I, JAMES Amarina Minnironnnnn, of Mount Savf age, county ofAlleghany,A State Vof Maryland, ,have invented an Improved Brick-Press, 'of which the fol- Figure 2, a plan view of the same; Figure 3, a transverses'ection on the line 1 2, iig. 2, showing the cam-sharia; and 'Y vFigures 4, 5, and (i, sheet 2, are long-itudinalseetions on the line'3 4, fie.' 2, showing the successive foperat-ions of the several parte ofthe machine.
Gene/ral Description'. Tho-hed-plate or fraine A of the machine may be of any suitable forni' and eoiistructieii. In the present instance it consists of a siiigle bott-like"casting, rounded 'at theV corners, and having anges a and a" at both 'its npperand lower edges,v y To this iframe aresecuied hearings or standards the, driving-shaft B,4 the latter' e c, in .which turns having at `pue end a driving-pulley, d, and at its opposite end'a toothed pinion, c, which'- gears into a' larger'cog-wheel, f, of' a cani-shaft', 0, which also i .turns in'snitable bearings4 on the franieof'the ma ,chine. l
,lhe-.mold-box F is-secured to one end of the` frame, andhas' longitudinal opening .or passage, 7i., extending entirely through-it, in which `is arranged to sldea solid plunger, G, and'withwhih coinniunic-etes). vertical opening, @,-formed in the lid or cap gofthehox.;v n A transverscmietal bar or cross-face, J, is arranged lo slide between the outer end .of the boa 'F and guides 7c 16;" secured tothe saine, thesa-d erjoss-face,
coverigfthe end of the inold' or passage 1i., while,
lwhen atftlie limiti ofitsdownward movement, it
forms, with its'upper cdge,a continuation-of the hot- 'The' plunger @above referred to, is; operated by two camsjland K', placed side by side upon the' camshaft, and operating alteinateliy-upoii-the faces i and l' of a yoke, M, which is fixed tn or fiorins part of tlie-.pl'iingeirod M', the-latter -sliding through and being steadied atits rear end `by a guide, in, ofi
-the frame. y
Y -The cross-face J is hung, to and operated by two vibrating' rods or levers l" P, which are slotted so -asto have a limited `sliding motion upon their ful,-
crums n u, at the opposite sides of the mold-box.
' These lvibrating levers have secured to or. are 'formed at their'inner eiidsiiito yokes Q Q, which are operated by double cains lt It, on the cam-shaft.,
the l portion s -of eacheani acting upon'y the faces t t of its yoke, and the port-ion s' upon. a lng, t, which projects from one side ofthe bottoni of each yoke.
The operation of the machine is as follows:
A roughly-molded brick, or a mass of clay or other material lfrom which a brick-is `to be niade is dropped through thev opniugi into the space. h, in front ot ,the plairgei'-,A when the latter and the several parts of the press are in the-position shown in figs. l and 4, the cam-shaft turning in thev direction indicated by the arrows.
The rounded portion of the cani 'l-,firststrikes and -turnsrupon the face l of the yokem, thus 'gradually `moving the` plunger forward to the position. shown iniig. 5, and 'compressing the brick .between the saine and the crossd'zice J, which is drawn up tightly against the end ofthe mold-box by. the Aaction oi' the portions s of the double nains llagaiiist the rear faces t1 of vthe' yokes Q.
After the brick has been thus compressed instiic mold, the cani K, although continuing to turn, ceases for an instant to act upon thefa'ce l. of the yoke, and
the plunger remains stationary, the double o ainsR turning in the meantinieto the position sh'ow'n in y fig. V5, and continuing to more until their portions s have passed over theyln'gs 1? oft-he yokes.
-' When this has occurred,4 the vibrating ro'ds P will, partly owing vto 4the weight of the cross-face J and part-ly to an upward hlow given the yokes bythe portions x of the Ydouble cains, ftiiin upon their fuln crums to the inclined' position Ishown in g; 6, or u ntil the cross-face J` rests upon the foot o of the mold-box, with its upper edge ilusli with the bottom of the mold. i
n As s oon-asutliecross-face has been thus depressed the cam K will again commence to act npon'its yoke, and the plunger will he moved forward, as
shown in iig. 6, untilt has pushed thebi'iek entirely out'of the;A mold and onto the upper edge of the crossface. Y y i On the motion being continued, tlieleani K will strike the rear face t1 of the yoke on, and will draw the'plunger back to its `original positioiniig. 4, and
bricks, and building or other material.
:it the same Vtime the -cross-iee'irili also .be raised mid-returned to its original position by 'h'e action of 'rho portions s of the double cams upon the. face t of the yokes Q.
The brick resting,r4 upon the iop of the cross-face,-` when thnsrnisedwvith vthe sume, can either be removed by-,im11d,'or may remain upon 'the cross-piede -during another operation of the nmehine, untiLit is pnshcd'o" by Jnhe next succeeding brick ontoa. travcling table or belt. V
The. above-described machine,V although intended principally lfor compressing roughly-molded bricks of' I clay, can, itwiil Je evident, be .used for making fire-4 biocks, of lany suitzibie l y I Claims. i l l1. The vibrating and Y sliding rodsy or levers'P, operating as described, in combination with the' crossface J and o )eratinlr mechanism' as :md for the )url i o r pose seb forth.
' 2. The yokes Q Q, nt the inner ends of'v the said vibrating rods or immers, in combination with the double cams Teli.,k for operating upon the yokes, 'vibe' stntiniiy in the manner described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name-'to this specification in the presence of swo subscribing witnesses.
