On'the twosides of the door are mounted casings19 and 20 wherein Aare pivotally mountedthe handle levers' 2 1 and 22. The former v'member is pivotally mounted in the bottom .of plate 19` and` normally rests against plate 30-While the latter is pivotally mounted in the top plate 20 and normally rests against the outer wall of this plate. :Thus handle 21 may be pulled outwardly in which direction the door swings while the handle 22 must be pushed inwardly also in the direction of the door swing.- These two plates are clamped together by meansoi a special screw 23, which passes through a slotted opening in plate 19 and engages a pro-vided with a slotted 'opening 25 intermediate its length, the slot being dispo-sed in the plane of the slot in the head so that in erecting it may be positioned with the opening at right angles to the edge of the door 'and the nail 26 driven therethrough to prevent its removal.
Adjustmentv is provided for diierent widths of the doors by attaching the member 17 to the handle lever 21 through the medium of an eye bolt 27 in threaded engagement with one end oi the bolt 17, the eyeI portion being pivotally mounted in the handle lever as at 28. On the other end of 17 is provided a screw 29, the head of which I abuts aga-inst vthe inside of the handle lever 22. Thus. by adjusting the eye 27 and screw 29 various thicknesses 'of door may be accommodated and atthe same time member' 17 kept central in the tubular casing.
Attached to the entire surface of the casings 19 and 2O are plates 30 whereon is mounted the locking mechanisms. This mechanism consists of an irregularl shaped plate 31 pivotally mounted as at 32 held against outward movement by the head lof screw 33. On the lower1 end of plate 31 is formed a block 34, which is adapted to enter a notch 35 in the handle lever 2lv or between the screw head andend of 17 on the opposite side.' This plate is urged into these notchesby means of springs 36, and on the lower end is provided a notch 37 contacting with the rectangular key 38 on the lside of push button 39. This push button extends through openings in the outer casing and plate 30 and is held normally raised by a flat spring 40.
locked swings to a point opposite block 42. This block is provided with a number of corrugations 43 and an opening is provided in the plates 19 and 2O through which a key 44 may be inserted. This key is grooved to fit the corrugation of block 42 and the point beveled as shown at 45 so that when it contaets withthe arm 41 the latter will be de-h pressed `and plate 31 is moved to withdraw block 34 from the, path of spindle 17. The end 46 projects across the path of the key 38 when the door is locked and preventsthe bolt 39 from returning to its normal position. The handle levers are held in their normal position by a spring 47 coiled upon a pin 48 extending through the lower end of the handle lever 21 andhaving the free ends resting against plate 19 and in use when the handles are pulled or pushed against the action of this spring member 18 contacts with roller 13 and further movement pulls the link inwardly drawing the latch 5 from the opening in the plate 7.
To lock the device after the door is closed either of the buttons 39 is pressed iinvardly. This pushes the key 38 past the plate 31 allowing the springA 36 to move this plate toward the center of the mechanism bringing block 34 in the path of the sliding mechanism. It will be. apparent that if one or the other of the handle levers are prevented from moving the latch 5 can not be Withdrawn thus forming an effective lock. It will also be apparent that as the locking mechanisms on the two sides of the door are independent that when locked from one side it will be necessary to open it from that side, which makes this lock particularly applicable on the doors of hotel rooms. To unlock the key. is inserted through the opening and plate 4 2 and pushed against arm 41, which depresses the plate 31 draw- On one side of plate 31 is a projecting arm 41, which when the door isIk ing 34 from the notches and moving 46 past' the key 38 allowing spring 40to pull out the button 39.
