IGNITION DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SnRnNo N. AYREs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Plainfield, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented new and ,use ful Improvements in Ignition Devices, of which the following is a specification.
The general object of the invention is to improve the construction of gas ignition devices in point of simplicity, general efiiciency and low cost of manufacture. And to this end the invention resides in providing a base which is adapted when attached to a gas fixture, to support a filament adapted to be rendered incandescent by the passing therethrcugh of an electric current, directly over the burner; and further to adapt the base to act as a means for controlling the passage of current through the filament and to be operated to close the circuit simultaneously with the opening of the supply cock.
Other objects will appear and be better understood from that embodiment of my invention of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, in which i Figure 1 is a side elevation of the invention in use with an inverted mantle. Fig. 2 is a detail plan of the invention. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4. is a cross section on the line 4.-4 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a detail plan of the attaching element.
The igniter comprises a base or body indicated generally by a formed of metal and in the present instance, shown as adapted for attachment to the metallic canopy 5 which forms a part of the inverted incandescent burner or fixture I) attached to the gas pipe 0. Referring now to Fig. 1 it will be observed that the igniter is arranged with its free end portion directed through one of the openings 6 in the canopy 5 and above the asbestos filament (not shown) and disposed in the globe which is supported by the canopy.
The body a includes a coiled filament 7 of platinum or such other material as will readily glow upon the passing therethrough of an electrical current generated by a battery made up of one or more cells. The body of the filament 7 extends transversely of alining openings 88 in metallic plates 9-9, and the ends of the filament are suitably fastened each to one of the said plates. The said plates 99 are superimposed one upon the other but insulated from each other by the presence of insulating materialfas rubber 10. The plates 99 are suf perpo-sed on the free end portion of an attaching plate 11 from which the adjacent of the said plates is insulated by the presence of the insulating material 12. The plates 9-9 are herein shown as fastened to one end of the attaching plate 11 by a screw 13 which passes through openings in the said plates and in the attaching plate 11 and which is insulated from the said attaching plate 11 by insulating material 14 and from the lower plate 9 by an extension of the insulating material 10. The screw 13, however, is in contact with the wall of the opening through which it passes in the upper plate -9 and a nut 15 cooperates with the screw to effect the fastening of the plates 99 to the attaching plate 11 and also cooperates with.
the screw 13 to function as a binding post to which an electric conducting wire 16 is connected. The'inner end portion of the lower plate 9 is extended beyond the corresponding end portion of the upper plate 9 and overlies a circuit closer in the form of a tongue 17 The said tongue is formed by making longitudinal incisions 1818 in the attaching plate 11 and having these incisions intersect at one end.
19 is an operating lever for the circuit closer and is formed by making longitudinal incisions 20-20 in the plate 11 which incisions merge one into the other at one end, whereby to permit of the offsetting of the free end of the lever 19 with respect to the plate 11. The incisions 202O are extended at one end beyond the innerend of the tongue 17, hence the tongue forms a regular extension of the inner end portion of the lever and the portion of the latter which connects with the plate 11 is in the form of relatively narrow strips 21-21 which yield and function as a fulcrum for the lever when the free end of the same is depressed. Now this depressing of the free end of the lever has the eiiect of raising the free end of the tongue 17 into contact with the extended portion of the lower plate 9, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 3. The free end portion of the plate 11 at a point beyond the free end of the lever 19 is suitably adapted as by bending, to form an attaching foot 22, which, in the present in stance, shown to accommodate itself to the lower portion of the mantle 5 and to be provided with an openingfor a bolt 23 operating element in the form of a chain 27 which operates, when pulled, to close the cock when the same is opened, as. shown in Fig. l.
2 8 and 29 are chain sections and 30 is a linkthe opposite ends of which are provided with eyes 3131 which are attached to the opposed ends of the'chain sections28 and 29. One end ofthechain section 28 is attached to the rock arm26 and the link is passed through an opening 82 in the free end of the lever 19, the diameter of the eye 31 of said link being such as will prevent the said eye from passing through the opening 32 The chain section 28 is so proportioned in length as to hold the upper eye 31 a dis tance above the lever 19 when the cook 25 is closed, so that in the act of opening the cock which is done by pulling on the chain section 29 the said cock opens to aconsiderable extent before the upper eye 31 abuts the lever 19.. This opening of the cock allows the gas to pass to the burnertip (not shown) so that when the downward pull is continued on the chain section 29 for the purpose of fully opening the. cock, the gas willbe ascending in the. mantle from the burner tip by the time that the free'end portion of the operating lever is depressed by the said'downward'pull. Since the depressing of the free end of the operating lever has the effect of moving the tongue 17 into contact with the extended inner end portion of the lower plate 9, the closing of the circuit through the filament 7 and the consequent heating of the same will be obtained substantially at the same time as they gas rising from the burner reaches the openings 6. i p
The conducting wire 16 hereinbefore referred to, extends from a suitable source of electric energy and is herein shown to constitute the return wire of a circuit the positive wire 33 of which is suitably connected to. the supply pipe 0, or in fact it may be connected to any part of the igniter which is insulated from the upper and lower plates 99. 7 I Y What is claimedas new is:
An ignition device for gas fixtures com prising a support, a filament carried by the support, a: plate. connected to the support and insulated therefrom and including an integral tongue, and a flexible operating element adapted for moving the tongue in contact with the support.
