i top sections, herein shown as of a round'` table, provided with a decorative rim 11,
of Fig. l1.I
To all whomt mayconcera:
Be it known that LEDWARD I-I. MnnsMAN, a citizen. of the United States, residingat Celina, in the countyof Mercer and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Extension-Tables," *of* which the following `is a specification.
Y My invention relates to improvements ink extension tables, and more particularly to' extension tables whereiny the extension is effected throughv the agency of a leaf per-l` manently associatedwith the table struc= i ture, and arranged to be hidden from view,
when the tableis closed.` l j .l One of the particular objects of my invention is to provide a construction ywhere-y by round tables, andtables having a rim set: in somewhat from theedge of the table top, maybe equipped with such a folding leaf.l
In the drawing,` wherein I have illustrated Van embodiment of my invention, 2F ig` lure 1 is a bottom plan view, withl parts Ain section, showing a round, rimmed, table equipped with `myfinvention, in closedposition; Fig. 2 is a cross section on line `2-42 of Fig. 1; Fig.3 is across section on line of Fig.x 1; Fig. 1; is a view,similar to` Fig;vr 1, showingthe `table in opened po-y sition; and Fig.y 5 isa `section on Vline 5-5 'In the drawingsi1l)y and 10a indicate table- Y 12 indicates ya pedestalof any suitable conl struction, herein. shown as a non-.dividing pedestal, supporting the usual bridge cap 13. cured, as at 15, to the bridge inusual fashion and coperate'with the inner slide pair 16 and the outer slide pair 162L in usual fashion.l The slides 16andy16a are secured to their respective tabletop sections 10 and 10a in such fashion as to leave a clearance space of suitable depth between the. central portion ofthe tablejtop `sections andthe tops of the slides for'the reception of the concealable leaf to be described. Tothis end, blocks 17 and 17 a are interposed ,between theslide members 16 and 16a and the respective tabletop sections, 10 and 10a, the slides being secured to the table-top sections, through said interposed blocks, only at their outer extremities, as indicated at 18, such fasten` ings being shown throughout as screws for purposes of clear i The middle pair of slides 111 are se-y y speciacaftiori of Lettersratent. 1 rv1;"15611159'Jd Spt, 1, 1914 Appiiationmedaugutnisii. seriainaeziacae. `f

llu'stratioii.. The ybridge cap 13K also has secu'redthereto, kas at 19, just inside of the slide, apair of lfraine strips IQOKwhich at one end are -spannedby a cross so l . The conceal-able"leaf'25l hasy a'central body l y ally securedy edge plates y26. yThe pivotal 1 portion of such ydimensions that it `fits leasily. i in the space between blocks 17 and'l17a when :the table is closed, `lying wholly withinthe rim 11 of the table. To its longitudinalside -edges (parallel with the slides) are pivot-l' connection ,between theedge plates or sec-` tions'fand the body of the leaf are preferablyk made through spring hinges 27,' of wel] known constructiomwhich tend to holdthe f fplatesin horizontal alinenient with the leaf-bodyy'llhejco-acting edges "of the edge vplates and'body ymay 'be correspondingly tongued and .l grooyed to increase :the strengthk ofthe joint and insure 'fitting of the parts.y r The edge members -26 carryrim sections k11"'ian'd` provision conveniently rnayy be made for latching each edge memberk depressed or ,retractedl position byy mountr` f f `ing on the under side ofthe .body 25g a f;
spring latch 29, of; any ordinary, well-known f' construction, to coperatewith clipy 30 on,
the rim section 11-,r as 2shown in Fig. 2.'
Upon the under side ofthe leaf body 25,
just inside Lof they frame` members 20, I se# cure, as at 31.',mstrips-32, andy connectthel strips SZKtotheframe membersQO by paral-J, I'lel swinging links'SS, each arranged in a triangularrecess 31` yin the frame strip 20.?
Forfraising and loweringthe leaf'on these swinging linlr inernbers, I provide a suite-v able] oscillating handleupon the cross beam 21 of the frame members 20, and con-f` nect it by a distance-rodf?, with the leaf, ,the operating.,oscillatory` `3,6 being preferf j y ably of ywell iknown construction, arranged` to throw the` end of theV rodBl attached'` thereto past deadl center forftoggle.A locking action when the handle is operated to 'ele` vate the leaf. Suitablefdowels l38 are pro'- vided `for effecting connection betweenthe f edges of thefleaf body and the yedge memi bers,-and the adjoining tableltop sections;
Iny operation, when 'it-is desired to extend ,the table, the table-top sections are :pulled-v apart, their slide members 16 and 16aslid5 ing'inL the slide member 141 `-attachedto the j pedestal, and leaving between the table-top sections a space somewhat wider ,than the iosf leaf 25. The edge'members of the leaf are ,1
ward and upward, raising it to the level of the tablestop sections, and then, when the table-top sections are pushed together, the
dowels effect rigid connection between all parts of the enlarged top.
For reduction of the size of the table, the
operation is reversed, the table-top sections being pushed' open sufficiently to give the necessary clearance, the operating handle 36 reversely moved to drop the leaf into its lowest position whereit stands in the space between the plane 0f the slide 14 and the 'plane of the table top sectionJ ythe edge members 26 of the leaf being then forced to depressed position and there latched, and the table-top sections then being moved to closed position to overlie and completely conceal the leaf. It will be observed thatwhen the table is closed, the leaf with its edges infolded is completely containedv within the smaller circle of the rim 11, but that when open and raised it fills out the full width of. the table, and provides a continuation :of the rim.
While I have herein described in some ldetail a particular embodiment ofmy invention, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that changes in the details thereof might be made without departurefrom the spirit 0f my invention `and within the scope of the appended claims.`y 'f 4 What I claim is:
1. In an extensionl table, the combination. of a set of three slide pairs; a bridge con-` nectin'g the central pairof slides; top sections Icarried by the inner and outer slide pairs', adapted to meet when the table'is closed, and mounted above their slides to leavea'central clearance space between the slides and top sections; a lea-fadapted to it intovsaid clearance space, comprising a'body part, and infolding side 'edge portions ,j a frame carried by said bridge and at one Vend extended therebeyond under oneof the table top sections; swinging links carrying the leaf-body, pivoted to said frame; an actuating lever carried by said extended end of the frame; anda connection between said lever and the leaf-body to elevate the leaf on its links when the lever is moved to one position.
2. In an extension table, the combination of slidable semi-circular top sections, slide vide lbetween the slides'and top sections a clearance space, a pedestal supporting the i slides, a leaf body of size to `permit inclusionl thereof in said clearance space within the confines of the top when the latter is closed, parallel links'connected to the said leaf portion and to a pedestal-carried part, said part extending between the slides toward the edge `of one of the table top sections, means upon said extended end of the said part to move 'said leaf portion upon said links into or out .of the plane of-the table-top, and edge sections pivoted. to the edges of said leaf portion.
y 3Q In an extension table, the combination of a set'of three slide pairs; a bridge'connectingv the slides of the central pair; top
sections carried by the inner and outer slide fpairs, adapted to meet lwhen the table is clsed` and mounted above their slides to Lleave a central clearance space between the @slides and the top sections; a leaf adapted to lfit into said clearance space comprising a body portion and hinged edge portions;v -a frame having sides secured to the bridge between the slides and at one end extending therebeyond under one of the table top sections; guide strips secured to the leaf body lbetween the sides of the frame; swinging links connecting the said frame sides and guide strips and mea-ns on the frame extension formovmg the leaf on its swinging` link connections. v
i 4. In an extension table, `the combination 4of 'a set of three slide pairs, a bridge coni gnecting the slides of the central pair, top sections carried by the `inner 'and outer slide pairs adapted to ymeet lwhen thetable is 4,closed and anounted above the slides to leave a central clearance space between the slides and the top sections`,'a leaf 'adapted to fit into said clearance space comprising a body portion and hinged edge portions, a frame comprising two sidemembers each secured 4upon Athe bridge parallel to the slides and extending beyond one edge of the bridge, and a cross member connecting said ex*- tended ends of the said members, guide .strips secured to the leaf body parallel to said members of the frame, swinging links connecting said side members of the frame and the respective guide strips of the leaf body, an actuating lever carried by said cross member of the bridge-carried frame, and a `connection between said lever and leaf body to move a leaf on'its link by'means of saidV l lever.
In testimony whereof I hereunto 'set myl hand in the presence of two witnesses. members secured to the top sections to proi 2 EDI/VARI) HJMERSMAN. In the presence of- MARY F. ALLEN, W. LINN ALLEN..
