FLOAT-VALVE FOR PUMPS.
Specificationof Letters Patent. Patefitedsept. 15, 1914.
Application filed. March 2, 1914. Serial No. 821,995.-
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JAMES B. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Howell, in the county of Vanderburg and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Float-Valve for Pumps, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in float valves for pumps, one object of the present invention, being the provision of a simple form of pump valve in which the parts are non-corrodible, thus permitting the same to be used in mines where acids and other corro-ding elements are removed through the suction pipes thereof.
A further object of the present invention, is the provision of a foot valve of a pump equipped with a float valve for controlling the inlet port of the foot valve, so that when the water has fallen to a predetermined level, no water or liquid will be permitted to flow through the foot valve port.
With the foregoing and other objects in View which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the'invention.
In the drawingsFigure 1 is a view in section of a foot valve with the present float valve in operable relation thereto. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan View thereof. Fig. 3 is a section on line 33 of Fig. 2 to show the connection of the float valve rod to the foot valve casing.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the suction and outlet pipe, whose lower end is fitted within the threaded socket 3 of the foot valve carrying casing 2. Thus the chamber 4 is provided at the lower end of the pipe 1 and within the casing 2 and from which leads the entrance port 5. A foot valve 6, of usual structure, composed preferably of leather and weighted to normally be closed, is mounted within the chamber 4. Disposed to strain the liquid before its entrance through the port 5 and attached to the under side of the casing 2 is a strainer 7 which is provided with an aperture 7 through which projects the rod 8 which carries at its outer free end the float 9. This rod 8 is composed preferably of wood or any non-corrodible material and carries upon the upper face at the inner end thereof, a strip 10 of flexible material, preferably leather. This leather strip is attached by the screws 11 as illustrated, and by means of the screws 13 and the projecting edges thereof, is attached to the under side of the casing 2 adjacent its forward edge so that the leather strip 10 constitutes a means for pivoting the float actuated rod 8 in place. when the liquid has fallen to a predetermined level, the strip 10 of leather will be moved upwardly and close the port 5.
In order to relieve the strain upon the leather strip 10. and form an additional fulcrum for the rod or lever 8, the bail 15 surrounds the same, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 3 and has its apertured end 16 attached by screws 17 to the forward face of the casing 2. Thus the bail 15 and the screws 13 maintain the float actuated lever 8 in the proper position.
What is claimed is:
1. The combination with a foot valve casing of a pump, of a float valve for controlling the inlet port thereof, including a lever, a flexible port closing strip carried upon the upper surface of the free end of the lever, means for attachingthe sametoi the foot valve casing to constitute the pivoting connection of the float actuated lever to the casing, and an auxiliary means sur rounding the float lever and attached to the foot valve casing for relieving the strain upon the flexible strip.
2. The combination with a foot valve casing of a pump, of a float valve therefor,
including a float actuated lever, a strip of flexible material attached to the upper surface of the free end thereof for movement to and from the port of the foot valve casing, said strip being of greater width than Thus the lever, fastenings for attaching the pro- In testimony that I claim the foregoing as jecting edges of the strip to the under side my own, I have hereto aflixed my signature of the foot valve casing and at the fulcrum in the presence of two Witnesses.
