Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM C. HUEB- NF-R, a citizen of the United States, residing at Burch), in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Photographic-Printing Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to apparatus or machines for producing single or, repeated photographic prints or designs upon sensitized plates or stones which are afterward finished in any suitable manner for printin g in one or more colors, such afpparatus or machines comprising a holder or the sensitized plate or stone, at light chamber which i arranged opposite the sensitized surface and which carries a transparent negative or positive which is pressed against the sensitized surface, and a back support or pressure device which bears against the rear side of the plate or stone for producing a close and uniform contact of the positive or negative with the sensitized surface, the arts being adjustable in such manner that t e print or design can be produced upon any desired portion of the sensitized surface.
The object of this invention is to produce a machine of this character in which the adjustable parts are mounted in a novel and desirable manner for placing the sensitized surface in the printing position quickly and actmrately.
The accompanying drawings show two different styles of apparatus embodying the invention, a horizontal apparatus'in which the sensitized plate or stone lies horizontally and the light chamber and ressure device are arranged respectively be ow and above the same; and a vertical apparatus in which the sensitized plate or stone stands vertically and the light chamber and pressure devicestand on opposite sides thereof.

Referring first to the horizontal appa: ratus shown in Figs. 15, A represents the lower portion of the stationary main frame which, as shown, is of circular skeleton form and is surmounted by an upright yoke a connecting opposite sides thereof. B repre sents the sensitized plate which is secured in a holder C. The latter consists of a rectangular frame provided at opposite ends with clamps c 0' for engaging opposite ends of the plate. ()ne of the clamps is movable toward and from the other for securing and stretching the sensitized plate by scrcivs on one end of the holder, which screws are operated by a chain passing around wheels 'on the adjusting screws and an operating wheel 0* adapted to be turned by any suit able means. The light chamber E and the pressure device or back support F, which may be of, any suitable construction, are arranged respectively below and above the plate holder C and can be adjusted horizontally to lace them opposite any desired portion 0 the sensitized plate. The carriage slide g is adjusted radially in its guide-way 9 by any suitable means, for instance, an adjusting screw I journaled on the rotatable sup porting frame II, and the latter is rotatably adjusted by any suitable means, for instance,
' the carriage by a crank shaft K provided with a pinion k meshing with a toothed rack k on the frame H. The rotary adjustment of the frame H is indicated by a pointer k on the adjusting frame cotiperating with a scale k on the main frame, see Fi 4. The light chamber can thus be adjustetf radially on the rotatable frame toward and from the axis thereof and also in an arc concentric wit-h the axis of the rotatable frame H by turning the latter, whereby the light chamber can be moved to any position relative to the sensitized surface within the range of said radial and I1} tary adjustments. The light chamber is so mounted that it retains in all of its adjusted positions a position parallel to a given line, in order that the prints may always be made on the sensitized surface in an upright position, or in a position parallel to such line. For. instance, the side line of the light chamber may be kept parallel with the side line of the sensitized surface. This may be accomplished by parallel shafts L L which extend through bearings l on opposite ends of G and are journaled at their ends in bearings l Z adapted to slide on parallel horizontal rods or shafts Z Z mounted on thestationary main frame-at right angles to the shafts L L. Since the carriage G is free to swivel on the slide g and to slide on the guide shafts L L and the guide sha'fts L L are free to slide on the guide rods or shafts Z' 1, these shafts permit the carriage of the light chamber to be adjusted radially on the supporting frame and to turn with the supporting frame and at the same time remain parallel with the edges of the sensitized plate B. The light chamber is movable vertically toward and from the sensitized plate on guide pins m on the carriage G and is provided at o posite ends with toothed racks m mes ing with pinions m which are so connected with the shafts L L that they turn with the same, but can slide thereon with the carriage G. The shafts L are connec:ed b bevel pinions m m to the shaft Z so that y turning this shaft by a crank 1 or otherwise, the shafts L L are rotated simultaneously for moving the light' chamber into and out of contact with the sensitized-surface. The bevel pinions m are journaled on the bearings Z for the shafts L L and are connected with the shaft Z so that they can slide thereon in the adjustments of the light chamber. Z, Fig. 4, represents a ratchet and dog for holding the light chamber 'when moved into contact. with the sensitized plate. The pressure device F, or back support, consists of a padded block which is arranged above the holder for the sensitized plate and, like the light chaniber, is mounted on a carriage swivelcd on a slide which is adjustable in a diametrical guide-way on a' horizontally rotatable supporting frame. 1 X represents the car-- connected by preferably riage, n the slide, n the guide-way therefor, and O the rotatable supporting frame. The pressure device is movable toward and from the sensitized plate on guide pins 1' on the can riage N and is moved by pinions r on the shafts Q Q engaging with toothed racks r on the pressure device. The shafts Q, Q are bevel pinions 1' r to the shaft 9 so that t e shafts Q Q are turned simultaneously for moving the pressure device into and out of contact with the sensitized plate by turnin the shaft g. (1, Fig. 5, represents a rate let and dog for holding the pressure device when moved into contact with the sensitized plate. The adjusting screws I and P are turned simultaneously for correspondingly adjusting the light chamber and the pressure device. for instance, by a connecting shaft 8 which is geared by bevel pinions s 8' to the adjusting screws I and P and by bevel wheels 8 s to an electric motor S mounted on the rotatable frame H.
vIn order to provide a very exact or fine adjustment of the light chamber and pressure device, the adjusting mechanism therefor is controlled by an automatic electrical controller which is indicated at T.
T he construction of this controller is not herein claimed and is, therefore, not described. It is constructed and operates as fully disclosed in my application Serial No. 619,560, filed April 7, 1911. The mechanical features of the mechanism for adjusting the light chamber and pressure device or the rotatable frames and for turning the rotatable frames can be modified in various Ways without departing from the invention. i

I claim as my invention:
1. The combination of a device for bolding a sensitized part, a photographic device for producing a print upon the sensitized part, one of said devices being adjustable with reference to the other, adjusting means for said adjustable part capable of circular movement in a plane parallel with the surface of said sensitized part, and guiding means for maintaining said adjustable part in positions which are parallel with each other inthe different adjustments of said part.
2. The combination of a holder for a sensitized part, a photographic device for producing a print upon the sensitized part, an adjusting device for said photographic device capable of circular movement in a plane parallel with the surface of said sensitized part, and a guiding device which maintains said photographic device in positions. which are parallel with each other in the different adjustments of said photographic device.
3. The combination of a holder for a scnsitized part, a light chamber opposite said sensitized art for illuminatinga photographic printing plate, an adjusting device for said chamber capable of circular movement in a plane parallel with the surface of said sensitized part. and guidin means for maintaining said chamber in positions which are parallel with each other in the diiferent adjustments of said chamber.
4. The combination of a light chamber for illuminatin a photographic printing plate, a pressure evice, a holder for supporting a sensitized part between said light chamber and said pressure device, an adjusting device for said pressure device capable of circular movement in a plane parallel with the sur face of said sensitized 'part, and guiding means for maintaining said pressure device in positions which are parallel with each other in the difi'crcnt adjustments of said pressure devEce.
5. The combination of a light chumbcr for illuminating a-photographic printing plate, a pressure device, a holder for supporting a sensitized"part between said light chamber and said pressure device, adjusting devices for said light chamber and said pressure device capable of circular movement in planes parallel with the surface of said sensitizcd part, and guiding means for maintaining said chamber and said pressure device each in positions which are parallel with each other in the different adjustments of aid chamber and prcssurc. de ice.
