srnIne-LAr'crI'.
To all 107mm it may concern:
lie it knownthat I, FLOYD N. PERK NS, re siding at Freeport, inthe county of 'Stephenson and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful}; Improvements in Spring-Latches, of whichthe following is a specification. I l
My inventionrelates to certain improvements designed to afford a spring latch adapted for use upon doors which it is de sirab-le to openby a pull upon the side to; ward which the door opens or by, a push upon the'oppo'site side.
The purpose of the invention is to provide a simple, compact and efiicient device of this sort which can be manufactured cheaply and also easily applied to the particular. use which may be found desirable.
To this end the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, form and arrangement the preferred embodiment of which will be fully illustrated and described herein and. the essential characteristics of which will'be clearly defined in the claims appended hereto. 1
In the drawings Figure 1 is a front elevation of a complete latch; Fig. 2 is a transverse section in the, line 22 of Fig. 1 look ing in the direction of the arrow 2 and showing the parts in the locked or closed position and Fig. 3 is a similar section showing the parts in the unlocked position at the point wherethe closing of the door has brought them in contact and a further closing movement will trip the latch and bring it into the position seen in Fig. 2.
Referring to these drawings A is a suitable casing provided with screw holes, a, a, by means of whlch 1t 1s designed to be secured to the casing or frame against which the door closes and'with outwardly projecting ears, 0, a between which is hung a rocking lever, B, by means of a pivot'pin, Z).
This lever has projectionsradiating from the pivot pin in the form of a foot, 6 two fingers, b b and'an arm, 6 Tothebottom of the casing issecured a cup, C,-in which is confined under longitudinal compression a coiled spring, -D, pressing upwardly against a spring table, E, having a depending leg or spring arbor, e, which holds it in place uponthe spring. The foot, 6 rests upon the spring table, moving thereon from the position seen in Fig. 2 to that seen in Fig. 3, the limits of thisrnove- Specification of Letters Patent.
foot Z2 is well to thejleft ment being fixed the fingers r6 79 the Patented Sept. 1, 191 4. Application filed April 15, 1914. Serial No. 831,981.. i
former engaging the casing as seen in Fig; 3 to check the movement in one direction and the latter" engaging the spring table as seen in Fig. 2 to check the movementin the other direction. 1 1 g It should be noticed that in 2 the line of the thrust ofthefspring' upon the p of thepiv'ot of the arm so that the r0rce f ruw spring is strongly applied to hold the arm; in the posi tion shownf On the other hand in Fig. 3
the thrust ofthei sprin upon the foot is o substantially in linejiviththe pivot so that the arlnwi'll naturallyremain in the position shown and beheldthere by the friction of the partsfuntil force is applied to shift the line of said thrust" toward the position shown in Fig. 2.
' Onthe under side of the easing, A and within the chambered portion thereof is an incline, 64?, see Fig. 2, which aids the rocklng lever .B to swing the spring table slightly in passing'from the position seen in Fig. 8 to that seen in Fig. 2. This increases,
the effectiveness of the spring by giving it a better purchase upon the rocking lever than would be otherwise obtained. 2 I
A handle, F, is provided with screw holes, f, f, by means of which it is intended to be fastened to the door and has a laterally projecting arm, P, which during the latter portionof the closing of the door strikes the finger b as seen in Fig. 8 and rocks the lever 13 toward the position seen inFig. 2 until the spring takes hold and completes such movement. I
In the end ofthe lever B is a perforation, b andin line tliere'with in the positionseen inFig, 2 is 'a perforation, f ,'in the handle F affording a convenient means of applying a padlock or in certain possible cases a pin to hold the latch against the movement ordinarily effected by forcibly moving the door.
Starting withtheparts in the'fpositions seen in Fig. 2 the opening of the door forces the handle portions, including'athe arm f upward, crowding the arm 6* of'the lever B ahead of it until the. latter swings backward out of the Way of the arm f and is held there by the force of the spring D. When the dooris closed the arm f of the handle F strikes the finger b? and rocks the lever back into'the position-seen in Fig.2 in which the tension of the spring is applied tov the door handle to hold the door in the closed position.
I recognizethe possibility of variation in the particular construction, form and arrangement of the parts herein described and hence do not limit myself to the exact details shown but will point out the essential features thereot' in the following claims in which it is my intention to cover all of the patentable novelty contained in my invention overthe prior art.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. in a device 01 the class described the combination with a part for attachment to the door having a suitable projection, oi a casing adapted for attachment to the frame, a rocking lever pivoted to said casing having an arm for engagement with said part upon the door, suitable fingers to limit its movement in either direction and a radiallyprojecting toot, a cup secured to said casing, a spring under longitudinal compression in said cup, spring table resting upon the spring and pressing upon said foot to hold the arm alternately in the locked or unlocked position, and an incline upon under surface of the casing engaging the the spring table in its upward movement and rocking said table and spring in the direction in which the foot of the rocking lever is moving when passing toward the locked position.
2. In a device of the class described the combination with a part for attachment to the door having a suitable projection, of a casing adapted for attachment to the frame, a rocking lever pivoted to said casing having an arm for engagement with said part upon the door, suitable fingers to limit its move- .ient in either direction and a radially pro: jecting toot, a cup secured to-said casing, a spring under longitudinal compression in said cup, a springtable resting upon the spring and pressing upon said foot to hold the arm alternately in the locked or unlocked position and engaging one of said ingers in one position of the lever.
in: witness whereof I have signed the above application for Letters Patent at Freeport, Illinois, this 25th day of March.
