To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM S. DAVEN" Pour, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Bedford, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improve ments in Truing-Tool Holders for Grinding-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled .in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to devices for truing the grinding wheels of plain or universal grinding machines such as are used for grinding cylindrical surfaces, and in which the work is supported upon centers and rotated while the point of operation of the grinding wheel is transferred along the work by reciprocation of either the grinding wheel or the work support.
During the operation of machines of this character the surface of the grinding wheel frequently becomes glazed or untrue, so that it is necessary to cut away the surface of the wheel b meansof a diamond point or truing tool 1n orderthat' the wheel may operate properly 'upon the work. The devices which have heretofore been employed for holding or suppporting the truing tool have been so constructed and arranged that it has been necessary -;to either remove the work from the centers, readjust the machine so as to allow an increased travel of the work support past the wheel, or to move the wheel out of grinding relation with the work, and with certain constructions all'of these changes or adjustments must be made,
in order to true the grinding wheel. It is accordingly the object of-the pres.
ent invention to provide means for truing the grinding wheel without removing the work from the centers or materially changing the adjustment of the machine. In the simplest and most efiicient form of the invention which I have yet devised, however, the truing tool is secured in a carrier which.may be readilyswung into and out of working position without disturbing the work or the adjustment of the grinding wheel, and which is provided with an adjusting or operating device for regulating theaction of the tool upon the wheel.

The grinding wheel is mounted in a carriage 7 which is moved transversely to bring the grinding wheel into grinding relation to the work, and to feed the wheel forward as the grinding operation progresses. The parts thus far described may be of any well-known construction, and cooperate in the usual and wellknown manner to efi'ect the grinding.
The devices for truing the grinding wheel consist of a carrier 8 in whlch a diamond .tool 9 of the usual construction is -rigidly secured by a clamping screw 10. The tool carrier is mounted upon the work supporting table 4: in such manner that the tool may be readily brought into engagement-with the grinding wheel or ma be moved back out ofworking posltion. is shown, the carrier is pivoted at 11 to a base 12 which is secured upon the ways 18 by a clamping plate 14 and bolt 15. The base 12 is provided with an arm 16, and the tool carrier is provided with an adjusting screw 17 adapted'to engage the upper sideof' the arm when the carrier is swung into working position. During the grinding operation the tool carrier is swing back into the position indicated in full lines in Figs. 1 and 2 where it is out of working position. When it is desired to sharpen or true the grinding wheel the tool carrier is swung forward into the posi-. tion indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2. While it is preferred to employ the specific construction and arrangement of the parts shown and described, it will be understood that this construction is not essential, and may be varied and modified without departing from the broader scope of the invention.
Having explained the nature and object of the invention, and specifically described one construction in which it may be embodied, What I claim is I 1. A mechanism for truing the wheels of grinding machines, having, 1n combination, a grinding wheel support and work supporting table relatively movable to transfer the point of operation along the work, work carrying centers on the work table and a truing tool holder having provision for engaging the truing tool with the grinding wheel while the grinding wheel is in grinda grindln wheel support and work supporting ta le relatively movable to transfer the polnt of operation of the grinding wheel along the work, work carrylng centers on the work table, a-truing tool carrier mounted on the work table, and means for adjusting the tool to true the wheel while the wheel is in grinding relation to the work carried by the centers.
