" a subject of the German, Emperor, and
resident of Berlin, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ratchet Mechanism for Reversible Apparaa .tus for Lighting Gasfrom a Distance, of which the following'j'is a Specification.
,This "invention relates to ratchet vmechanism for reversible. apparatus forlightin'g gas from a. distance and has for its object to provide avniech'anfism. such that the lighting apparatus,'without'its construction be- 111g ged, canbe used both for ordinary and inverted burnersg; i ACCOldll'lgtO"'tl1 1S 1 1lV6Ilt1OI1 the pawl engages the ratchet wheel in one position of the'lighting devicelmerely by gravity,
while vin the inverted position this engagement is "brought aboutbythe action of a tipping weight which, in the former-position, does not .on the/pawl. This arrangement insures the-pawl engag ng the ratchet Wheel in both positions of-the lighting' device with exactly the same force which show one form of ratchet mechanism according tothisjinve'ntionin conjunction with Pap paratus foroperating a gas burner actuated from a'distance by yari'atlon'sj 1n the gas pressure, Figure 1 1s a vertical sect on,
partly'in elevation, of a gas lighting device for upright burners. Fig. .2 is a side elevation thereof, the apparatus being reversed a [vice, and Fig. 1 is a sectional planonLan (turned upside' do'wn) 'for inverted gas burners. Fig. 7 A,-B of Fig. '1, the}hand' adjustment deenlarged scale, ontheli gonf the pawl withthel tipping w i hty 3111' the apparatus shown" in Fig. )1,- the diaphragm" 2 "which" closes at one side the casing 1,*is' exposed-toi the pressure of the v 1 Specificationofjetters Patent Applicationfiletl e 19, sia
closed, and in that way 3 shows in section on line gas the 3 and branch con du t;1;4 '1ntof the front chamber 5. Theos- PatentedSepti, .1914.
cfllationfo'f the aph g 2 produced for instance by a pressure impulse is transmit.- ted byZthe, lever system 6,. 7 connected-t0 the diaphragm, :to the feed lever 8 pivoted to,;the.lever,7 and mountedloosely on a spindle '28 1. sup feed le v er'8 is provided with'a lateral arm 10,]wlnch carries a stop pin 11 parallel to a sp ndle 9. q-Behind the feed lever 8, on the spindle 9gis pivotally mounted a tipping weight 12 which, in thepo'sition of the ratchet W mechanism shown in Fig.1, restson a stop pin 13' parallel to thespindle 9 and secured to] the lighter arm 14 of a double-armed.
pivotedpawl 14, 15 loosely mounted on the spindle 9. In thearrangement of the apparatus for upright burners, shown in Fig. 1, the engagementjof the arm 15 of'the pawl 14, -15, with the ratchet fore insuredby the tipping weight 12*bearing against the stop pin tion or advance of the wheel 16 is transo'rted inthe casing 1." The 18. f-The feed 1110- wheel 16, is theremitted in the'well known: manner tothe gas supply'fvalve -(not shown) ins'uch a manner that the latter is temporarily, opened or the :burner pipe or shut off from the. same. It the apparatus above described is reversed, (that ;1s -1 to say, turned upside down). as
shown in Fig, 2 of the drawing. for. employ-- ,ment with inverted of the 'pawl ld, -15 will-remain 1n engagement with the jratchetw'heel 16 owing to the action of gravity, while the tipping weight 12 bearing on the stoppin 11 of the arm 10, will no longer exert By means of the ratchet mechanism above described, the gas lighting apparatus 'illus used both. for up trated can therefore; be right and inverted burners,without changing'itsconstruction} j v l In. the apparatus illustratedpthe ratchet 7 wheel 16 is also" combined with aspecial gas is admittedinto gaj urners, the arm 15 any action on the pawl. J

19 ma'nner, de i swings, ismou nte d on a feed lever 22 which ing which the spindle 28, and; by meansoi the square portion 23, the feed lever 22, can,
be moved in such a manner that the pawl 25, and its movement is limited at both sides, by :a double arm 26 mountedionthe spindle 28and striking an inclined projec tion27 ofthe casing 1. As will be seen, the pawl 17, 18 in the gas lighting apparatus illustrated is used not only as a feed pawl for thehand adjust ment device, but also-at the same time as a locking pawl preventingthewheel 16 from turning backward.
It will be understood that the ratchet mechanism above described is suitable-for reversible gas lighting apparatus of all types more particularly also for-those operated by electricity or compressedair;
