Be it known that I, CARL ScIIALLEn; workniaster, citizen of the Duchy of Brunswick, Empire of Germany, residing at Brunswick, Germany, have inventedy certain new and useful Improvements in Calculating-Machines, of which the following is a specilication.
My invention relates to improvements in calculating machines, and more particularly iii calculating machines of that class, in which setting members in the forni of-keys are arranged in columns, the keys of each columiico-i'i )erating with a registering wheel which is a apted to be rotated by coiitrolling members when depressing a key of the column, the angle of rotation of the wheel corresponding to the value represented by the depressed key. I
The object of the improvements is to provide a machine of this class in which the mechanism for transmitting the movements of the keys to the registering mechanism is simple in construction and reliable in operation.
With this object in view myv invention Iconsists in constructing the said controlling members in such a way, that they are shifted inv the direction of the shaft of the regis tering wheels, and the shifted and nonsliifted members form positive guiding means for a. tooth associated with the registering Wheel for coupling the same to the driving mechanism.
For the purpose of explaining the invention an example embodying the same has been shown in the accompanying drawings, in which the same letters of reference have been used iiiall the views to indicate correspondingparts. f y

The cover plate is formed with slots 1 one for each ot' the stems l of the keys, and the stems are arranged in several longitudinal columns disposed one beside the other and each coinprising nine keys representing the numbers from l to 9. Each stem is formed at its side with teeth 3 the number of which corresponds to the value represented by each key, and which are disposed equd distances apart. At the sides of the 'keys of each column nine longitudinal bars il-are located, which are parallel to each other and have rocking supports on a vertical shaft The distance of the said bars is equal'to the pitch of the teeth formed 'on the' vertical key stems 1, and the operative faces of the teeth are beveled, so that when depressing in a column for example the key which represents the value nine al] the nine bars 4 are rocked sidewise, and when depressing the key cor responding to the value five only the Five upper bars are rocked sidewise. the bars 4 are returned into normal posi tions-by springs 6, and the keys are shifted upward and into normal positions by springs 7. -The -keys which are depressed are adapted to be locked in depressed positions by means of rocking bars 8 provided one for each column and having noses 82 'adapted to engage lateral shoulders 9 provided at the-lower ends of the stems, and in order to release the keys the said bars are rocked out of engagement with the said shoulders. Such rocking movement. may be imparted to the bars 8 by any suitable means such' for example asa. reset-ting key 48 provided one .for each column or one for all the columns, and which acts for example on the rock shafts 8 carrying the rocking bars 8. While `in the drawings a .rocking bar is shown which is adapted tobe rocked into or out of locking engagement with the stems, I wish it to be understood, that my invention is not limited to this feature and that the said locking member may be constructed in a different way.
At the front end' of each of the longitudinal bars 4 a head 10 is provided, the heads of the nine bars eoperat'ing tp form in the normal or inoperative positions of `the bars a continuous sectional ring, as is Shown in Fig. l. The development of the said ring seen from the front side of the machine is shown in F ig. 3, from which it appears that the iirst or uppermost Ahead 10 is in the form of a trapezoid, while the other eight heads are in the form of rhomboids. The trapezoidal head of the uppermost bar at is actuated by the stems of all the keys, so that it is is depressed. By depressing one of the keys one or more of the heads 10 is rocked to the side and in any case all the rocked heads form a continuous row which begins with the head 10', as is clearly shown in Fig. 3, wherein the first three heads are represented as shifted to the side, which has been eected by depressing the key representing the value 3, rlvhe nine heads 1() and 10 vform members for controlling members for a shifting tooth 11 which forms a part of the registering mechanism and revolves about a shaft 12 adapted to be lrotated by suitable means such for example as a crank 50 (Fig. 8). In the normal or inoperative position of the bars 4 the said tooth moves along the sectional ring provided loy the heads of the bars without engaging the same. However, if one of the keys of the column has been depressed so as to shift a corresponding number of consecutive heads, the revolving toothis rst caused to engage the beveled front face of the first head so that it is shifted laterally and into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3. In this position the tooth 11 `engages in teeth 13 of a numeral wheel 14 so as to rotate the same. The said numeral wheel is provided about its circumference with one or more series of the nuinbers from 1 to 9 and the zero sign. The number of heads which have thus been shifted into operative positions corresponds to the value 'of the depressedA key, and this value is transmitted tofthe uumeral wheel by advancing the same a corresponding number of teeth. 13. `When the said tooth strikes against the first one of the non-shifted heads it is shifted by the saine backward and into il'ioperative posi.- tion in which it is out of engagement with the teeth 13, islikewise shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3. This .spring will also serve to hold the tooth in inoperative position relatively to the teeth 13 after moving out of engagement with the rocked heads.
As shown in the drawings locking means are provided for locking the numeral wheels 111 which are otherwise loosely mounted on the shaft 12, which locking means release the numeral wheels while lueing engaged by the teeth 11. As shown such llocking means consist of levers 16 having rocking supports at points intermediate their ends on relatively fixed parts 1.7 of the fra-me of the machine and on pivots 18 disposed transversely of the shaft 12. The outer ends of the said levers engage bc tween noses 19 on the numeral wheels so as to lock the same against rotation, and the inner ends of thev levers are in engagement with sleeves 20 which are shiftable on the shaft 12 and formed with annular grooves 2l. The latter are engaged byextensions 23 of the shifting teeth 11, so that when the said teeth are being rocked in one direction the sleeves 2O are shifted axially so as to rock the levers 16,v the arrangement being such, Athat when shifting a tooth 11 into en.- gagement with a numeral wheel 13 the lever 16 is disengaged from the noses 19, and vice versa.
In my improved machine carrying means are provided as follows: Each of thenumeral wheels 14 is provided on its left hand face with four eqnidistantly-spaccd pins or other stops 33 corresponding to the number of the series of figures from O to 9 provided on the numeral wheels. In Fig. 5 the said stops are not shown. lVhen the number 9 of one of such series, followed by O, or vice versa, passes hole Si, the corresponding pin 33 engages a beveled cam face 35 of a rocking lever 3G mounted on a fixed pivot bolt 3T which is disposed parallel to the shaft 12 of the registering mechanism and on the vopposite side of the said shaft from the heads l0. Then the pin 33 enf gages the cani face 35 a beveled, lateral projection 38 on the op] osite end of the lever 33 is rockcdinto the path of a carrying lever 39. The said lever 3f) is mounted on ,a disk 1G which coperates with the numeral wheel lil of the next higher order and takes part in the rotation of the shaft 12. right and left hand operation of theA numeral wheel two levers 39 are provided, both of which have rocking supports respectivcly on pivots 40 which are disposed transversely of shaft l2, in a manner simi-v lar to that described with reference to tooth 11, except however that the levers do not project so far outward. In a calculating machine, the combination with a rotary registering member, o perating means therefor, normally inoperative means for coupling said registering member and operating means, and vsetting members cooperating with the registering member, of controlling members operated by the setting members extending to points adjacent to the coupling means and adapted to be shiftedk by said setting members perpendicularly to the direction of movement of the registering member and into position for throiving said coupling means into operative position, the working portions of said controlling members abutting one another and forming a continuous guide Way for the coupling means, the abutting faces of said portions beinu beveled so as to form, when said members are shifted,'means for guiding` said coupling means into or out -of operative positions, stationary guide members provided at the front and rear ends of .the said continuous guide Way and formed l with correspondingly beveled faces providing means for guiding said coupling means into or out of operative positions, and means to return the setting members and controlling members into normal positions.

In a calculating machine, the combination with a registering wheel, a shaft loosely supporting the same, and operating means `or the registering Wheel, of a coupling member vfor said registering Wheel adapted vto connect the same with theA operating means, a member mounted on a relatively liXed part and adapted to be rocked into engagement with the registering Wheel to lock the latter against rotation with said shaft, and a sleeve longitudinally slidablc on said shaft and 'engaged bysaid coupling member and locking member for transmitting rocking moven'ient from said coupling member to said locking member.

In a calculating machine, the combination with at least two adjacent registering members of different order, of a rock-1 ing member mounted on a relatively fixed part and adapted to be rocked by the registering member of lower order, operating means for lthe registering members, a coupling member adapted to couple said operating means and registering members and disposed in position for being thrown by said rocking member into coupling position, and means to retract said coupling member into non-coupling position.
