PORTABLE CIRCULAR QAVJ l -333 'WOBKING llIETi'lLS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 30, 191i.
Patented Aug. 18, 1914.
Serial No. 18,218.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, rinitaxn AciIiLLn Dignrrirxxorfn, a citizen of the French Republic, and residing at 139 Avenue diilleinagne, Paris, France, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in and Relating to Portable Circular Saws for lVorl-zing Metals, of which the following is a complete specification.
The present invention relates to a portable circular saw for working metals, in which the saw is maintained lIil-"COITQCC sawing position by displacement ofits axis ac cording to a circular motion around the driving shaft, with a view to form a compact machine of comparatively small weight, thus facilitating its transportation.
In the drawing which shows as an example of ca rying out the invention a form of construction of the saw more particularly adapted to sawing rails is shown:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of the improvement: Fig. 2 is a section on line 22 of Fig. l: and Fig. 3 is a section on line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
The circular saw a is secured by means of suitable nuts on'the axis Z), on which is mounted a toothed wheel 0 meshing with a pinion (Z fitted on a shaft 6, which holds at its end opposite to the saw a, a driving wheel 7', which may be a sprocket wheel, a toothed wheel or else a worm wheel, so that the driving of the wheel may be hand, electrically or mechanically operated.
The shaft 6 is fitted on the axis of a box held so as to turn without being longitudinally displaced in a casing 7a,.and the axis 7) of the saw is supported in bearings disposed in the said box 9 so as to compel said axis to follow the rotary motion of the box.
On one of the faces of box 9 is keyed a worm wheel 71 meshing with a worm 7', the axis Z: of which is provided with a driving wheel m allowing of its hand operation. To insure the automatic driving of said axis 7a, a ratchet wheel a is secured to the axis 70, and engaging the ratchet wheel is a pawl 0 pivoted to one end of the bell crank lever 42, whose other end 9 extends into the path of the finger 2" on the wheel f so that the ratchet wheel n will be moved one tooth when the lever is engaged by the finger. The bell crank lever 79 is spring pressed and its swinging movement is limited by a stop p.
To reduce the vibrations of the machine, l void jarring, there is arranged around box 5/ a brake strap .9, extremities of h are provided with tighteners t, u, re externally supported on casing it, may be easily operated. Casing connected with a support for the receiving the iron pieces to be I ews in suitable number being .O iQCl in. a projection .2" of thecasing, to conveniently holding the machine on iron to be sawed.
lie device is operated as follows: The re- 'on imparted to wheel 7' by hand or by ctricl or other means, is transmitted by a .iuitable transmission predetermined by the l'lbblo of the toothed wheels (Z, c, to the circular saw a. If wheel at be operated, the worm j and worm wheel 2' will cause the rotation of the box 9, which produces displacement of the axis 7) of the saw on the dotted curved line to of Fig. 2, so that axis 6 may occupy the extreme position b and 6 according tothe progress of the sawing. The sl t 6 being pivoted in the axis of box g may freely turn while allowing of the free revolution of the said box, while the disposition of axis 7; in the bearings arranged in box 5/ insures free rotation of said axis a. Lxedly purpoi during displacement of the box, by the travel of the pinions 0, (Z, one upon another, this not being pl'8]t1CllC1tl to their meshing.
liloreover the brake it absorbs the vibrations which might be produced, and by holding the box prevents any jarring, thus increasing the eiliciency of the saw.
The dimensions of the different members as well as the diameter of the saw a itself, may vary according to the various effects they are to produce. The whole machine may be fitted on a stand or a slide-block to insure its stability, for instance for the sawing of bars of short length while for the .5: ring of rails said slide-block would be useless, the whole machine being supported on the rail to be sawed by means of the screws 3 The driving of the saw may be effected directly or by means of any suitable transmission with an electric motor directly mounted on. the casing, and the lubricating may be effected by means of any known device.
The invention refers to the cutting of iron, or steel of any dimension and of any shape or section. The saw could also be replaced by a mill, and the ratios of transl'iliSSiOll may vary, so as to allow the use of the machine for the milling of all articles.
I claim:
1. A circular saw for sawing metal, comprising; a casing, a rotary hollow member mounted in the casing, a driving shaft centrally mounted in the hollow member and having one end projecting beyond the said member and nrovided with a driving wheel on said end, said shaft being provided with a WON]? wheel within the said member, a saw shaft eccentrically mounted in the hollow member and having the end carrying the saw projecting beyond the end of the hollow member opposite that from whie i the drivin shaft projects, said shaft being provided with a gear wheel within said member and meshing with the gear wheel of the driving shaft, and means for operating the said hollow member.
A circular saw for sawing metal, com-- prising a support, a rotary member mounted in the support, a driving shaft centrally Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each,
mounted in the rotary member, a saw axis eccentrically mounted in the said member and geared with the driving shaft, a worm wheel carried by the rotary member, a worm meshing with the worm wheel and carrying a ratchet, a bell crank lever carrying a pawl engaging the ratchet wheel, and means connected with the driving shaft, for operating the bell crank lever.
J\ circular saw for sawing metal, comprising a support a rotary member mounted in the support, a driving shaft centrally mounted in the rotary member, a saw axis eccentrieally mounted in the said member and geared with the driving shaft, means for operating the rotary member, and a strap brake passing around the rotary memher.
in testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand at Paris (France).
