RAILWAY-TIE.
Application filed March 28,1914. Serial No. 827,993.
To all whom if; may concern Bev it known that I, ALVA A. LooMIs, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Akron,-.in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, have inventedcertain new and useful. Improvements in Railway-Ties, of-which' the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in railway ties and more particularly to metallic ties, the ob ect of the invention being to provide a metallic t1e wherein the rails are seated in position and securely clamped in place without the usual fish plates and bolts which extend through the rail and the fastening means.
Another object of the invention is to provide a metallic tie having fastening means.
whereby the "same may be used'equally as well at the meeting ends of the rails, hold the same securely in position and eliminate the necessity of the removable fastening means now in use. a
Another object of the invention is the provision of a metallic tie of the above character which will possess advantages in points of efiioiency and durability, is inexpensive of manufacture and atthe same time is simple in construction and operation.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, pointed out in the claims and shown in the accompanying drawings,
in which Figure 1 is a top plan view illustrating the rail fastener and tie; and Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof, parts being broken away and illustrated in section.
In, the embodiment of my invention, I illustrate cross ties which. are preferably U- shaped in cross section and arranged in an inverted position, said cross ties being generally indicated by the numeral l. The rails 2 are mounted upon the top of the tie adjacent the ends thereof and are held against lateral movement in one direction by means of the plates3, the longitudinal edges of which are bent downwardly, as shown at l and adapted to engage over the edges of the tie, said plates being securely retained in position by means of the rivets 5. The inner ends of the plates 3 are curved upwardly, as shown at 6 and are adapted to engage over the base flanges of the railsQ upon the outer sides thereof to retain saidurails against lateral movement in one direction.
Pivotally mounted upon the tie I are the clamping rods 7, the inner ends of which are ofi setpas shown at 8*, thence extended through the spaced openings 9 within the body of the tie and thence arranged in a plane parallel with the body of the rod,
whereby to prevent the detachment of the clamping rod with respect to the tie." The engaging ends of the rods are bent upon themselves to form the loops 10 which are adapted to engage over the inner base flanges of the rails 2. i
the loops 10, as shown at 11 andare removablydisposed within the openings 12 which are formed in the side walls of thetie to retain the loops 10 into clamping engagement with'the base flanges of the rails. It Wlll be apparent that the clamping members 7 may be swung outwardly when it is deplace them thereon.
lVhile I have shown and described the sired to remove the rails from the tie or preferred form of my invention, it will be obvious that various changes in the details of construction and m the proportions may be resorted to for successively carrying my invention into practice, Without sacrificing any of the novel features ordeparting from the scope of the invention, as definedby the appended claims.
What I claim is 1. A deviceof the class described including a U-shaped tie, clamping plates secured to the ends thereof, clamping rods having their inner ends pivotally mounted within the body of the tie and their other ends bent upon themselves to form loops adapted to engage over the inner base rails and. their extreme ends disposed transversely across the inner ends of said loops, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A, device of the class described including a U-shaped tie member, clamping plates secured to the ends thereof, clamping rods having their inner. ends pivotally mounted within the body of the tie and their outer anges of the The extreme outer ends'e'x tend transversely across the inner ends of ends bent upon themselves to form loops In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my adapted for engagement with the base signature in thepresence of two witnesses. flanges of the rails and having their extreme r ALVA A. LOOMIS ends extendmg inwardly across the lnner I ends of the loops and adapted for remov- \Yitnesses: able engagement Within the side walls of O. S. JOHNSON, the tie, as and for the purpose set forth." CHAS. HIBELL.
