OF NEW YGRK, N. Y.
OPERATING MEANS FOR ELECTRIC-LAM? SWITCHES.
I Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. %5, 114h Application filed May 25, 1914. Serial No. 840,780.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ARTHUR J. TIZLEY, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and a resident of@ the city of New York. borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Operating Means for Electric- Lamp Switches, of which the followingds a full, clear, and exact description.
' My invention relates to a means for operatingelectric lamp switches, and it has for its object to provide a rotary lamp switch member with a stud movable in a slot in a casing by a cam mounted on a collar so that the switch member may be rotated a distance by the collar and the cam, and with a further rotary movement of the collar the cam may push the stud into a recess at the slot which permits the cam to pass the stud. The switch member may then be moved back to normal position by-a spring provided for The rotary switch member having the stud may be connected with an electric switch of a well-known type.
Additional objects of the invention will appear in the following s ecification in which the preferred form 0 my invention is disclosed.
In the drawings similar reference characters refer to similar parts in all the views in which view showing the switch within the casing.
'mg secured to the drawings it will be seen that acasing 5 is providedwhich incloses a switch of a type having a conductor 6 which leads to the lamp 7 and a second conductor with which the switch is connected. The switch is constructedwith an insulating member 8 rotatably mounted on the conductor 6, a conducting member 9 beone side of the insulating member 8, this conducting member 9 having portions bent over the periphery of the insulating member 8 at- 10 and 11. It will be seen that the insulating member 8 is ratchet shaped, and that it is engaged by a spring conducting member 12 so that with the rotary movement of the insulating member 8, the conducting member 12 may be brought By referring to into contact with the conducting member 9 at 10 or 11 and that with another movement of the insulating member 8 the conducting member 12 will be brought into contact with a surface of the insulating member 8 to open the switch. This is all of a wellknown construction in which the member 9 is connected with the conducting member 13 to which a binding post 11 is secured. The conducting member 9 is secured to one side of the insulating ratchet member 8. the other side of the insulating ratchet member 8, there is secured a plate 15 with ratchet teeth which are engaged by the ratchet plate 16, the ratchet plate 16 being held yieldingly in engagement with the ratchet plate 15 by' the spring 17 this spring 17 having an extending terminal 18 secured to the arm 19 mounted on the plate 16, this arm 19 serving to carry the stud 20 which is movably disposed in a slot 21 in the casing 5. This slot 21 has a recess 22 adjacent its end 23. It will be understood that by moving the stud 20 the plate 16 will be rotated and with it the plate 15 carrying the insulating member 8, leaving the insulating ratchet member 8 to bring the conducting member 12 into engagementwith the periphery of the insulating member 8 or with the conducting member 9 at 10 or 11. as may be desired, the switch being operated in this manner.
As a means for moving the stud 20 1 provide a collar. 24 which is rotatably mounted on the casino 5 as shown in the drawings, this collar 24 having cams 25 which are adapted to engage the stud 20 and move it in the slot 21 to the recess 22. When the stud 20 reaches the end 23 of the slot 21, it is pushed into the recess 22 by one of the earns, the cam and the collar 24 being permitted in this manner to continue the rotary movement while the stud 20 with the arm 19 and the plate 16, are rotated by means of the spring 17 to obtain a new engagement with the ratchetteeth on the plate 15 to move again the insulating member 8 when the collar 24 is rotated to bring one of the cams 25 into engagement with the stud 20.
Having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a means for operating an electric lamp switch, a rotary member having a stud, a casing having a slot in which the stud is movably disposed, there being a recess in the casing at one side and adjacent an end of the slot, a collar for rotating relatively to the casing and provided with a cam for moving the stud in the slot, and from the slot into the recess, means for returning the rotary member and the stud to a normal position, and switch means operable by the rotary member.
2. In a means for operating an velectric lamp switch, a rotary member having a stud,
a casing having a slot in which the stud is movably disposed, a cam for moving the stud in the slot, means for operating the cam, means for returning the rotary member and the stud to a normal position, and
Tsjwitch means operable by the rotary mem- 3. In a means for operating an electric lamp switch, a rotary member having a stud, a collar rotatably mounted and having a cam for engaging and moving the stud, means for returning the rotary member and the stud to a normal position after the termination of said movement by the cam, and switch means operable by the rotary member.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed myv name to this specification in the presence of the two subscribing witnesses.
ARTHUR JAMES TIZLEY.
