Application filed. September 17,1913. Sera1No..790,185. f f.
Be it known that I, DANIEL'WENTLAND, a
of North Dakota, have invented a new and useful Grang-Plow; and I do hereby declare f the following to be a full, clear, and `exact description of the` invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.l
This invention relates t a new and useful improved gang plow, more especially adapt- -ed for plowing sides of a steep hill or low mountain sides. t
One of the objects of `the invention 1s to provide a gang plow of'this nature comprising desirable and practical yfeatures of construction.
' 'One ofthe features ofthe invention is the -provision of means whereby two plows may be simultaneously lowered so that `the points thereof will enter the soil.
In practical iieldsthe ldetails ofconstructiony may necessitate alterations, to which the patentee is' entitled, provided thealteran tions fall `within the scope of what is claimed.
at 9 to the mold boards 10 ofthe plows 11.y
The invention comprises furtherv feature and combination of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings :-Figure 1 is a 'view showing` the plows raised. Fig.` 2 is a side elevation showing the plows lowered.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 designates a member .having at the rear a seat 2. Mounted in a bearing 3, `of the member 1 at its forward portion is the arch portion 3 of an axle 4. This axle is provided with, lateral stubs or portions 5, on which supportingwheels 6 are journaled. Mounted also on the members 1 are the beams 7 and 8 secured in place by the bolts 8a. The rear ends of the beams are secured The forward ends of the beams are connected by a transverse pin 12, lon which a clevis 13 is arranged, and to which clevi'sany suitable' evener (not shown) may be connected, vwhereby the apparatus may be drawn by draft animals.
Rising upwardly and extending forwardly in the member l is a rack 14 secured in place at 14a-,and braced bythe bar 20. Forming an integral part with the arch `3 `is a lever 15 havinga tooth 16, adaptedfor engage-- -ment with the rack to hold .the lever in adjusted positions. `Howeverwhen the wheels as shown in 1, the lever 15 rests upon the headed. lug 19, which prevents the lever from moving downwardly, and since the inherited sepaaf'ioia. p
" and the arch portion of the axle are disposed weight Lof the operator is upon the` member 1, and the arch portion von an angle as shown 1n Fig. 1, the lever 15 will press against the lug v19., so as to hold the wheels andthe lever in adjusted positions. The weight of the operator on the seat constitutes'means not only to coeact with the lug 19 to hold the sides yof the axle inclined downwardly and forwardly, but to co-act with the rack -and the tooth 16: on the lever to holdthe sides of the axle inclined rearwardly and downwardly, so that the plow is directed downwardly in the soil. "When the wheels are adjusted as shown in Fig. 2, the `tooth 16` engages one of .the teeth of ,therackk 14, 'which will hold the wheel and the lever in position. f fr i, f
Referring to Fig; 1, it will be seen that by moving the 'lever in the direction" of the arrow A18,*the wheels .may be thrown rearwardly. In this manner the ,forward por? tion of the" member 1 is lowered together rising from the rear portion, plowvqbeamsy includingk plows .rigidly fixed to diametrif cally opposite sidesy of said member, the upper face ofsaidmember at itsforward portion beingV provided with a bearing, anV
arched axle mounted in said bearing, the sides of the arch axle being diametrically opposite andv normally inclined downwardly andforwardly and provided with wheels, one side of the arch axle having a rearwardly extending lever, a lug projecting laterally of said member on which the lever engagesto hold the sides of the axle `normally inclined downwardly and forwardly,y a segmental rack rising from Saidmember, .said lever constituting means whereby the` "sides ofthe axle maybe inclined downwith the beams 7 and 8, thereby causing the wardly and rearwardly, `said lever 4having means to engagethe'rack toy assist in holding `the sides of the axle inclined-rearwardly and downwardly, the seat being so arranged relative to the member, ythe axle and the said plow beams, that the weight of the op'- erator on the seat constitutes means not only In testimony Whereofl have-*signed my naine tothis specification in the presence of two lsubscribing witnesses. 4

to co-tct with said lug to hold the sides of` the axle inclined downwardly andV forwardly, but to cofaot with the rack `and the means on the lever to hold the Sides of the axle inclined rearwardly and downwardly,l
so that the plow is directed downwardly in Copies of this patent may be obtained for ive cents each, bj' addressing the Commissioner of Iatents,
