including the cams and gears. Note also the consolidation of the vital parts of the engine arranged in such a way that they are contained in a box about twelve inches in diameter. The cam box can be removed by taking out four studbolts; the box can then be shipped repaired or adj sted, tried out on an engine and returned in perfect order. When bolted to the engine again, the engine is perfectly adjusted and will give entire satisfaction. The governor lever is ball bearing at each end, thus eliminating friction and guaranteeing a sensitive governor. The governor also is housed protecting it absolutely from dust ice, and accident. There is not one delicate or weak part in the entire engine, nor is there a single mechanical movement left out which is necessary to develop power economically and continually. It is an entire engine with all unnecessary parts elimiters Patent, is Y 1. The combination with an engine casing having the usual halftime geartherein, a detachable casing secured to the engine casing said detachable casing carrying a bearing, a sleeve mounted in said bearing, pinions for rotating said sleeve and meshing with said half time gear, a pin extending through said sleeve, centrifugally actuated Weights for imparting endwise movement to said pin through said sleeve, a valve controlling lever actuated by said pin;
2. The combination with an engine casing having the usual half time gear therein, a detachable casing secured to the engine casing said detachable casing carrying a bearing, a sleeve mounted in said hearing, pinions for rotating said sleeve and meshing with said half time gear, a in extending through said sleeve, centrifugally actuated weights for imparting endwise movement to said pin through said sleeve, a valve controlling lever actuated by said pin, saidlever being pivoted to the last named casing whereby said sleeve, pinion, pin, and
lever, are bodily removable with said casing.
3. The combination with a main engine casing having a gear wheel located therein, said gear wheel belng driven from the en- 1 gine shaft, of 'an auxiliary movable casing secured to the exterior face of the first named casing, said first named casing having an 10pening formed in the wall thereof over fwhich the auxiliary casing fits, saidauxillary casing having a bearing, a sleeve mounted to rotate in said bearing, a plmon mounted upon said sleeve to impart rotation'there- 1 to, said pinion "meshing with said gearwheel,
a pin endwise movable in said sleeve, centrifugally actuated weights pivoted to said sleeve and carrying portions which bear against the end of said pin, the opposite end of said pin bearing against a valve controlling lever pivotally mounted insaid. casing and spring means for controlling said lever and against the tension of which said pin acts, said spring means, said valve controlling lever, sleeve, and pinion belng all bodily removable with said auxiliary casing substantially as shown and described.
