This invention relates. to hydro-carbon engines and in particular to agovernor which controls the s'peedthereof and also controls the ignition system.
Inhydro-carbon eng nes it is desirable that thespark be advanced as the engine s 'ieeds up and athigh speed the'ig'nition must occur before the piston starts on the power stroke. It is therefore desirable to connect the ignite!" with the governor ofthe engine so that when the speed rises "the spark will be automatically advanced. In engines ofthe above type. especially when used for driving motor vehicles, as now con- StIllCtCfl. the governor or its connections are exposed; The result is that it may easily be tampered with. This is undesirable where the driver of the vehicle inexperienced and perhaps irresponsible.
The objects of this ii'iveution are therefore to provide a governor which will. by a simultaneous n'ioverncnt. advance the spark and control the speed of the engine by throttling or otherwise, to house the governor and its connections. and to arrange the mechanism so that it may not be tampered with without breaking" a seal and disconnecting. the mechanism or both.
This invention therefore provides means for obtaining the above results. The govcrner shaft has m unted upon it a suitable centrifugal device which rotates therewith. A s eeve is mounted uppn this shaft. and directly connected to arms extending from the centrifugal device. The lower end of the sleeve is connected by means of an arm to the shaft which supports the mixture throttle valve. I The commutator shaft is located in a'linemcnt with the governor shaft and slidablv'connected with thesleeve so as to turn therewith. the engine speeds up. the centrifugal device ygill simultanecusly move the sleeve axially and angularly on the governorshaft. thereby simultaneously throttling the mivture and, advancing the spark by ad vancing the commutator shaft with resncrl to the governor shaft.
(The mixture pipe is preferably located adjacent the governor, and the governor and its connections are housed and protected by a cover whichtmay be. sealed in place by a suitable seal band or wire. Theconnnutator shaft is mounted for rotation in the cover plate and is removable therewith, so that when the cover is removed the commutator is disconnected and the motor rendered inoperative. Thearm which connects the governor to the throttle shaft is preferably so arranged that when the governor is discon nected this arm will close the throttle. It will thus be seen that when the governor is tampered with the entire motor is rendered inoperative,- and it will require a skilled worlnnan to connect the parts pro rly. The entire housing with its parts may ii: removed frcm the motor as a unit.

Referring to the drawings. 20 represents a portion of the crank case. 21 one of the cylinders bolted thereto. as'shown at 22. 23 the cam shaft. which is driven from the crank shaft by the usual, two-tmoiie gears, represents a portion of the carbureter, and 2.3 the intake pipe; the intake pipe being connected by suitable connections to the cylinders. Upon the governor shaft 30 is mounted a bevel-gear 31, which meshes with the bevel gear 32 mounted upon the cam shaft 23. Rigidly secured to the shaft 30 are a pair of radial arms 33, upon which are pivotally mounted the governor links 34 provided with the usual balls 35. A sleevenilt is loosely mounted upon the "shaft 30 and provided with a pair of annular flanges 37, which receive a shoe 38 pivotally connected to an arm 39, secured to the operating shaft 40 for the throttle valve 28. The sleeve, as shown in detail in Fig. 8, is provided. with a pair of bearing lugs or trunnions 41, upon which are slidingly and pivotally mounted the blocks 42, connecting the trunnions with the arms 43 secured to the governor links 34. By means of the above arrangement the governor links will simultaneously move the sleeve 36 axially'andangularly on the shaft 30. i

The segment-s48 are connected by means of a metal st'rip.,52 which forms one of the terminals of the circuit, the other terminal being grounded on the motor frame. The lower end of the commutator shaft'is provided with feet 53 which slide between standards 54 upon the sleeve 36, the arrangement being such that sleeve 36 may move axially with respect to shaft 45 and still be connected with it so as to rotate it.
Upon the shaft 30 is mounted a governor spring 55, bearing-against the lower flange 37 on the sleeve 36 and against a roller thrust bearing 56. From the above arrange- *ment it will be seen that the connections beto'the shaft 30, and thus advances the spark. It will be noted that the intake ipe '25 is located adjacent the governor. he governor is housed by a suitable housing 57, which preferably is integral with the intake pipe. This housing is provided with a tubuvided with an opening 59 through which the bevel-gear 31 may be inserted into engagement with the bevel-gear 32. The tubular portion 58 is provided with a flange 60, whereby the housing may be secured to the crank case 20 by bolts, as shown in Fig. 1 A suitable bearing sleeve 61 is provided for the governor shaft 30.
The housing 57 is closed b a cover 62 provided with an extension 62 A tube 63 connects this extension with an extension 63' on the comm'utatorcasing 64. This tube 63 forms a casing for thecommutator shaft and. is provided with hearing sleeves 65. The cover 62 is secured to the housing 57 by means of bolts 66, provided with eyes or rings 67 for receiving a seal band or wire (58, the ends of which may be sealed together by .aseal or lock 69. The bevel-gear 31 projects from the housing 57, and the opening 59 is of larger diameter than this bevelgear so that it may be inserted into position in mesh with bevel-gear 32. The housing 57 which supports and incloses all of the working parts may be removed as a unit.
From the above it will be seen that the governor absolutely controls the throttle 28 and simultaneously controls the position of the spark, the entire mechanism being housedlso that it cannot be tampered with. without detection. In order to tamper with the governor it is necessary that the seal be broken and the cover plate 62 removed. Since this cover plate supports the commutator shaft, the commutator will be disconnected and therefore the engine rendered inoperative. If the governor is disconnected from its throttle valve the arm 39, weighted by the shoe 38, will automatically operate to additional means for rendering the motor ihoperative. Even if this throttle valve arm 3:3 be tied down there is alwaysthe possibility of making an inaccurate connection between the sleeve 36 and the commutator shaft 45. It will thus be seen that even if this governor is tampered with it requires a skilled Workman to again adjust the parts so that the motor will be operative.

In a hydrocarbon mot-or, the combination with the intake pipe and the throttle .valve therein, of a overnor driven by the motor, a housing fbr said. governor conftiguous to said intake ipe, and means for operatively connecting t e governor with the throttle valve, said means being entirely in closed in said housing and intake pipe.
11. In a hydrocarbon motor; the combination with the intake pipe and the throttle valve therein, of a governor driven by the motor, a housing for said governor 'con tiguous to said intake pipe, means for operatlvely connecting the governor with the throttle valve, said means-being entirely inclosed in said housing and'intake pipe, and means whereby the throttle valve will be automatically closed upon disconnecting the. governor therefrom.
12. In a hydrocarbon motor, the combination with the throttle and spark control mechanisms, of a governor driven by the motor, a housing for said governor, a removable cover for said housing, means for connecting said governor with said throttle and spark control mechanisms, and meansv whereby the removal of said cover renders the motor inoperative.
13. In a hydrocarbon motor, the combination with the governor driven by the motor and a housing for said governor, of a commutator, the operating shaft of said commutator being detachably connected with the operating shaft of said governor, a cover for said governor housing, and means whereby the commutator is disconnected from the governor shaft when said cover is removed.
14. In a hydrocarbon motor, in combination, a governor driven by the motor,an intake pipe having a throttle therein, connections between the governor and the throttie, and a housing for the governor and conncctions integral with the intake pipe.
15. In a hydrocarbon motor, in combination, a governor driven by the motor, an intake pipe having a throttletherein, connections between the governor and the throttle, a housingv for the governor and connections integral with the intake pipe, a removable cover for the housing, and sealing means therefor.
16. In a hydrocarbon motor, in combi-.
nation, a governor driven by the motor, an intake pipe having a throttle therein, an operating shaft for the throttle, an arm'on the shaft connected with the governor and constructed when disconnected from the govcrnor to close the throttle, and a housing for the governor and its connections.
17. In a hydrocarbon motor, in combination, a governor shaft driven by the 1notor, a governor mounted thereon, a housing for the governor, a cover for the housing, and a commutator shaft mounted in the cover and 'detachably connected to the governor shaft so as to "be removed with the cover.
18. In a hydrocarbon motor, the combination with a governor, its shaft, and connections, of a housing inclosing and supporting all of said parts and an intake pipe secured to said housing, said housing and intake pipe being constructed to be detachably secured to the frame so as to be r moved as a unit.
19. In a hydrocarbon motor, the combination with a governor, its shaft, and connections, of a housing inclosing and sup porting all of said parts, an intake pipe integral with the housing, said housing and intake p ipe being constructed to be detach ably secured to the frame so as to be removed therefrom as a unit.
20. In a hydrocarbon motor, the combi nation with a governor, its shaft, and con nections, of a housing inclosing and sup- -mcnts thereon, and governor mechanism adapted to move said member longitudinally and angularly.
22. In a governor, the combination with driving and driven shafts, of a sleeve hav ing avsplined connection with one-shaft and a connection with the other shaft permit ting both axial and angular movement thereon, and governor mechanism adapted to move said sleeve axially and angularly.
