PATENT I ALGERN ON GILLIAM, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN HARNESISQSADDLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1 50,969, dated January 17 1871.
4 -Toad whom} it may concern.-
ence being had to the annexed drawings, makip g a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction of a metallic, gutta-percha, or other suitable backing or cantle for harness-saddle seats separate and distinct from the seat itself, andforining no part thereof; and the same is applied'and used for a binding and flnishto the saddle, imparting additional strength thereto and easily removed for the purpose of repairing the saddle seat when deemed necessary.
Figure 1 represents a saddle seat with my improvement attached.
Fig. 2 represents a saddleseat with the backin or cant-1e detaehed. Fig. 3 represents a transverse or cross section through the center of the seat, showing the manner of fastening the backing or cantle to the seat and the flange upon the latter. Fig.
- 4 is a front'view of the backing or, cantlej Bin theseveral figures represents asaddleseat, made in the usual form.
E is the backing or cantle, which may be made of various kinds of metal, gutta-pereha, or other suit-ablematerial. It is made to conformin shape and configuration to the part of the saddle-seat to which it is attached, andhas e, which projects a formed upon it a flange,
short distance above the saddle-seat, making a neat and perfect finish to the saddle.-
A is a lug or dle-seat B, against which the backing or cantlerests, and secured thereto by means of a screw, 0, passing through the hole D into the lug A. By this arrangement the backing or cantle can at any time be removed withoutinjury to the saddleseat, admitting of easy re placement, and protects the edge of the leather covering of the saddle-seat.
My present invention I consider an improvement upon that described in Letters Patent granted me April 30, A. D. 1867, No. 64,214, as it may be constructed and made at much less expense, and with more rapidity. It avoids the necessity of any recurve, as is required in the patent referred to, and does not, consequently, cover or inclose any portion of the seat or its covering, but is simply a flanged bead proj ecting slightly above the seat of the saddle, making a neat finish thereto.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isy 1. The removable flanged backing or cantle for harness-saddles, constructed and arranged in the manner and for the purpose herein described.
, 2. The combination of the saddle-seat B with its lug A, formed upon the same, backing or cantle E, and screw 0, in the manner and for purpose herein described.
