Application filed December 20,1912. Serial Nel 807,972.
Be it known that we, BERTnAM C. SMITH and WILLIAM J. STEVENSON, citizens of the United States, residing at Groveton, 1n the A in place,"thestructure will be given a fin county of Trinity and Stateof Texas, have lshedtappearance, without the aid of the "services of a'skilled mechanic. The depend ing flange 6 acts as a deflector, tending to return toward thevault or hopper, moisture or the like, accumulatingon the under surface of the plate 3.
The head 5 is received in therecess 8 of the lid 7, the outer wall 10 of the recess en gaging the periphery of the bead and the inner wall 9 0 t e recess cooperating with the flange 6 of the bead. In this manner, the lid will be held in place, the knob 11 constituting a means whereby the lid may be opened.
The plate 3 and the lid 7 preferably are fashioned from metal or from some other substance which is impervious to moisture, and these parts if desired may be coated with porcelain. y
It will be obvious that the structure above 30 described presents a privy seat which may be maintained in a cleanly and sanitary condition, the construction being such that the device may be mounted in place by a person who is not a skilled mechanic. The struc- 5 ture, further, may be employed for reducing the size of an existing opening in a privy seat.
If desired, the lid 7 may be connected with the plate 3 through the instrumentality of a hinge 25 of any desired construction.
Considered briefly, the structure herein disclosed comprises a plate 3 having an opening, the plate being struck upwardly around the periphery of the opening to form 5 which the follow ng is a specification- The clevic'eforming the subject matter of this application is a privy seat and one object of the invention is to provide a seat of this type which may be kept in a sanitary condition.
Another object of the invention is to provide a privy seat which may be fashioned at trifling expense and be applied without the It is within the scope of the invention to improve generally and to enhance the utility of, devices of that type to which the present invention appertains.
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
the accompanying drawings :-Figure 1 is a top plan; Fig. 2 is a bottom plan; Fig. 3 is a cross section; Fig. 4 is a detail enlarged from Fig. 3.
In the accompanying drawings the numeral 1 indicates a support which may be a board, the same having a hole 2.
T e invention further includes a plate 3 of any desired form, the same in the present instance being shown as rectangular and being provided adjacent its corners with openings 3 adapted to receive screws or nails 3 whereby the plate 3 maybe as sembled with the support 1. In the plate 3 there is formed a hole 4 and around the periphery of this hole the plate 3 is struck upwardly to form an upstanding bead 5 of inverted trough shape, the same including a depending flange 6.
he invention further includes a lid "7 struck upwardly around its edge to form a recess 8, the inner wall of which is denoted by the numeral 9 and the outer wall of which is denoted by the numeral 10. The central portion of the lid 7 is struck upwardly to form a knob 11.
edge of which forms a downwardly extending flange 6; anda lid 7 the periphery of which is formed into an S-shaped bead, the outer portion of which forms a troughshaped recess 8 receiving the bead 5 on the plate 3, the inner portion of which forms a and engaging the flange 6, the flange 6 extending below the rib 50. Moisture accumulating on the under surface of the plate 3 cannot pass laterally between the parts 8 and 5, or onto the under face of the lid 7, because the moisture is intercepted by the flange 6. Moisture accumulating on the under surface of the lid 7 cannot pass laterally between theparts 5 and 8, owing to the 2 1 Q presence of the rib 50. All of the moisture forms a trough-shaped recess receiving the 15 therefore, will be directed downwardly and head on the late, the inner portiomof; which the upper surface of the part 5 will remain forms a rib depending below the body of the l ry. lid and engaging the flange, the flange ex- 5 Having thus described the invention, tended below the rib. y
