Berit knownthat I, Jnssn M. GARLINGTON, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Ottawa, in the county of La Salle and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Matcl1Boxes, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to in'iproveinents in matchboxes and in particular to a pocket match box of generally rectangularform, constructed so as to be readily held and opened by the fingers of one hand,:and having combined therewith. a cigar cutter and cigar perforator.

One of the objects of my invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive article of this sort such as may be readily stamped and formed by automatic machinery.

Another object of my invention is to provide a box that can be held-in the palm of the operators hand and the lid readily opened by movement of the thumb of the same hand.

A further object of my invention is to provide a neat and attractive pocket match box having combined therewith a cigar cutter and a cigar perforator.

In the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved match box partially opened. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is an end elevation. Fig. t is a plan view of the base portion of my match box with the lid removed, parts being broken away. Fig. 5 is a fragmentary, vertical, sectional view taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 41, and Fig. 6 is a fragmentary, vertical, sectional view on the line 66 of Fig. 5.

In the drawings the numeral 1 indicates in general the base or body portion of the box comprising the bottom part 2 with its upturned ends 33, and upturned sides 4-4:.

The numeral 5 indicates in general the lid.

The base portion 1 of the box is of generally rectangular form, the depth being comparatively small, as compared with its length and width, so that the box may be well adapted for use as a vest pocket match box. A portion of one of the sides 1 near one end is cut away as at 6, so as to facilitate the grasping and removing of a match. The corners of the base portion, where the sides 44c join the bottom 2 are pressed inwardly to form elongated grooves 7 which are engaged by the inturned edges 8 of the downwardlyextending lips 9 of the lid The lips 9 extending downwardly from thelongitudinaltsidcs of the lid are bent to conform to the upturned sides 4.: of the base portion, and the inturned lower edges 8 coact ing with the grooves 7 securely holds the lid in slidable contact withthe top of the sides a: and ends 3 of the base section. One

end of the lid 5 is provided with a down-' of the lid except .by su'llicient ;pressureztospring. the lid up and away from the base section, such pressure being necessary only in assembling the box.

To facilitate the opening and closing of the box by a finger and thumb movement of the same hand which holds it I have provided a series of transverse corrugations 12 in the lid 5, and similar series 13 in the bottom 2. The box being held right side up in the palm of an operators hand it is evident that the thumb will naturally engage the corrugations 12 of the lid and thus readily move the same to open or close the box.

A hole or perforation is provided in the lid adjacent the end carrying the lug 10, lts edge being beveled downward, as at 15, to receive the tip of a cigar. The operation of forming the hole and its beveled edge is best performed by a punch having on its shank a conical shoulder, which after the perforation of the metal by the punch end, comes in contact with the metal around the hole squeezing it to the desired form. The pressure thus applied to the metal around the hole hardens and toughens it, thus pro.- viding an eflicient shank and durable out ting edge. The tip of a cigar being placed in the opening 1d and the lid closed, it is evident that the pressure of the end'of the base portion 3 against the tip will cause the sharp edge of the hole 14 to sever it from the body of the cigar, making a neat, clean cut.

I have also provided in the base portion of my box near one side a cigar perforator which comprises a flat strip 16, one end of which is formed into a round pin 17 extending through an opening 18 in the end wall adjacent the bottom 2. A finger button 19 has a shank 20 extending upward through a slot 21 in the bottom of the box. The

"the perforating pin is positioned at 'l bottom of the base section near one side that if the operator wishes to make an axial opening in the cigar, the partially open lid forms with one of its downwardly extending sides a stop or abutment against which to hold the cigar in making the periteration to insure its coaxial relation with the pin. Obviously a transverse perforation may be made when the lid is closed.

Whereas I have illustrated and described a single embodiment of my invention it is evident that various changes may be made without. departing from the spirit or scope thereof.

Having described my invention, what I claim is The combination with a box having a tray shaped base section and a lid, of grooves formed in the base section at the juncture of the sides with the bottom, and downwardly extending lips on the lid engaging with the said grooves, for sliding engagement therewith, one of the side walls near its end being; cut away substantially to the bottom of the base section to provide a finger recess.
