To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM C. HUEBNER, a' citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Photographic-Printing Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates more particularly to photographic printing or composing apparatus for photographin original prints directly in predetermine and registered locations upon the sensitized surfaces of printing press plates which are after wards suitably finished and used in mechanical printing presses for printing in one or more colors. These apparatus are adapted for producing photographically upon the sensitlzed ress plate any desired number of like or di erent prints in any desired position and relative arrangement. For
instance, the apparatus are adapted for repeating prints from the same transparent printing plate or negative in a desired arrangement on a single sensitized press plate which is afterwards developed and used for mechanically printing a plurality of impressions; and also for composing purposes where it is desired to place different subjects in a predetermined arrangement on the' printing plate. These apparatus are also adapted for making press plates for multicolor printing where it is necessary to photograph prints in exact register on the different sensitized plates that are used in presses for printing the different colors.
Such apparatus comprise a support for the sensitized press plate; a support for holding a transparent photographic negative or printing plate (hereinafter called the printing plate) in front of the sensitized surface of the press plate; a pressure device, or back support for the sensitized plate, for causing an intimate, uniform contact of the sensitized surface with the printing plate; means for causing light to act through the printing plate for photographing the print on the sensitized surface; and adjusting means for producing a relative movement between the sensitized and printing plates parallel with the sensitized surface to enable the prints to be made in desired predetermined locations and positions on the sensitized plate, and for producing a relative movement between the sensitized and printing plates towardand from each other to place said plates into and out of contact.
One object of the invention is to provide a photographic printing apparatus of this kind of improved, simplified and inexpensive construction, whereby photographic prints can be rapidly made on sensitized press plates in any desired or necessary relative arrangement and position with great accuracy and with the minimum labor. Another object of the invention is to improve and simplify photo printin apparatus of thls kind in the respects hereinafter described and set forth in the claims.-
In the embodiment of this invention hereinafter described in detail, the sensitized plate is supported in a vertical plane in a holder which is adjustable in a planeparallel with the sensitized surface for placing different portions of the sensitized late opposite the printing plate, and whic is also movable a limited dlstance toward and from the printing plate to place the sensitized plate into and out of contact with the printing plate Two supports for two printing plates are hinged at the right and left hand sides of the apparatus to swing horizontally so that either support can be swung to place the printing plate thereon in an operative position opposite the sensitized plate, the swinging support being locked and held stationary in this position during the printin operation. The pressure device is arran ed at the rear side of the sensitized plate an is moved toward and from the printing plate for pressing the sensitized plate into close contact with the printing plate and freeing the sensitized plate by the same device that causes the movement of the sensitized plate toward and from the printing plate. The pressure device is also capable of adjustment parallel with the surface of the printing plate both rotatably on two different axes and radially to enable the pressure device to be placed in different positions and locations corresponding with different adjustmentsof the printing plates, and the pressure device is swiveled to swing horizontally and to an inoperative position where it is readily ac.-
cessible for changing and adjusting the pressure heads.

.20, 20", preferably tubular, arranged at the three corners of a triangle and rigidly connected at their lower ends by a horizontal base 21 and at their upper ends by a horizontal top plate or frame 22."
The sensitized press plate A is supported in a vertical position in a plate holder B which is mounted on a supplemental carriage C arranged to move vertically parallel with the plane of the sensitized plate, on a main carriage D which, in turn, is movable horizontally parallel with the plane of the sensitized plate, on the main frame. As shown, the main carriage D consists of a horizontal bottom 23 and a horizontal cross head 24 rigidly connected at their ends by upright columns or posts 25 which are preferably tubular. The carriage D is provided with supporting rollers 26 arranged to roll on horizontal ways on the stationary base 21. The carriage may be caused to travel parallel with the vertical plane of the sensitized plate by any suitable means, such as a guide rib 27 on the base 21 entering a guide oove 28 in the bottom of the carriage am? a guide rib 29 on the top plate 22 entering a groove in the top of the carriage D. The supplemental carriage C shown consists of horizontal top and bottom pieces 30 and 31 rigidly connected by vertical end bars 32. This carriage is slidably mounted by bearings 33 on the upright posts 25 of the main carriage and is preferably connected by chains 34 to weight-s35 movable vertically in the hollow posts. The chains 34 pass over pulleys 36 journaled in the upper ends of the posts. These weights partially or wholly' counterbalance the weight of the supplemental carriage and the plate holder thereon so as to permit the vertical adjustment of the carriage with minimum effort. The supplemental carriage may be supported and adjusted by any suitable means, such as two upright screws 37 which are suitably journaled on the main carriage D and turn in screwthreaded holes in the bottom bar of the supplemental carriage. These screws are caused to turn simultaneously by suitable gears 38 connecting their lower ends to a horizontal shaft 39 journaled on the main carriage D. The sensitized plate holder B consists of a rectangular skeleton frame provided with suitable means for securing and stretching the sensitized plate thereon. For instance, the plate holder is provided at its upper portion with a clamp 40 for the upper edge of the sensitized plate and with a clamp 41 for vertically the lower edge of the plate mounted to move on the plate holder toward and from the other clamp 'to suit sensitized plates of different widths and to stretch the plate and hold it taut and smooth.
The printing plates E, two of which are shown, are secured on plate holders F detachably mounted on two oppositely arranged swinging heads or supports which are suitably hinged at the right and left hand sides of the machine so that either of the supports can be swung around horizontally from an inoperative position to a position between the two columns 20*, 20 to place the printing plate thereon opposite the sensitized surface of the sensitized plate. As shown, the swinging head G is hinged on the column 20 at the right-hand side of the machine and is provided with suitable means, such as vertically actuated by a handle 43 and adapted to enter keepers 44 on the stationary frame at the top and bottom of the swinging head for holding the head stationary in its operative position, and the other swinging head G is hinged on the left-hand column 20 and is provided with similar bolts 42 adapted to enter keepers 44 on the stationary frame for locking this head G" in its operative position. Only one of the swinging heads with its printing plate is used at a time and when one of the heads, as G, is in position for use, the other head is out of the way at one side of the machine, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. Therefore, while prints are being made from the printing plate on one head, an. operative can be placing and adjusting another printmovable bolts 42 ing plate on the other head or removing it, thus greatly increasing the speed of operation of the machine, since when the printing from one plate is finished the head carrying the same can be quickly swung out of the way and replaced by the other head having a plate thereon ready for use. The two swinging heads are alike except that they-are oppositely arranged at opposite sides of the machine. By the described construction the head which is not in use is located where ready access is afforded to it for placing the plate holder thereon and removing it and examining or adjusting the printing plate or its holder, and the swinging heads are held rigidly in the operative position without necessitating a heavy, cumbersome and expensive construction of the machine. Each head is provided with a circular opening 45 in which is adapted to be adjusted rotatably an index head on which the holder F for the printing plate is detachably secured. The index head consists of a circular disk 46 and a gear ring 47 dis osed at opposite sides of the vertical plate orming the swinging head and secured together by bolts 48. The disk 46 has an opening therethrough large enough to permit the passage of light to all parts of the largest printin plate for which the machine is adapted. The index head is rotatably supported in the opening 45 by rollers 49 journaled in pairs on rocking supports 50 pivoted on the swinging head, and is held in rolling contact with these supporting rollers by two eccentrically adjustable rollers 51 which bear against the upper portion of the circula; edge of the index head.
The holder F for the printing plate is removably secured stationarily on the index head so that the holder with the printing plate secured in position thereon can be quickly and easily placed on and removed from one of the supporting heads, and one holder with its printing plate can be replaced by another holder carrying a different printing plate. This plate holder consists of a rectangular skeleton frame carrying a fixed glass or transparent supporting plate 53 on the face of which the printing plate is adjustably secured by jaws or devices 54 engaging the beveled edges of the printing plate. For securing the plate holder F on the index head with the center of the printing plate exactly coincident with the center of the index head, the latter is provided below its light opening \with two hardened bearings 55 on which bearing faces on the lower edge of the plate holder are adapted to rest, and with an abutment 56 against which a bearing "57-on one endof the plate holder is firmly held by a lever actuated wedge 58 on the index head. The plate holder is held down firmly on the bearings 55-by a cam lever 59 engaging the upper edgeof the plate holder, and is forced and held firmly flat against the face of the index head by cam levers 60 which engage outwardly facing portions at the upper and lower edges of the plate holder.
The index head is adjusted rotatably on the swinging head so that the printing plate can be turned to make prints in any desired angular position on the sensitized plate by a pinion 61 journaled on the swinging head and meshing with the gear ring 47. This pinion is turned by a handle 62. The index head is locked in the position to which it is turned by a dog 63 provided with teeth adapted to engage the teeth of the gear ring. This dog is movedinto and out of engagement with the teeth of the gear ring by a screw 64 and is adjustable tangentially relative to the index head by screws 65 so as to enable an accurate adjustment of the index head to a minute fractional part of the width of one gear tooth.
As shown in the drawings, the holders B and F for the sensitized plate and the printing plate are constructed and removably mounted on their respective supports, and the index head is constructed, mounted and rotatably adjusted in the swinging head in the manner shown and described in my copending application, Serial No. 248,623, filed August 6, 1918, which contains a more complete description of said parts. Other constructions suitable for the purpose could, however, be adopted. I
Any suitable means may be employed for adjusting the supplemental carriage C and main carriage D respectively vertically and horizontally for placing any desired portion of the senstitized plate A opposite the printing plate. For adjusting the supplemental carriage, the shaft 39 is shown as being connected by pinions 66 to an upright shaft 67 journaled on the main carriage D and connected by a gear train 67 to an operating shaft 68 which can be turned by a crank applied to its outer end. A fine accurate adjustment of the supplemental carriage is effected b a fine ad usting shaft 69 turned by a han le or wheel 70 and provided with a worm 71 adapted to mesh with a worm wheel 71 on the operating shaft 68. The fine adjusting shaft is journaled eccentrically in a bushing which is adapted to be turned for throwin the fine adjusting worm into and out of mesh with the worm wheel on the shaft 68. After the supplemental carriage has been adjusted coarsely to an approximate position b turning the operating shaft 68 the fine a justing shaft is thrown into connection with, the shaft 68 and turned to give the desired accurate adjustment of the supplemental carriage. The
adjusting means shown for the main carriage D comprise a toothed rack 72 on one side of the carriage which meshes with a spiral gear 72 on an inclined shaft 73 suitably journaled on the main frame and connected by spiral gears 7 4 to a coarse adjusting shaft 75 provided at its outer end with a handle 76 for turning it. 77 is a fine'adjusting shaft adapted to be thrown into and out of geared connection with the coarse adjustin shaft in the manner explained above for e ecting a fineadjustment of the main carriage.
The mechanism for moving the sensitized plate into and out of contact with the printing plate is preferably constructed as follows f The supplemental carriage C is provided at its upper and lower portions with horizontal bars 80, 'see Fig. 1, to which the sensitized plate holder B is secured and which are movable horizontally on the supplemental carriage toward and fromthe printing plate holder. These bars 80 are provided with horizontal brackets or arms 81 which are slidably mounted on four slides 82 arranged at the four corners of the supplemental carriage to 'slide horizontally thereon in suitable guides 82, Fig. 7 toward and from the printing plate holder. The brackets 81 are adjustably connected to the slides 82 by screws 83 which are journaled to rotate and are held from endwise movement in j bearings on the slides and work in threaded holes in the brackets 81, so that by turning the screws the brackets are adjusted in or out on the slides. I The bars 80 and the connected sensitized plate holder are thus moved when 85 he slides 82 are moved and they can also be adjusted relatively to the slides 82 by turning the screws 83. The adjusting screws 83 for the four brackets are rotated simultaneously to produce equal adjustments of the four brackets by suitable mechanism, such as two vertical shafts 84, Figs. 1 and 5, at opposite ends of the supplemental carriage journaled in bearings 84 on the slides 82 and each connected by spiral gears 85 to two of the adjusting screws 83. The spiral gears at the lower ends of the two shafts 84 mesh with spiralgears 86 on a horizontal shaft 87 which is journaled in suitable bearings 8'2. on the lower pair of slides 82 and is provided at one end with a'handle or crank 88 for turning it. When this shaft is turned the four screws 83 are simultaneously rotated. Each of the slides 82 at the top of I the supplemental carriage is provided with a stud or roller 89, Fig. 1, which enters a slot 90 in a horizontal plate 91 which is arranged to slide in a suitable guide on the top of the supplemental carriage in a direction at right angles to the direction of move- 69 ment of the slides. The two plates 91 and 92 are provided on their edges with rack teeth with which mesh two pinions 93 which are splined on an upright shaft 94 and are confined by suitable yokes or devices 95 secured to the supplemental carriage so that these pinions will rotate with the shaft but can the shaft when the supplemental carriage is adjusted vertically. The shaft is connected, as by spiral gears 96, to a horizontal operating shaft 97 which is suitably journaled on the main carriage. by bevel gears 98 and 99 to a shaft 100 which extends longitudinally to the rear of the machine and is geared by a pinion 101 and a toothed sector 102 to an operating lever 103. The bevel pinion 98 is retained in fixed location by abearing 104:, and is splined on the shaft 97 so as to rotate therewith but permit the movement of the shaft 97 endwise through the pinion in the horizontal travel of the main carriage D. By swinging the operatinglever 103 the two slotted plates 91 and 92 are actuated and by slide on the engagement of the inclined portions of their slots with the studs 89, 89 move the slides 82 and the sensitized plate holder a limited distance, to or from the printing In this way the sensitized plate can be moved into contact with the f-ace'of the printing plate and withdrawn therefrom to a clearance position a short distance away from the printing plate, the movement of the sensitized plate toward and from the printmined by the inclination of the inclined portions of the slots 90 and 90 in the plates 91 and 92. 105 represents the pressure block of the device for pressing the sensitized plate into firm, close contact with the printing plate. This block, which has a yielding facing 105 is movable toward and from the printing plate and is also rotatably and radially adjustable in a plane parallel with the sensitized plate. In addition it is adapted to be swung laterally out from behind the sensitized plate. As shown, this pressure block is removably secured on a cylindrical stud 106 by a clamping ring 107 which permits the pressure block to be turned to any desired angular position on the stud and rigidly secured in such position by tightening the clamping ring. The stud 106 is rigid with a radially adjustable head 108 which is adapted to slide on a suitable radial guide 109 on a rotatable head-110 at the inner end of a spindle 111. The head 108 is adjusted radially by suitable means, such as a shaft 112 journaled in this head and provided with a worm 112 meshing with a toothed rack 113 on the rotatable head 110. The spindle 111 is arranged to slide and turn in a bearing' in a swivel support 114 which is adapted to turn horizontally on the upright column 20 of the main frame. As shown, this swivel support is provided at its upper and lower ends with trunnions 115 entering bearing sockets in the adjacent ends of upper and lower sections of the column, the swivel support and parts of the column being tied together by bolts 116 extending axially through the column sections and the trunnions of the swivel support. This swivel connection enables the pressure device to be swung around on the column from its operative position shown in Figs. 1 and 3 to the position shown in Fig. 10. The pressure head is then accessible for adjusting the same or changin blocks, and ready access is thus also afi'orde to the back of the sensitized plate. The
pressure device is locked in the opposite position by any suitable means, such as a spring bolt 117 on the column adapted to enter a hole in the upper trunnion of the swivel support. 118 represents a rack bar which extends lengthwise beneath the spindle 111 and is adapted to slide lengthwise in a guide slot in the swivel support. is provided at its outer end with a yoke 119 having a screw-threaded hole in which turns a screw 120 which is journaled to rotate and i held from endwise movement in the end of the spindle 111. The rack bar meshes with a pinion 121 which is suitably journaled on the swivel support and 1s turned by acrank This rack bar.
or handle 122. By turning this crank the spindle 111 with the pressure head carried thereby can be moved quickly inwardly and outwardly toward and from the sensitized plate. Suitably journaled in the yoke 119 is a shaft turned by a handle 123 and provided with a worm 124 meshing with a worm wheel 125 secured to the outer end of the spindle 111. By turning this handle 123 the spindle 111 with the pressure block can be rotatably adjusted about the axis of the spindle. When the pressure head has been withdrawn to its outer position shown in Fig. 1, by turning the handle 122 the swivel support 114 with the pressure device carried thereby can be swung horizontally around to the position indicated in Fig. 10. The described construction of the pressure device permits a pressure block of any required size to be used and readily secured on the radial head in any desirable angular position and adjusted radially to different positions concentric with or eccentric to the axis of the spindle 111. The spindle 111 can also be turned so that the radial adjustment can be in any'required direction. "Thus the pressure block can be placed opposite to any desired portion of the printing plate and turned to any desired angular position opposite said portion. The rack 113 preferably extends to one side only of the rotary head 109, as shown, so that by turning the head 109 to a suitable position the pressure block can be used in the extreme corner of the plate holder B without interference by the rack 113 striking the supplemental carriage C.
The pressure device could be constructed and mounted in different ways and yet enable the described adjustments.
The pressure device is also connected with the main operating lever 103 so as to be moved a limited distance toward and from the printing plate and to apply the pressure on the sensitlzed'plate when the lever 103 is operated. For this purpose a worm 127 is mounted in the swivel support 114 and adapted to mesh with the rack bar 118. ThlS worm is secured to a shaft 128 journaled eccentricallv in a bushing 129, Fig. 11, which is journa ed in a bearing 130 on the sw vel support 114 so that by turnlng this bushin the worm can be thrown into and out of mes with the toothed rack. The worm shaft can be turned by a handle 131, and it is also connected by spiral pinions 132 to a shaft 133 geared by bevel pinions 134 to the shaft 100. After the ressure block has been adjusted inwardly y.the handle 122 to a 051- tion almost in contact with the rear 0 the sensitized plate when the plate 1s 1n its clearance position, the worm 127 is moved into mesh with the rack bar 118. Then when the lever 103 is operated the worm will be turned by the described connections with the shaft 100 and will move the pressure block toward the printing plate simultaneously with the movement of the sensitized plate toward the printing plate. After the sensitized plate has been caused to contact with the printing plate by the action of the slotted plates 91 and 92, as above described, the continued movement of the lever 103 will further rotate the worm 127 and move the pressure block to apply the necessary pressure to the sensitized plate. This further movement of the pressure head is permitted by reason of the straight port-ions of the slots 90 and 90: in the plates 91 and 92. Thus the sensitized plate and the pressure device are both moved to and from the clearance position for placing the printing and sensitized plates into and out of contact by .the simple movements of a single lever 103 and the pressure is applied by a further movement of this same lever.
The apparatus is equipped with suitable means for appropriately indicating the various adjustments of the parts of the apparatus. Means such as disclosed in my application above mentioned, or other suitable indicating means may be employed for this purpose.
It is of course understood that in using the apparatus the prints are made by light passing through the printing plate and acting on the light sensitive surfaces of the sensitized plate. The light can come from a suitable electric lamp H movably supported in front of the printing plate holder, as shown in Fig. l, or otherwise arranged, or from any other suitable source of light.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a photographic printing apparatus. the combination of a holder for a sensitized plate, two supports each carrying a transparent printing plate, means whereby the supports are mounted at opposite edges respectively of the holder so that each plate may be moved from an inoperative position outside of said edges to a position such as to place the printing plate on said support opposite said sensitized plate, means for causing a relative movement of the sensitized and printing plates toward and'from each other to place them into and out of contact,
and pressure means for causing an intimate contact of the sensitized and printing plates.
2. In a photographic printing apparatus, the combination of a holder for a sensitized plate, two hinged supports each carrying a transparent printing plate, means whereby the supports are mounted at opposite edges 7 respectively of the holder so' that each plate may be moved from an inoperative position outside of said edges to a position such as to place the printing plate on said support oppos'ite said sensitized plate, means for causing a relative movement of the sensitized and printing plates toward and from each other to placethem into and out of com tact, and pressure means for causing an intimate contact of the sensitized and printing plates. 3. In a photographic printing apparatus. the combination of a holder for a senslt-ized plate, two supports each carrying a transparent printing plate and each arranged to move independently of the other to and.
from a position in which the printing plate thereon is opposite said sensitized plate, means for causing a relative movement of the sensitized and printing plates toward and from each other to place them into and out of contact, and pressure means for causing an intimate contact of the sensitized and printing plates.
4. In a photographic printing apparatus, the combination of a holder for a sensitized plate, two hinged supports each carrying a transparent printing plate and catch ,arranged to swing independently of the other to and from a position in which the printing plate thereon is opposite said sensitized plate, means for causing a relative movement of the sensitized and printing plate toward and from each other to place them into and out of contact, and pressure means for causing an intimate contact of the sensitized and printing plates.
i 5. In a photographic printing apparatus.

6. In a photographic, printing apparatus. the combination of a holder for a sensitized plate, two supports each carrying a transparent printing plate and each arranged to move independently of the other to and from a position in which the printing plate thereon is opposite said sensitized plate, means for holding each supportstationary with the printing plate opposite the sensitized plate, means'for causing a relative movement of the sensitized and printing plates toward and from each other to place them into and out of contact, and pressure means for causing an intimate contact of the sensitized and printing plates.
7. In a photographic printing apparatus, the combination of aholder for a sensitized pla e, means for moving and adjusting said holder in a plane parallel with the sensitized surface of said plate, a pair of supports for printing plates hinged at opposite sides of said apparatus to be swung one at a time to and from a common position opposite said sensitized plate, means for securing said printing plate supports in said osition opposite said sensitized plate, and meansfor moving said holder to cause said sensitlzed plate to contact with a printing plate held opposite thereto by one of said supports.
8. In a photographic printing apparatus, the combination of a holder for a sensitized plate, a support for a-transparent printing plate normally held stationary in front of said sensitized plate holder, means for causing a relative movement of the sensitized and printing plates to place them into and out of contact, and a pressure device normally located in rear of said sensitized plate holder and operable for causing an intimate contact of the sensitized and printing plates, said printing plate support and pressure device being mounted to swing laterally away from their normal positions respectlvely infront and in rear of the sensitized plate to afford access to said plate.
9. In a photographic printing apparatus, the combination of a holder for a sensitized plate, a support for a transparent printing plate and normally held stationary in front of said sensitized plate holder, vmeans for moving said holder to place the sensitized plate into and out of contact with the printmg plate, and a pressure device normally located in rear of said sensitized plate holder and operable for causing an intimate contact of the sensitized and printing plates, said printing plate support and pressure device being mounted to swing laterally away from their normal positions respectively in front and in rear of the sensitized plate to afford access to said plate.
10. In a photographic printing apparatus, the combination of supports for holdin a sensitized plate and a transparent printmg plate opposite each other, means for placin said plates into and out of contact wit each other, a pressure device, means for operating the same to cause an intimate contact of the sensitized and printing plates, said pressure device being mounted to swing laterally away from anormal operative position opposite the sensitized plate.
11. In a photographic printing apparatus, the combination of supports for holdin a sensitized plate and a transparent printmg plate opposite each other, means for placing said plates into and out of contact with each other, a pressure device comprising a pressure block, means for adjusting said pressure block to different operative positions opposite the rinting plate, and means for moving said blbck to cause-an intimate contact of the sensitized and printing plates,
and a support for said pressure device mounted to swing laterally away from a normal operative position opposite the sensitized plate.
12. In a photographic printing apparatus, the combination of supports for holding a sensitized plate and a transparent print-ing plate opposite each other, means for placmg said plates into and out of contact with each other, a pressure device comprising a pressure block, means for adjusting said pressure block radially and also rotatabl about two different axes to place the bloc in different operative positions opposite the printing plate, and means for moving said block to cause an intimate contact of the sensitized and printing plates, said pressure device being mounted to swing laterally away from a normal operative position opposite the sensitized plate.
13. In a photographic printing apparatus,
the combination of a support for a transparent printing plate, a holder for a sensitized plate, a carria on which said holder is mounted and whic is adjustable for plaqing different portions of the sensitized plate opposite the printing plate, a pressure del vice, and mechanism actuated by a single operating device for moving said holder on said carriage and said pressure device both a predetermined distance toward the printing plate and for further moving the ressure device to press the sensitized plate lnto intimate contact with the printing plate.
14. In a photographic printing aparatus, the combination of a support for a transparent printing plate, a holder for a sensitized plate, a carria on which said holder is mounted and whic is adjustable for placing different portions of the sensitized plate opposite the printing plate, apressure de,.

17. Ina photographic printing apparatus, the combination of a support for a transparent printing plate, a holder for a sensitized plate, a carriage on which said holder is mounted and which is adjustable for placing different portions of the sensitized plate opposite the printing plate, a pressure device. mechanism actuated by a single operating device for moving said holder on said carriage and said pressure device both a pre determined distance toward the printing plate and for further moving the pressure device to press the sensitized plate into intimate contact with the printing plate, said mechanism being disconnectible from the pressure device, and additional means for moving said holder on said carriage a pre-- determined distance for placing the sensitized plate into and out of contact with the printing plate, and means for adjusting said holder relative to said mechanism toward and from the printing plate.
19. In a photographic printing apparatus, the combination of a support for a transparent printing plate, a holder for a sensitized plate. a carriage on which said holder is mounted and which is adjustable for placing different portions of the sensitized plate opposite the printing plate, mechanism for moving said holder on said carriage a predetermined distance for placing the sensitized plate into and outof contact with the printing plate, means for adjusting said holder relative to said mechanism toward and from the printing plate, and means for pressing said sensitized and printing plates into intimate contact.
