To all 'whom 'it may concern lle it known that l, WYLIE AsHwoRTr-I, a citizen of the United States, residing at Helena, in the county of Lewis and Clark and State oi' lt/ilontana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Oil-Cans, of which the following is a specilication.
This invention relates to oil cans and particularly to hand oilers for machinery.
The primary object of the invention is to provide an oil can of this character having means embodied therewith by which oil may be discharged from its spout in small quantities at each operation, without danger ol an excessive flow of the lubricant.
A further object is to provide an oil can of the class described which issimple in construction, andy whose operative parts are constructed so as to be durable and not likely to get out of order.
The invention consists in the features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal side elevation ot the device, parts thereof being shown in elevation showing the feed plunger in its inoperative position; Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the feed plunger during operation oLt1 forcing oil from the discharge spout; and, Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 3 3 ot Fig. 1.
ln the drawing, the numeral 1 designates the cylindrical body of the can which is preferably tapered at its upper end as at 2, a discharge spout 3 being connected with the reduced end of the said tapered portion. This spout includes a lowermost cylindrical portion 4: and a gradually tapered upper, end portion 5. The lower end of the can body is preferably threaded internally as at G for engagement with the externally threaded, annular flange 7 provided upon the upper face of a closure cap 8. This cap 8 is provided medially with a circular opening and with an inwardly projecting cylindrical casing 9 communicating with the said opening and disposed concentric with respect to the discharge spout 3. The head 10 of the casing 9 is provided with a medial opening communicating with a longitudinally extending guide tube 11 which is connected with the casing 10 in any suitable manner and projects upwardly through the Specification of Letters Patent.

A plunger 12 of cylindrical construction extends through the tube 11 and is adapted for longitudinal reciprocation therein. The plunger. is circular in cross section and snugly tits within the guide tube so that oil cannot lealr therethrough. A circular push button 13 is secured to the lower end of the plunger 12 and is movable longitudinally within the casing 9, a helical spring 14 being positioned within the said casing in interposed relation to the head 10 thereof and the push button 13 serves to maintain 'the latter normally in its outermost position flush with the bottom of the can. A circular head 15 is detachably secured to the upper end of the plunger 12 concentric therewith, it being provided centrally in its under face with a threaded recess 16 in which the threaded upper end 17 of the plunger is engaged. A cylindrical sleeve 1S is formed upon the said head in depending relation thereto and is adapted to receive the upper end of the guide tube 11 for longitudinal sliding movement with respect thereto. This sleeve 18 is intended to aid the plunger 12 in preventing any oil from leaking into the guide tube. The head 15 of the plunger is adapted normally to be in engagement with the inner end of the guide tube and is thus disposed in spaced relation to the inner end of the cylindrical portion fr of the discharge spo-ut.
In using' the oil can to luhricate a bearing or the like, the can is inverted with the plunger 12 still in its normal position so as to permit oil to enter the discharge spout. Then, after applying the discharge spout properly to the bearing, the plunger 12 is forced inwardly by application of pressure to the push button 13 in order to move the head 15 of the plunger into the cylindrical portion of the discharge spout. This initial operation of the plunger should be performed suddenly upon inversion of the can, so as to check the iiow of oil through the spout. Vhen the plunger head is in this position, the quantity of oil contained within the spout is held suspended therein. By forcing the plunger inwardly in a gradual manner, the oil will be discharged from the spout in a steady stream until the required quantity has been applied to the bearing.
Then, the pressure upon the push button is released slightly and the flow of lubricant will be checked accordingly. ln case the quantity of oil within the discharge spout is sufficient, a number of bearings may be oiled before it becomes necessary to bring the can to its upright position and to release the plunger completely so as to permit the filling of the discharge spout again in the manner already described.
When it becomes necessary to replenish the supply of oil within the can or to clean the interior the same, it is merely necessary to unscrew the cap 8 forming `the bottom of the can, whereupon the operating mechanism as a unit may be withdrawn from the can body in a single operation, thus leaving the interior of the can empty and unobstructed so that it may be cleaned conveniently. Before introducing oil into the can, it should be inverted and the discharge spout should be closed by applying the thumb to the end of the same whereupon the can-may be filled and the cap 18 with the attached operating mechanism may be rein serted into position in manner which should be readily understood.
When using the ordinary oil can in cold weather, it is necessary to remove the spout and clean the saine from time to time, owing to the fact that eil will become hardened therein and will thus clog the spout so as to prevent the discharge of oil therethrough. ln my improved can, however, the forced feed mechanism will serve to eject any har` dened oil that may collect in the spout forci bly therefrom, thus rendering it unnecessary to provide. a detachable spout.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it should be apparent that l have provided a simply constructed and e'liicicnt oil can which will be inexpensive in the cost of manufacture, which may be cleaned and relled readily, and which will be very economical in use owing to the accurate manner in which it dispenses its liquid contents. lt is to be understood, however, that I do not limit myself necessarily to the exact details of construction but may resort to minor changes therein, falling within the scope of the appended claims, as may be found necessary in practice.
Having thus described my invention, what ll claim is:
l. An oil can comprising a hollow body, a discharge spout provided upon said body and including a cylindrical inner portion, a guide tube provided in the body in axial alinement withthe said spout and having its inner end disposed in spaced relation to the inner end of the spout, a plunger slidably mounted within said tube, a `circular head secured to the inner end of the plunger and adapted for movement through the cylin` drical portion of the discharge spout, a
sleeve secured to the said headand projecty ing inwardly therefrom for the slidable reception of the inner end of the guide tube, yieldable means for normally maintaining the said plunger in its outermost position with its head in engagement with the yinner end of the guide tube, and means by which the plunger may be el erated inwardly.
2. An oil can comprising a hollow body, a discharge spout provided upon the said body and including` a cylindrical inner portion, a detachable bottom for the said body, a guide tube extending inwardly from the bottom of the body in axial alinement with the said spout and having its `inner end disposed in spaced relation to the inner end of the spout, a plunger slidably mounted within said tube and having its inner end threaded., a circular head having a medial threaded opening engaged with the threaded end of the plunger, a tubular sleeve formed upon the head and projecting inwardly therefrom to embrace the inner end of the guide tube for slidable and rotary movement thereon, yieldable means for normally maintaining the plunger in its outermost inoperative position, and means by which the plunger may be operated inwardly. v
