Description

itluinu THOMAS S.' ENGLEDOW, OF OEDARYFALLSQIOWA.
Letters Patent No.1105909, dated January 10, 1871.
' IMPROVEMENT IN BEE-HIVES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it -known that I, THoMAs S. ENeLnDow, of Cedar Falls, in the county of Black Hawk and State of Iowa, have invented a new`and valuable Improvement in Bee-Hives; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this speciiication, and to the letters and igures ofreference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawing is a representation of my ee-'llive in longitudinal vertical sect-ion.`
Figure 2 is a perspective view ofthe hive, the main case and top being removed.
Figure 3 is a perspective view 'of oneco|nb-iiame.
The nature of my invention consists in certain improvements upon the bee-hive for which Letters Patent No. 86,063 have been granted to me; and
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A represents the base of the hive, inside of which is the inclined bottom "B.
Around and near the upper edge of the base A is a rim, a, upon which rests the rectangle or sectional wall z.
On the ease C rests the top D, which latter' contains the honey-boxes E E, said boxes resting upon the comb-cards or' frames G G, a slat bottom, H, being between them.
Within and at or near the center ofthe rectangle s are pivoted two wire or rod frames, l1 1),-on opposite sides, upon which the comb-frames G G are hung by means ot metal straps d d, attached to the end pieces e, for the bees to pass through from one card to aixother in winter to get food without having to pass over the top, whichhin very cold weather, often destroys the life of many bees.
In the` center and outside bars of the comb-cards are also staples yi i, for fastening in comb in case ol' transfers. -V
By the addition of the yrectangle or sectional wall z the bee-tender is enabled to remove the entire combcase, with all its frames, from the foundation A, for cleaning and other purposes.
Having thus fully described my invention,
That I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is*
l. The combination of the wire frames b l1 and frames' G G with ,the rectangle z, snbstantiallyas,
specified.
2. .Ihe combination ot the base A with inclined ybottom B, movable ina-incase C, movable top l), wire frames l) l1, rectangle z, and comb-cards ('l- G, all con* structcd and arranged substantially as and l'or the purposes herein set forth;
4In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence ol two witnesses.
'IIIOLWIAS S. EJGLEDOW. Witnesses:
