IMPROVEMENT IN BURGLAR-ALRMS. I

l', WILLIAM REYNOLDS, of Manchester, in the county ot' Hillsborough and State of New Hampshire, have invented cert-ain Improvements in Burglar- Alarms, of which the following is a spcciiication.v

M y invention relates to alarms to be used in buildings, and is operated by theV opening` ot` any door Aor window with which it is connected.

rlhe nature of my invention consists in so arranging the operative part-s that the hammer-arm rests directly upon the movable or supporting-rod, the displacement of whiehcauses the alarm toibc set in motion. i

I5 is a standard, to which the frame (in which is placed gearing similar to that used in ordinary alarmclocks) is secured;

a is a. shalt, on which is a cog-wheel, l), ratchetwheel, c, and a. flat coil-spring, d.

The outer end of this shaft is square, on which the key lits to wind up the spring d.

On the shaft c is a pinion and scape-wheel, f, and

overl it is another shaft, y, to the underside ot' which is attached an arm, g', and on each endy of it is -a pallet, which `operate on the teeth ot' thescape-wheel.

I a connecting-plate, which may be used' when it is desired to connect several wires or cords to' one spi-ino'. In it is a slot, through which passes a screw rlhe arm h is then raised, and the detachable rod F placed between itand the' sumiorting-post E.

When the arm his raised up in this position it holds one of the pallets on the arm y', between `two of the teeth ofthe scape-wheel j, thereby prevent-ing any movement ot the operative parts of the alarm.

llhe spring d can now be wound up and the alarm is set.

Should any door or window which is connected with` the alarm be opened, the detachable rod F is immediately thrown from its position ontop ofthe supporting-post E and from .under thc arm h, thus releasing thc scape-wheeland allows the spring (l to exert its power to' operate the cog-wheel on the shaft a, and it, the scape-wlieelj,t11c teeth of which strikingthe pallets on the arm y', give it and the arm ha vibratory motion, causing the .ball or hammer i to rapidly strike the gong D and 'sound analarm.

I do not claim supporting the hammer-arm 'by -means of a separate-arm or lever; but
