This invention relates to rail joints, its object being to provide a joint which obviates the necessity oi1 nsing nnts and bolts such as are .eoinnionly employed and which not only serresto hold the rails securely together but also prevents pounding bythe wheels passing over the joint.

25 is formed along the top of the plate 22 and has its ends cut off diagonally, as shown at 2G. Teeth 27 depend from the plate 22 at opposite sides of the stud 2l and are spaced apart a distance equal to the distance between the seats 15 of each pair.
An elongated wedge 80 is adapted to be inserted longitudinally between the flanges 9 and 10 and above the plate 22 so as to eX- tend bach ofthe shoulder this wedge being provided, at its small end, with a slot 31 extending longitudinally7 thereof` close to its front edge. VVhenthe wedge is driven longitudinally into position upon and back of the shoulder 25 and between the flanges 9 and 10, the spreading element 21 will wedge into the slot 31 as hereinafter' set forth.
lVlien it is desired to secure two rails together by means of' the joint herein described, the fish plate 3 is placed at one side of the rails after which the web 13 of the other fish plate is placed at the other side of the rails, the openings l and 12 being disposed in alinement with the openings L. The pins are then inserted through the two fish plates and the openings 2, the heads of the pins bearing against the fish plate 3 while the grooved portions T of the pins will rest within the seats 15. A locking member, such as shown in Fig. 7, is then inserted between the flanges 9 and 10 and above the seats 15. By holding the plate 22 close to the bottom of the flange 9, the stud 2-fl can slip back into the groove 17 to position directly over the opening 18 whereupon, when the plate 22 is released, the stud 21 will drop into the opening 1S and the teeth 27 will drop into the groove 7 and back of the shoulders 8. Thus withdrawal of the pins from 9 and 10 and above the plate 22, this wedge being so shaped at its bottom as to extend back of the shoulder 25, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4. By driving the wedge 30 longitudinally the slot 31 will be brought to position where the wedging element 21 will enter the same and this wedging element will thus deflect the tongue 32 of the wedge 30 outwardly against the diagonally disposed inner surface of the web 2O which, in turn, will deflect the tongue inwardly, thus causing the tongueto partly wrap about the spreading element 21, as shown in Fig. 3. Consequently accidental withdrawal of the wedge 30 from the fish plate is prevented. Only by forcibly driving the wedge outwardly from the fish plate so as to cause the tongue 32 to bend out of engagement with the element 21, cany said wedge 3h0 be removed from the fish plate. Thus it will be seen that separation of the parts of the joint is prevented unless effected intentionally.
As shown in Fig. 1, the top surface of the flange 9 is inclined upwardly toward its center .from its ends so that, as the wheels pass over the rails at their meeting ends, they will ride onto this flange 9 and be lifted over the meeting ends of the rails, thus preventing pounding at the oint. y
1While the structure as described is designed for use in connection with four fastening pins, it is to be understood that with obvious modifications, the joint can be used in connection with either siX or eight pins. Where it is used in connection with six pins twv fastening dev`ces 22LL are provided, these being the same as the fastening plate22 hereinbefore described, with the exception y that the stud 24 is arranged with two of the teeth 29 at one side thereof and the other tooth 29 at its other side. l/Vhere the joint is to be used in connection with eight Yfastening pins, the plates 22 are the same as those shown in Fig.` 7 with the exception that two teeth 29 are located at each side of the stud 24:. These modified structures have been illustrated in Figs. 9 and 10. If
desired, the studs 24 and 21 can be provided il with cotter pins 33 for holding them against withdrawal from the openings 18.
