Having thus described inv invention, I claim:
l. A type matrix having' two parallel horizontal alining surfaces, one facing upward and one facing downward, and other horizontal surfaces which are adjacent to said alining surfaces, the said alining surfaces being depressed with respect to the said adjacent horizontal surfaces of said matrix. t
2. A type matrixl having its character depression in one vertical edge and 'having at its upper and lower ends respectively, two parallel horizontal aliningsurfaces which are depressed with respect to the adjacent top and bottom surfaces of said matrix.
A. type matrix having two horizontal parallel alining surfaces and having aldja- 50 cent thereto other surfaces which project Aoutward be ondc the planes of said valining surfaces, w ereby the aliningsurfaces are protected from irictional contact with the surfaces in a linotype machine, as the matrix 45 is moved about in said machine.
el. fa set of type matrices, each of which has two alining surfaces, one faced upward and one faced downward, which two alining surfaces are 4the saine distances apartes allV te iatrix that the distance 'hete/"een the laset line of the character and both :dining surfaces are the same as the correspoiil-.cling distances on every other matrixu 5. A set of type matrices, each of which has two parallel depressed alining surfaces, ec
one faced upward and one faced downward, which two aiming surfaces are the same chstances apart on-all matrices, each ci said 'matrices having also a character depression in one vertical edge, the characters seing 2 larger on some matrices than on others, and being so placed on each matrix that the dis tance between the hase line ci the character and both alining siricces the same as the corres/,oendingn di; matrix.
